  • In this paper a general approach for studying the motion of a cantilever beam interacting with a 2D fluid flow is presented. The fluid is solved by a general purpose commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package (FLUENT 6.2), while the structure is managed by means of a dedicated finite element method solver, coded in FLUENT as a user-defined function (UDF). A weak fluid structure interaction coupling scheme is adopted exchanging information at the end of each time step. An arbitrary cantilever beam can be introduced in the CFD mesh with its wetted boundaries specified; the cantilever can also interact with specified rigid and flexible walls through use of a non-linear contact algorithm. After a brief review of relevant scientific contributions, some test cases and application examples are presented.

  • [Fe II Fe III $BPLNP(OAc)_2](BPh_4)_2$ (1), a new model for the reduced form of the purple acid phosphatases, has been synthesized by using a dinucleating ligand, 2,6-bis[((2-pyridylmethyl)(6-methyl-2-pyridylmethyl)ami-no)methyl]-4-nitrophenol (HBPLNP) . Complex 1 has been studied by electronic spectral, NMR, EPR, SQUID, and electrochemical methods. Complex 1 exhibits two strong bands at 498 nm $(\varepsilon=$ 2.6 ${\times}10^3M-^1cm-^1)$ and 1363 nm $(\varepsilon=$ 5.7 ${\times}10^2M-^1cm-^1)$ in $CH_3CN.$ These are assigned to phenolate-to-FeIII and intervalence charge-transfer transitions, respectively. NMR spectrum of complex 1 exhibits sharp isotropically shifted resonances, which number is half of those expected for a valence-trapped species, indicating that electron transfer between FeⅡ and FeⅢ centers is faster than NMR time scale at room temperature. Complex 1 undergoes quasireversible one-electron redox processes. The $FeIII_2/FeIIFeIII$ and $FeIIFeIII/FeII_2$ redox couples are at 0.807 and 0.167 V ver-sus SCE, respectively. It has Kcomp = 5.9 ${\times}$10 1s(acetato) ligand combination sta-bilizes a mixed-valence FeIIFeIII complex in the air. Interestingly, complex 1 exhibits intense EPR signals at g = 8.56, 5.45, 4.30 corresponding to mononuclear high-spin FeⅢ species, which suggest a very weak magnetic coupling between the iron centers. Magnetic susceptibility study shows that there is a very weak antiferromag-netic coupling (J = $-0.78cm-^1$, H = $-2JS_1${\times}$S_2)$ between FeII and FeIII centers. Thus, we can suggest that complex 1 has a very weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the iron centers due to the electronic effect of the nitro group in the bridging phenolate ligand.

  • The magnetization and/or resistivity of high $T_c$ superconductors ($YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$(YBCO) single crystal, $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8$ (Bi-2212) single crystal, $Tl_2Ba_2CaCu_2O_8$ (Tl-2212) film, $HgBa_2Ca_2Cu_3O_8$ (Hg-1223) film) have been measured as a function of magnetic field H and temperature T. The extracted fluctuation part of the magnetization and conductivity exhibits a critical behavior consistent with the three-dimensional XY model. The dynamic critical exponent z does not sensitively vary with a type of the superconductors. The value of z ranges from 1.5 to $1.8{\pm}0.1$. However, the static critical exponent ${\nu}$ is the most largely increased in Tl-2212 that has a weaker interlayer coupling strength than YBCO; the value of ${\nu}$ is 0.669, 0.909, 1.19, and 1.338 for YBCO, Bi-2212, Hg-1223, and Tl-2212 respectively. The results indicate that the weak interlayer coupling along the c-axis of high $T_c$ superconductors near $T_c$ does not influence the dynamic critical exponent z (the same value of superfluid $^4He$), but significantly increases the static critical exponent ${\nu}$.

  • Extended H$\ddot{u}$ckel molecular calculations have been used to analyze how the magnitude of exchange coupling is influenced by the structural distortions in a series of dinuclear six-coordinate copper(II) complexes bridged by the planar bis-bidentate oxalate anion. Copper(II) ions have distorted octahedral surroundings, one being axially elongated and the other compressed. The magnetic interaction is strong in the former complexes and very weak in the latter. This is interpreted as resulting from a switching of magnetic spin orbitals due to the structural distortions (bond elongation or compression) of the copper sites.

  • A phase-locked Channel-Substrate-Planar(CSP) laser arrays is described. Arrays of emitters with weak coupling are operated in a set of discrete modes determined by the number and spacing of the emitters. The interactions between emitters lead to a splitting of the wave-length and gain which are calculated from the coupling strength. Phase-locked arrays has exhibited to CW output-power as high as 80 m W and the highest order mode will have preferred oscillation. A strong hole burning is occurred at p=30m W. The most stable lasing mode is occurred at element spacing S=3.5\ulcornerm and there is no coupling at S>7 \ulcornerm.

  • The effects caused by the ionization on the electronic structure and geometry on C60 are studied by the modified Su-Schriffer-Heeger (SSH) model Hamiltonian. After the ionization of C60, the bond structure of the singly charged C60 cation is deformed from Ih symmetry of the neutral C60 to D5d, C1, and C2, which is dependent upon the change of the electron-phonon coupling strength. The electronic structure of the C60+ cation ground state undergoes Jahn-Teller distortion in the weak electron-phonon coupling region, while self-localized states occur in the intermediate electron-phonon region, but delocalized electronic states appear again in the strong electron-phonon region. In the realistic strength of the electron-phonon coupling in C60, the bond structure of C60+ shows the layer structure of the bond distortion and a polaron-like state is formed.

  • This paper presents a new algorithm for the closed-loop $H_{\infty}$ composite control of weakly coupled bilinear systems with time-varying parameter uncertainties and exogenous disturbance using the successive Galerkin approximation(SGA). By using weak coupling theory, the robust $H_{\infty}$ control can be obtained from two reduced-order robust $H_{\infty}$ control problems in parallel. The $H_{\infty}$ control theory guarantees robust closed-loop performance but the resulting problem is difficult to solve for uncertain bilinear systems. In order to overcome the difficulties inherent in the $H_{\infty}$ control problem, two $H_{\infty}$ control laws are constructed in terms of the approximated solution to two independent Hamilton-Jacobi-Isaac equations using the SGA method. One of the purposes of this paper is to design a closed-loop parallel robust $H_{\infty}$ control law for the weakly coupled bilinear systems with parameter uncertainties using the SGA method. The other is to reduce the computational complexity when the SGA method is applied to the high order systems.
