  • Friction and wear affect all processes involved in the extraction of materials and their conversion into finished products in the die applications such as drawing, extrusion etc. Originating phenomenon from the contact surface between the tool and workpiece, they are usually a hindrance to materials process operations which usually result in damaging the tools, increasing energy consumption, the contamination of processed material by wear particles and also some problems associated with technologies to control friction and wear. The most well established method to control friction and wear is by the application of lubricant such as fluorocarbon. Besides, a surface technique so-called surface modification can be applied to solve the tribology problems of the die applications for both the economical and ecological reasons. In this article, we applied DLC(diamond-like carbon) thin film on alumina ceramic for HT test using the PIID(plasma ion immersion deposition), 4 groups of test specimens were tested up to $200^{\circ}C$ which is a little higher than the normal working temperature of die application. Pin-on-disc tribo-tester was used to test the friction and surfaces were characterized by SEM and EDS and else, the morphology changes of DLC coatings were studied. The present work indicated that the DLC had a great potential to reduce the friction and wear in the alumina die application without lubricants.

  • PTFE has good mechanical and chemical stability at a wide range of temperatures and demonstrates a low friction coefficient value. PTFE is being used for self-lubricating parts in industry. But it shows a high wear rate. Thus, PTFE and nano-diamond powder were mixed into a composite and the wear properties of a PTFE coating layer on Al6061 was investigated. A ball-on-disk type of wear tester was used under a dry condition and different temperatures of oil. After the wear test, the wear track wasexamined by optical microscope. The PTFE-diamond showed the lowest friction coefficient (0.02) of all the lubricants in the experiments. The friction coefficient was shown to be directly related to the diamond powder in the PTFE coating. Adhesion estimations were performed by a scratch test, which is mainly used for coatings. The critical load between the coating and substrate was defined through analyses of the friction load, normal load curve, and acoustic emissions, along with optical microscope observations. The scratch test results showed that an import item (SWISS) gave the highest critical load values.

  • The frictional and wear characteristics of non-asbestos friction materials made of four different fibers (carbon, aramid, ceramic and glass) have been investigated at elevated temperature using High Frequency Friction Tester. On the basis of the experimental results, friction and wear phenomena of four different non-asbestos fibers were caused by lattice layer film of carbon, polymeric transfer film of aramid, abrasion of ceramic and adhesion of glass fiber under each contact junction. The surface analysis of the worn specimens and counter parts after tests were observed using Scanning Electron Microscope and Optical Microscope.

  • Cu-matrix-sintered brake pads and heat-resistant low-alloy steel are commonly applied to basic brake systems in high-energy moving machines. We analyzed how the tribological characteristics are influenced by the inertial mass. A high inertial mass decreased the friction coefficient by about 15% compared to a low inertial mass under all velocity conditions. The wear rates of the friction materials increased with the inertial mass. Thus, the inertial mass influences the friction coefficient and wear rate of the friction materials and disk but not the friction stability.

  • Friction and wear characteristics of gear oils added load carrying aditives, JS and DBP have been invesitigated using Shell Four Ball Tester and Cygnus and also compared with commercial gear oil. The Gear oil added DBP among them showed excellent friction and wear performances, which is deduced by action mechanism of additives. The surface analysis of the worn balls was conducted using an optical microscope.

  • This study deals with the characteristics of degraded stainless steel. Stainless steel is heat treated to ensure mechanical properties when designing or manufacturing machinery parts or equipment. In this study, the mechanical properties and wear characteristics of three kinds of stainless steels after artificially heat-treated at 753 K~993 K, where chrome depletion occurs near the grain boundary, were evaluated. The microstructure and fracture surface were also observed. From the results, friction coefficient and wear loss decreased with increasing the heat treatment temperature regardless of the type of stainless steel. Also, as the tensile strength increased, the friction coefficient and wear loss decreased. Wear loss showed proportional to a tendency to increase with increasing friction coefficient.

  • For the wear characteristics assessment of Saemaul train passing through curves, an analysis model for multi-car system has been developed. By using this model and ADAMS/Rail, sensitivity analyses have been conducted for the wear characteristics by changing the related parameters. According to the increase of running speed, the wear number, the sliding mean and friction coefficient were increased. At high speed, the wear number, the sliding mean and friction coefficient of left wheel showed higher than right wheel. If the cant increased, the wear number the sliding mean and friction coefficient increased. but decreased based on the balance cant value by the curvature and running speed.

  • Ni-P-SiC composite coating layers were prepared by electroless plating method and their deposition rate, codeposition of SiC, morphology, surface roughness, hardness, wear and friction properties were investigated. The deposition rate was kept almost constant independent of the concentration of SiC in the plating solution and the codeposition of SiC in the composite coating layer increased with increased concentration of SiC in the plating solution except the early stage. Vickers microhardness increased with respect to the increased codeposition of SiC and the heat treatment at $300^{\circ}C$ in air for 1 hour. It was found that the wear volume decreased with increased up to 50 wt.% of SiC codeposition, and that friction coefficient increased gradually with increased codeposition of SiC. Considering the wear and the friction behaviors, the composite coating layer obtained by using 50 wt.% of SiC codeposition is desirable for the practical application for anti-wear and anti-friction coatings.

  • The mechanical characteristics of the high speed steel by Powder metallurgy Process (PM-HSS) has been reported to improve with several alloying constituents, such as high carbon, vanadium and cobalt. In this paper, sliding wear test has been conducted using a pin-on-disc machine for three PM-HSS which contains 0%, 5% and 12% cobalt respectively, in order to evaluate the effect of cobalt on wear properties of PM-HSS. The results of this study showed that the wear resistance of PM-HSS has been increased by the addition of cobalt on the range of experimental friction velocities. When compared with the effect of addition of cobalt, the wear resistance of PM-HSS with 5% cobalt has been found to be superior to that of PM-HSS with 12% cobalt.

  • In this study, reciprocating wear tests are performed on AISI 52100 bearing steel to investigate its tribological behavior in a hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) water solution. The h-BN-based aqueous lubricant is prepared using an atoxic procedure called ultrasonic sonication in pure water. Ball-on-flat reciprocating sliding experiments are conducted, where the ball is slewed on a fixed flat at 50-㎛ displacement. The lubricating behavior of h-BN is compared with that of deionized (DI) water. Results show that the friction coefficient is higher in h-BN testing than that in DI tests, but the results are equalized as the friction coefficient reaches a stable level. Scanning electron microscopic images reveal significant material loss in the center and mild abrasion on the edge of the wear scar in h-BN tests. However, these effects are minor in DI water situations. The results of energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy show that considerable oxidation occurs in the central zone of the wear scar in h-BN cases with strong adhesion and material removal. These findings reveal the importance of determining ideal circumstances that can tolerate material friction and wear.
