  • Optimal net residual dispersion (NRD) and effective launching power range of optical transmission links with optical phase conjugator (OPC) and dispersion management (DM) for compensating the distorted wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) signals due to interaction of group velocity dispersion (GVD) and optical nonlinear effects. WDM systems considered in this research have optical links with the random distribution of residual dispersion per span (RDPS) in each single mode fiber (SMF) spans of only one half transmission section for designing the adaptive optical transmission system configurations. It is confirmed that optimal NRD is 10 ps/nm and effective launching power range is obtained to be -8~1 dBm under NRD = 10 ps/nm in optical links with total dispersion controlled by precompensation. And, it is also confirmed that optimal NRD is -10 ps/nm and effective launching power range is obtained to be -7.5~1 dBm under NRD = -10 ps/nm in optical links with total dispersion controlled by postcompensation.

  • A flexible dispersion-managed link configuration is proposed by using single-mode fibers (SMFs) and dispersion-compensating fibers (DCFs) with irregular dispersion coefficients and lengths over all fiber spans for compensating of WDM channels distortion due to the group velocity dispersion and nonlinear effects of optical fibers. The flexibility of link is enabled by artificially distributing of these fibers based on the dispersion coefficients of DCFs in each half transmission section. The simultaneous ascending and descending (AD) distribution of the DCF's coefficients before and after the optical phase conjugator, respectively, best compensates the distorted wavelength division multiplexed signals in the optical link. Therefore, to improve the compensation effect of the distorted WDM channels, AD distribution is needed to choice regardless of fiber lengths and the residual dispersion per span and fiber's dispersion coefficients.

  • Dispersion management (DM) is the typical technique compensating for the distorted signals due to interaction of group velocity dispersion (GVD) and optical nonlinear effects for transmitting wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) channel with the excellent performance. Optimal net residual dispersion (NRD) and effective launching power range of optical transmission links with random distribution and artificial distribution of single mode fiber (SMF) length and residual dispersion per span (RDPS) required to flexibly design of optical links in DM. It is confirmed that optimal net residual dispersion (NRD) are +10 ps/nm and -10 ps/nm controlled by precompensation and postcompensation, respectively, in both of the considered distribution patterns of SMF length and RDPS. And, in optimal NRD, system performance in optical links with the descending distribution of SMF length and the ascending distribution of RDPS among the artificial distribution patterns are more improved, consequently, effective launching power range is expanded by almost 2 dB than those in optical links with the uniform distribution.

  • We proposed a flexible link configuration in a system combining mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) and dispersion management used for long-distance transmission of high-capacity optical signals such as wavelength division multiplexing signals, and examined specific methods to increase chromatic dispersion and nonlinear distortion compensation effects. The dispersion map proposed to increase the flexibility of dispersion-managed link configuration has a 'random-inverse' structure. That is, in the proposed dispersion map, the residual dispersion per span (RDPS) of each fiber span in the first half section up to the optical phase conjugator is randomly distributed, and the RDPS distribution in the second half section reverses the distribution pattern of the first section. Although the proposed dispersion map has a random distribution of RDPS, it was confirmed that the distortion compensation effect is improved due to the fact that the dispersion profile is symmetrical with respect to the optical phase conjugator. In the dispersion map of the 'random-inverse' configuration, it was also confirmed that the compensation effect of the distorted wavelength division multiplexing signal becomes improved when the magnitude of the RDPS allocated to each fiber span is large.

  • We have studied the dispersion properties of a 40 channel x 10 Gbit/s wavelength division multiplexer(WDM) transmission link using standard single mode fiber with all EDFA amplification over 30 x 100 km spans. The dispersion map of the link was investigated by adding fiber sections with positive or negative dispersion at the transmitter, within each amplifier span, and at the receiver. Optimum combinations of these dispersive fiber lengths were attained to significantly enhance the overall transmission performance.

  • Optical phase conjugation is one of techniques capable of compensating for distortion due to chromatic dispersion and nonlinearity, which are essential for long-distance transmission of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) signal. We proposed and analyzed a way to solve the limitations of this technology through dispersion map with periodic dispersion profile. In the proposed system, optical phase conjugator (OPC) is placed at the position of 1:2 or 2:1 of the entire link, and the dispersion profile of dispersion map has periodic shape in the form of a sine wave or an inverse-sine wave. It was confirmed that the effective compensation of the distorted 960 Gb/s WDM signal was further improved through the proposed periodic dispersion map when the OPC was located at the 1:2 point instead of the 2:1 point of the entire link. In addition, it was found that the maximum RDPS allocated to fiber span should be 1,800 ps/nm or more in order to increase the design flexibility of dispersion-managed link with the proposed periodic dispersion map.

  • A dispersion map was proposed to improve the compensation effect of a distorted WDM (wavelength division multiplexed) channel in a dispersion-managed link coupled with optical phase conjugation. The dispersion map is an origin-symmetric structure around the optical phase conjugator in the middle of the transmission path. In addition, the dispersion map has a form in which a constant dispersion accumulation pattern is repeated regularly. Through simulation, we confirmed that the application of the origin-symmetric dispersion map with a repetitively shaped configuration was more effective in compensating for the distorted WDM channel than in the dispersion-managed link with a conventional dispersion map. In addition, we confirmed that the compensation effect could be increased when the cumulative dispersion distribution of the origin-symmetric distribution map had a positive value in the first half section and a negative value in the second half section. Further, we observed that as the number of repeated dispersion accumulation patterns increased, the residual dispersion per span should also be increased.

  • Design rules of optical transmission links with dispersion management (DM) and optical phase conjugation (OPC) for compensating optical signal distortion due to chromatic dispersion and self phase modulation (SPM) of single mode fiber (SMF) are investigated in this paper. Design rules consist of optimal net residual dispersion (NRD) and optimal range of launching power of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) channels as a function of total transmission length and span length. In all considered total transmission length and span length, optimal NRD are obtained to +10 ps/nm and -10 ps/mn for transmission links, which is controlled by precompensation and postcompensation, respectively. It is confirmed that system performances are more improved and effective NRD for wide launching power have wider range as total transmission length and span length are more decreased.

  • Long-haul transmission of multiple transmission signals, such as wavelength division multiplexed (WDM), has became possible, because the signal distortion caused by chromatic dispersion and nonlinearity can be compensated by applying dispersion management, optical phase conjugation and combination of the two methods into the transmission link. The biggest obstacle to applying optical phase conjugation to an optical link is that the optical phase conjugator (OPC) must be located only in the middle of the entire transmission line. This paper shows that the location constraints of OPC can be overcome through the application of an asymmetric dispersion map. The location of the OPC considered in this paper exists between the 8th and 9th fiber spans out of a total of 48 fiber spans. Additionally, the dispersion map has an asymmetric cumulative dispersion profile with respect to the OPC. As a result of the simulation, it was confirmed that the distortion compensation effect of the WDM channel can be increased compared to the link to which the traditional dispersion map is applied, depending on the overall shape of the cumulative dispersion profile distribution of the proposed asymmetric dispersion map and the selection of the profile slope.

  • To expand the viewing angle of vertical alignment liquid crystal display (VA-LCD), a wide-band compensation film has been newly developed. VA-LCD needs a retardation film with improved oblique viewing property. The retardation film for VA-LCD has been fabricated by solvent casting and subsequent drawing triacetylcellulose (TAC) containing optical additives. Here, optical birefringence and wavelength dispersion of the retardation film strongly depend on the chemical structures of optical additives. Utilizing quantum mechanical computation, the polarizing anisotropy of retardation film was calculated with respect to additives. It is also realized that the wavelength dispersion of polarizing anisotropy depends on the type and location of substituent to the selected main isomer. When two propionates are substituted to the meta position of the selected main isomer, the wavelength dispersion of polarizing anisotropy shows the most gentle slop, which is well matched with the experimental results. The most gentle slop of wavelength dispersion means that the viewing angle characteristics of LCD are less influenced according to the wavelength of light source of LCD, and it's possible to make better image quality than the present level.
