  • A novel branched wax has been developed for the control of the hardness of oil-wax gels. Using this wax, glossier application and smoother texture but tough lipstick can be obtained. Oil-wax gels are oily solids composed of liquid and crystalline solid oils (waxes). They are widely used in various cosmetic products, especially lipsticks. The control of gel hardness is one of the most important techniques in improvement of the lipstick quality. Addition of small amounts of commercial branched paraffin wax (e.g. microcrystalline wax, b-PW) to n-paraffin wax (n-PW) has been commonly used to increase gel hardness. However, gel hardness is very sensitive to the quantity of b-PW and the gel obtained is not always hard enough for practical use. In this study we examined the relationship between the gel hardness and the properties of the wax crystal in the gel. We have found that, when b-PW is added to n-PW, the wax crystal size becomes smaller (hardening the gels) and its crystallinity is decreased (softening the gels) simultaneously. Considering this result, we have developed a novel branched wax, Bis(polyethylenyl)- tetramethyldisiloxane (named ESE). ESE molecules are composed of a central tetramethyldisiloxane unit (branch unit) with polyethylene units at both ends. The central unit may suppress crystal growth while the ends are expected to prevent a decrease in wax crystallinity during crystallization. When ESE is added to n-PW, the wax crystal obtained becomes smaller without decreasing in crystallinity; consequently, the gel hardness is dramatically increased. By using ESE, the total amount of wax in a lipstick can be decreased by 30% without spoiling the stick toughness, thereby achieving glossy application and smooth texture.

  • Apart from hydrates, asphaltenes, and inorganic minerals, paraffinic waxes are also very important in flow assurance area. Evaluation of wax gel behavior has been important as off-shore oil recovery becomes more popular in oil production. Restart after either planned or emergency shutdown requires pump operation in high pressure since a waxy oil forms troublesome gel. In this paper, vane method is introduced to determine wax gel strength by determining yield stress. Prediction of gel strength are discussed in qualitative and quantitative manners.

  • Total lipid were extracted from the eggs of Fugu xanthopterus and were then resolved into lipid subclasses by silica gel column chromatograpy. The fatty acid composition of total lipid, triacylglycerols, phospholipids and wax esters of these oils were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography. Proximate percentage of total lipid from the sample was 12.63%. The lipid classes of eggs of Fugu xanthopterus fractionated by silica gel column chromatograpy were 59.37% of triacylglycerols, 15.46% of phospholipids, 6.9% of wax esters. The egg lipid obtained from Fugu xanthopterus was enriched with DHA in every class. In particular, the phospholipid contained the highest level of DHA(19.3%) than the other. The sum of polyenoic acids(27.4%). The fatty alcohols were mainly composed of saturated alcohols such as C16:0 alcohol(62.6%), C14:0(7.9%) and C18:0(5.8%), while the level of polyene alcohols was strikingly low compared with that of saturated alcohols.

  • Male-specific protein (MSP) is a soluble protein which is accumulated in high amounts In the hemolymph and other organs of adult male wax moth. The MSP was purified from adult male wax moth by gel filtration and reversed Phase column chromatography, and its amino acid sequence was determined. Three internal amino acid sequences of MSP were obtained by the in-gel digestion method using trypsin because of its blocked N-terminus. (omitted)

  • In this study, Polyethylene wax, which was produced in manufacturing process of high density polyethylene was grafted with maleic anhydride (MAH). The influences of reaction parameters on the graft polymerization as well as the effect of hydrolysis of the anhydride functions were investigated. The results show that the grafting degree increased and conversion of maleic anhydride decreased with an increase in MAH monomer content. This means the highest grafting efficiency for the reaction can be met when MAH monomer content is about 15 wt%. DCP (dicumyl peroxide) and DTBP (di-tert-butyl peroxide) have been used as the initiator and the highest yield of grafting was obtained when the initiator content is about 0.5 wt%. However, It can be seen that the gel content values of this polyethylene wax grafted MAH were below 2%. It was also observed that the grafting degree increased with an increase in reaction temperature and the maximum value was reached 2 hours later. Although MAH functions grafted onto polyethylene wax were mainly in the carboxylic acid forms, some anhydride form of MAH appeared in over 5% of grafting degree. As a result of hydrolysis reaction, it was observed that the conversion of anhydride group into carboxylic acid group was reached up to 10%.

  • A juvenile hormone binding protein (JHBP) has been isolated from the whole body homogenate of Galleria rnellonella final instar larvae by gel filtration. The isolated protein is homogenous as judged by column chromatography and gel electrophoresis in the presence and absence of denaturing agent. The JHBP has a relative molecular weight of 32 k by denaturing gel electrophresis and 28 k by gel filtration. The protein exhibits a dissociation constant of 3.9 x M for JH 111.

  • In this study, we have investigated the influence of the nature of solvent on the grafting reaction of maleic anhydride onto polyethylene wax obtained as a by-product in a high density polyethylene plant. The results show that the grafting ratio in xylene as a solvent was higher than toluene. This is because xylene has excellent monomer solubility, swelling property and miscibility. It has been also observed that grafting degree shows an initial jump in percentage of grafting with increasing amount of solvent, from 0% v/w to 200% v/w giving maximum grafting in 200% v/w and then slightly decreases on further increase in the amount of solvent and becomes almost constant. It can be also seen that gel content was not formed under the use of solvent. It means that solvent prevented cross-linking reaction due to chain transfer reactions to solvent molecules. Studies of melt viscosity at $140^{\circ}C$ showed that viscosity increased after grafting of maleic anhydride onto polyethylene wax.

  • Apolipophorin-III (apoLp-III) was isolated and purified from the last larval hemolymph of Galleria mellonella by the KBr gradient ultracentrifugation and gel chromatography (Sephadex G-100). In this paper, we examined that apoLp-III is taken up into the last larval fat bodies in Galleria mellonella. The last larval fat body tissues were incubated at room temperature for 30 min with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled apoLp-III (FITC-apoLp-III). Fluorescein microscopy and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) revealed that the last larval fat body tissues internalize FITC-apoLp-III. The results show that the apoLp-III is taken up by the last larval fat body.

  • Apolipophorin-III (apoLp-III) was isolated and purified from the last instar larval hemolymph of Galleria mellonella by gel chromatography (Sephadex G-100) and ion exchange chromatography (CM-52). In the present study, I wanted to show that apoLp-III is taken up into the adult ovary in Galleria mellonella. Adult ovary tissues were incubated at room temperature for 30 min with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled apoLp-III. Fluorescence microscopy and sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS)-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) revealed that adult ovary tissues internalize fluorescence-labeled apoLp-III. The results suggest that apoLp-III is taken up by the adult ovary.
