In this paper, we proposed a method for extracting facial characteristics of human being in an image. Given a pair of gray level sample images taken with and without human being, the face of human being is segmented from the image. Noise in the input images is removed with the help of Gaussian filters. Edge maps are found of the two input images. The binary edge differential image is obtained from the difference of the two input edge maps. A mask for face detection is made from the process of erosion followed by dilation on the resulting binary edge differential image. This mask is used to extract the human being from the two input image sequences. Features of face are extracted from the segmented image. An effective recognition system using the discrete wave let transform (DWT) is used for recognition. For extracting the facial features, such as eyebrows, eyes, nose and mouth, edge detector is applied on the segmented face image. The area of eye and the center of face are found from horizontal and vertical components of the edge map of the segmented image. other facial features are obtained from edge information of the image. The characteristic vectors are extrated from DWT of the segmented face image. These characteristic vectors are normalized between +1 and -1, and are used as input vectors for the neural network. Simulation results show recognition rate of 100% on the learned system, and about 92% on the test images.

In the method of 3D modeling, stereo matching method which obtains three dimensional depth information from the two images is taken from the different view points. In general, it is very essential work for the 3D modeling from 2D stereo images to estimate the exact disparity through fading the conjugate pair of pixel from the left and right image. In this paper to solve the problems of the stereo image disparity estimation, we introduce a novel approach method to improve the exactness and efficiency of the disparity. In the first place, we perform a wavelet transformation of the stereo images and set the reference points in the image by the feature-based matching method. This reference points have very high probability over 95 %. In the base of these reference points we can decide the size of the variable block searching windows for estimating dense disparity of area based method and perform the ordering constraint to prevent mismatching. By doing this, we could estimate the disparity in a short time and solve the occlusion caused by applying the fried-sized windows and probable error caused by repeating patterns.

Two-dimensional imaging of $V_s$ profile becomes more important in Korea because of the large horizontal variation of soil stiffness. To obtain a shear-wave velocity profile in geotechnical practice, various seismic nondestructive investigation methods are being frequently used. In this study, harmonic wavelet analysis of wave (HWAW) method is applied to the determination of $V_s$ profile to overcome some of weaknesses in the existing surface wave methods. HWAW method which is based on time-frequency analysis using harmonic wavelet transform has been developed to determine phase and group velocities of waves. Field testing of this method is relatively simple and fast because one experimental setup which consists of one pair of receivers is needed to determine $V_s$ profile of site. The proposed method uses the signal portion of the maximum local signal/noise ratio to evaluate the phase velocity to minimize the effects of noise, and uses single array inversion which considers receiver locations. Field tests were performed in 2 sites in order to evaluate accuracy of test method and estimate the applicability of 2-D imaging by HWAW method. Through field applications and comparison with other test results, the good accuracy and applicability of the proposed method were verified.

In this paper, we proposed a parallel fast 2-D discrete wavelet transform hardware architecture based on lifting scheme. The proposed architecture improved the 2-D processing speed, and reduced internal memory buffer size. The previous lifting scheme based parallel 2-D wavelet transform architectures were consisted with row direction and column direction modules, which were pair of prediction and update filter module. In 2-D wavelet transform, column direction processing used the row direction results, which were not generated in column direction order but in row direction order, so most hardware architecture need internal buffer memory. The proposed architecture focused on the reducing of the internal memory buffer size and the total calculation time. Reducing the total calculation time, we proposed a 4-way data flow scheduling and memory based parallel hardware architecture. The 4-way data flow scheduling can increase the row direction parallel performance, and reduced the initial latency of starting of the row direction calculation. In this hardware architecture, the internal buffer memory didn't used to store the results of the row direction calculation, while it contained intermediate values of column direction calculation. This method is very effective in column direction processing, because the input data of column direction were not generated in column direction order The proposed architecture was implemented with VHDL and Altera Stratix device. The implementation results showed overall calculation time reduced from $N^2/2+\alpha$ to $N^2/4+\beta$, and internal buffer memory size reduced by around $50\%$ of previous works.

In this paper, a new stereo image watermarking scheme based-on adaptive disparity estimation algorithm is proposed. That is, a watermark image is embedded into the right image of a stereo image pair by using the DWT and disparity information is extracted from this watermarked right image and the left image. And then, both of this extracted disparity information and the left image are transmitted to the recipient through the communication channel. At the receiver, the watermarked right image is reconstructed from the received left image and disparity information through an adaptive matching algorithm. a watermark image is finally extracted from this reconstructed right image. From some experiments using CCETT's 'Manege' and 'Friends' images as a stereo image and English alphabet '3DRC' as a watermark image, it is found that the PSNRs of the watermarked image from the reconstructed right images through the adaptive matching algorithm & DWT is improved 2.03 dB, 3.03 dB and robusted against various attacks. These experimental results also suggest a possibility of practical implementation of an adaptive matching also-rithm-based stereo imagewatermarking scheme proposed in this paper.

We present the IRC images of M51, a pair of interacting galaxies. Given the high angular resolution (7.4") and the wide field of view (~ 10') covering almost the entire M51 system, we investigate dust properties and their connection to the spiral arm structure. We have applied image-filtering processes including the wavelet analysis to the N3 image, which traces the total stellar mass best among the IRC bands. From this filtered image, the center, arm, and interarm regions are defined. A color, or flux ratio among the MIR bands, has been measured at each pixel (3.7" in size). We find a wide variety of S7/S11 with a difference between arm and interarm regions. We also find that at some positions S11 seems to be higher than predicted by MW dust models. Estimated contributions from the stellar continuum and gas emission lines to the band are not enough to explain this discrepancy. From these results, we deduce that the PAH ionization condition and its fraction to the total dust mass in M51 are different from those in MW.

The evaluation of shear modulus (or shear wave velocity) profile of the site is very important in various fields of geotechnical engineering. In the field, there exist spatial variations of shear modulus that case uncertainty in the geotechnical analysis or design. So it is necessary to evaluate the spatial variation of shear wave velocities of the soil site. In this study, the HWAW method is applied to the determination of a 3-D Vs map of soil site. The HWAW method, which is based on harmonic wavelet transforms, has been developed to determine phase and group velocities of waves. The HWAW method uses only the signal portion of the maximum local signal/noise ratio to evaluate the phase velocity in order to minimize the effect of the noise. The field testing of this method is relatively simple and fast because only one experimental setup, which consists of one pair of receivers on the surface, is needed using a short receiver spacing setup (1~3m). These characteristics make it possible to determine detailed local Vs profile in the site with lateral Vs variation and to evaluate 3-D Vs map by performing a series of tests on the grid. To estimate the applicability of the proposed method, field tests were performed. Through field applications validity and applicability of the proposed method were verified.

We integrated and correlated datasets from surface and subsurface geophysics, drilling cores, and engineering geology to identify geological interfaces and characterize the joints and fracture zones within the rock mass. The regional geometry of a geologically weak zone was investigated via a fence projection of electrical resistivity data and a borehole image-processing system. Subsurface discontinuities and intensive fracture zones within the rock mass are delineated by cross-hole seismic tomography and analyses of dip directions in rose diagrams. The dynamic elastic modulus is studied in terms of the P-wave velocity and Poisson's ratio. Subsurface discontinuities, which are conventionally identified using the N value and from core samples, can now be identified from anomalous reflection coefficients (i.e., acoustic impedance contrast) calculated using a pair of well logs, comprising seismic velocity from suspension-PS logging and density from logging. Intensive fracture zones identified in the synthetic seismogram are matched to core loss zones in the drilling core data and to a high concentration of joints in the borehole imaging system. The upper boundaries of fracture zones are correlated to strongly negative amplitude in the synthetic trace, which is constructed by convolution of the optimal Ricker wavelet with a reflection coefficient. The standard deviations of dynamic elastic moduli are higher for fracture zones than for acompact rock mass, due to the wide range of velocities resulting from the large numbers of joints and fractures within the zone.
