The ball-on-disk type sliding tests with boundary lubricated steels were carried out to verify the effect of initial spacing in surface profiles on wear and scuffing. Three kinds of surface spacing, which are closely related with initial surface micro-cracks on sliding surfaces, were produced on AISI 1045 steel surfaces using different grinding and polishing processes. Frictional forces and time to scuffing were measured, and the shape and amount of wear particles were analyzed to compare the with original surface profiles. From the tests, it was confirmed that the size of wear particles are related closely to the original spacing of the surface profile. The time to failure and amount of wear were sensitive to the surface spacing. The wider surface spacing shows much longer sliding life and smaller amount of wear than the others. Time to scuffing was increased with increasing surface pro(lie spacing. The size of wear particles increased while the wear and wear rate K were decreased with an increase in surface spacing. After the sliding tests, surface cracks of inner parts of the wear track formed due to scuffing were observed and compared among the specimens having the different surface spacing.
This study presents the wheel wear measurement results of Saemaeul train running on the conventional line. The train set included three different cars which have different shape of wheel profile including KNR and KTX profile currently used in Saemaeul. Train set was operated on Seoul-Pusan line with fixed train set formation for commercial service. Wheel wear measurements were peformed periodically. Here, we describe some results.
A technique for a wear volume calculation is improved and verified in this research. The wear profile data measured by a surface roughness tester is used. The present technique uses a data flattening, the FFT and the windowing procedure, which is used for a general signal processing. The measured value of an average roughness of an unworn surfnce is used for the baseline of the integration for the volume calculation. The improvements from the previous technique are the procedures of the data flattening and the determination of a baseline. It is found that the flattening procedure efnciently manipulates the raw data when the levels of it are not horizontal, which enables us to calculate the volume reasonably well and readily. By comparing it with the weight loss method by using artificial dents, the present method reveals more volume by aroung 3~10%. It is attributed to the protruded region of the specimen and the inaccuracy and data averaging during the weght loss measurement. From a thorough investigation, it is concluded that the present technique can provide an accurate wear volume.
Wear characteristics of Plastic and Nylon pinions against steel gear were studied to gain a better understanding of their tribological behaviors. Wear tests were conducted with power circulating gear test rig under dry contact conditions. Specific wear rates were measured as a function of applied load and the number of revolution. The worn teeth surfaces were examined with a profile projector and a camera. Nylon pinion showed lower specific wear rates than acetal pinion, but suffered teeth breakage under high load per unit tooth width. The dominant wear mechanisms found were adhesion and abrasion.
We proposed new arc-type wheel profiles to improve severe flange wear of conventional wheel profile coned 1:40. We designed many candidate wheel profiles and analyzed the geometric characteristics, dynamic performance and stress at contact points to draw out the final profiles. From the analysis result, we chose two cases of profiles and applied to wheels of test train. Tests carried out in service line to analyze the dynamic performance and verify the wear reduction for two cases of profiles. Test results shows the equal level of dynamic performance and the improvement of wheel flange wear compared with the conventional wheel profile.
The rolling-stocks used in conventional line have suffered wheel problems due to lack of adaptability with track. These brought out severe wheel flange wear, these have caused unstable ride characteristics of rolling-stock. Especially, Wheel flange wear is severely influenced by wheel profile but lateral suspension characteristics. This study was started to induce wheel profile suitable for domestic railway environment. Thus, we analyzed the wear characteristics of wheel profiles that are being applied to railway rolling-stock in KNR. To analyze wheel wear characteristics, we have conducted experiment studies for passenger rolling-stock and obtained useful datum.
The variation of contact traction induced by different contact shapes is studied experimentally and theoretically. Considerations fer the contact shape are rounded, truncated and truncated with rounding punches. A fretting wear experiment is conducted with the contact configuration of the strip on the tube specimens. The strip specimen is pressed to form the end profile of a rounded and truncated with rounding punches shape. Wear on the tube is investigated, which is regarded as the slip region of the contact surface. Taken into consideration is the general solution of the normal traction in the case of the indentation by a punch with its end profile of the combination of parabolas. Then, partial slip solution is obtained numerically, which is compared with the wear on the tube. The radius of the rounding and the obliquity of the edge truncation affect the tractions considerably. It is found that the proper choice of the end profile can restrain the contact-induced failure such aswear.
The simulation program is developed to get the target strip crown of high strength steel in the continuous hot strip rolling. The developed program consists of several sub-program, which contains work roll shifting pattern, roll wear profile, roll thermal expanded profile and strip profile. Also, the variation of strip profile is investigated according to roll deflection and flattening. The results are compared with the values observed from the actual hot rolling of high strength steel. And effect of bender force on the strip profile is studied. The strip crown is shown to decrease with increasing bender force.
In this paper, the procedure to estimate fatigue crack initiation life has been established by considering fretting wear and multiaxial stress states on the contact surface of press-fitted shafts. And a method to calculate the local friction coefficient during the running-in period of fretting wear process has been proposed. The predicted result of worn surface profile in the press-fitted shaft with non-linear local friction coefficient can avoid excessive wear depth estimation compared with that for the case of constant local friction coefficient. Furthermore, the predicted fatigue crack initiation lives based on Smith-Watson-Topper model considering the fretting wear are in good agreement with the experimental data. Consequently, the present method is valid not only for predicting worn surface profile, but also for assessing fatigue crack initiation lives considering the fretting wear during the running-in period in press fits.
