Development of Smart Healthcare Wear System for Acquiring Vital Signs and Monitoring Personal Health (생체신호 습득과 건강 모니터링을 위한 스마트 헬스케어 의복 개발)

  • Recently, the wearable computing technology with bio-sensors has been rapidly developed and utilized in various areas such as personal health, care-giving for senior citizens who live alone, and sports activities. In particular, the wearable computing equipment to measure vital signs by means of digital yarns and bio sensors is noticeable. The wearable computing devices help users monitor and manage their health in their daily lives through the customized healthcare service. In this paper, we suggest a system for monitoring and analyzing vital signs utilizing smart healthcare clothing with bio-sensors. Vital signs that can be continuously acquired from the clothing is well-known as unstructured data. The amount of data is huge, and they are perceived as the big data. Vital sings are stored by Hadoop Distributed File System(HDFS), and one can build data warehouse for analyzing them in HDFS. We provide health monitoring system based on vital sings that are acquired by biosensors in smart healthcare clothing. We implemented a big data platform which provides health monitoring service to visualize and monitor clinical information and physical activities performed by the users.

Seafarers Walking on an Unstable Platform: Comparisons of Time and Frequency Domain Analyses for Gait Event Detection

  • Wearable sensor-based gait analysis has been widely conducted to analyze various aspects of human ambulation abilities under the free-living condition. However, there have been few research efforts on using wearable sensors to analyze human walking on an unstable surface such as on a ship during a sea voyage. Since the motion of a ship on the unstable sea surface imposes significant differences in walking strategies, investigation is suggested to find better performing wearable sensor-based gait analysis algorithms on this unstable environment. This study aimed to compare two representative gait event algorithms including time domain and frequency domain analyses for detecting heel strike on an unstable platform. As results, although two methods did not miss any heel strike, the frequency domain analysis method perform better when comparing heel strike timing. The finding suggests that the frequency analysis is recommended to efficiently detect gait event in the unstable walking environment.

  • As the number of households with companion animals increases, the demand to monitor the health of companion animals in remote locations far away is increasing. We are going to put a wearable device on a companion animal so that it can monitor the heart beat signal from a remote location. However, the monitoring method using Bluetooth has some disadvantages. it can be accessed only in a short distances. In case of WiFi, large power consumption is the problem. To overcome these issues, we propose a system to reduce power consumption by indirectly receiving a user's request using Bluetooth at a time when the user does not need it, and sending sensor data through WiFi when the user makes a monitoring request.

  • Input devices of wearable computer are difficult to use, so a lot of alternative pointing devices have been considered in recent years. In order to resolve this problem, this paper proposed a dynamic gain control method which is able to improve the performance of wearable pointing device and showed an experimental result comparing this method with conventional method. Also the effects of methods were compared in terms of device (wearable and desktop). The result of calculating throughputs(index of performance) by Fitts' law showed that the pointing performance in dynamic gain condition was improved 1.4 times more than normal gain.

  • In this paper, we propose and developed a keyglove using the touch-typing method as new solutions to the problem of text input into the mobile computing devices. This device recognizes that character is typed in though the hand's movements analysis and requires no additional space on a person's desktop or work surface, and can be easily used with computers of any size, even the smallest mobile computer, and is designed as an input device for wearable computers and virtual environment.   • A recent major development in computer technology is the advent of the wearable computer system that is based on human-centric interface technology trends and ubiquitous computing environments. Wearable computer systems can use the wireless universal serial bus (WUSB) that refers to USB technology that is merged with WiMedia PHY/MAC technical specifications. In this paper, we focus on an integrated system of the wireless USB over the IEEE 802.15.6 wireless body area networks (WBAN) for wireless wearable computer systems supporting U-health services. And a communication structure that can differentiate QoS of U-health WBAN and WUSB traffic with different priorities is proposed for WUSB over IEEE 802.15.6 hierarchical protocol. In our proposal and performance evaluation, throughputs of U-health WBAN and WUSB traffic are analyzed under single and multiple QoS classes to evaluate the effectiveness of proposed QoS differentiating structure in WUSB over IEEE 802.15.6.

  • In this Paper, we propose a body-area localization technique based on WUSB (Wireless USB) over WBAN (Wireless Body Area Networks) protocol required for wearable computer systems. The proposed localization algorithm is executed on the basis of WUSB over WBAN protocol at each sensor node comprising peripherals of a wearable computer system. To increase the accuracy of input information through various body motions in wearable computer systems, a new localization technique with high precision must be developed. To achieve the goal, This paper proposes a combined TDoA/FDoA/AoA (Time Of Arrival/Time Difference Of Arrival/Angle Of Arrival) localization technique with more than four WUSB over WBAN devices to estimate body-area location accurately. The combined TDoA/FDoA/AoA technique reduces 10mm in location estimation errors comparing with a combined TDoA/FDoA technique. This performance enhancement in location error reduction can be ignored at other systems but is meaningful results in body-area localization-based communications.

  • The most basic thing to measure the condition of a companion animal is to check the breathing and pulse. There are several methods to measure the breathing and pulse of a companion animal, and the PPG method is generally used to measure the oxygen saturation (SpO2) in a companion animal. However, since the input PPG signal is inputted with various information as well as oxygen saturation, it is necessary to separate and extract oxygen saturation information from the PPG signal in order to measure the oxygen saturation. Therefore, in this paper, a wearable measuring device for companion animals that can be measured by applying the PPG method was designed and implemented, and an algorithm for separating oxygen saturation information from the PPG signal input through the wearable measuring device was proposed.

  • Wearable computer는 1980년대 중반부터 개발되기 시작하면서 1990년대에 들어서 본격적으로 개발이 진행되었다. 초기에는 컴퓨터의 각 부품을 분해하여 편리하게 배치하거나 신체의 됫부분으로 옮겨 조립함으로써 앞에서 보기에 보이지 않게 하는 정도의 매우 투박한 수준이었지만, 전자제품 생산기술의 발전이 가속화되면서 부품이 소형화되고 성능이 향상되면서 wearable computer의 기능이 크게 업그레이드되었다. 이러한 노력 덕분에 2001년도부터는 일상생활에서 착용이 가능한 수준의 디지털 의류의 형태로까지 개발되면서 언제 어디서나 네트워크에 접속하여 정보를 공유할 수 있는 유비쿼터스 시대를 향하여 나아가고 있다.(중략)
