  • This paper compares frequency domain and time domain predictions from the ShipMo3D ship motion library with observed motions from model tests and sea trials. ShipMo3D evaluates hull radiation and diffraction forces using the frequency domain Green function for zero forward speed, which is a suitable approach for ships travelling at moderate speed (e.g., Froude numbers up to 0.4). Numerical predictions give generally good agreement with experiments. Frequency domain and linear time domain predictions are almost identical. Evaluation of nonlinear buoyancy and incident wave forces using the instantaneous wetted hull surface gives no improvement in numerical predictions. Consistent prediction of roll motions remains a challenge for seakeeping codes due to the associated viscous effects.

  • The sapphire wafers for blue light emitting devices were manufactured by the implementation of the surface machining technology based on micro-tribology. This process has been performed by chemical and mechanical polishing process. The sapphire crystalline wafers were characterized by double crystal X-ray diffraction. The sample quality of sapphire crystalline wafer at surfaces has a full width at half maximum of 89 arcsec. The surfaces of sapphire wafer were mechanically affected by residual stress during the polishing process. The wave pattern of optical interference of sapphire wafer implies higher abrasion rate in the edge of the wafer than its center from the Newton's ring.

  • In this study, to minimize the above effect Zinc Oxide(ZnO) thin films on Si(100) substrate were deposited by RF magnetron sputter with changing sputtering conditions such as Ar/$O_2$ gas ratios, RF power, substrate temperature, chamber prsssure and target-substrate distance. To analyze a crystallographic properties of the films, ${\Theta}/2{\Theta}$ mode X-ray diffraction, rocking curve and Alpha-step were performed. SAW filters were fabricated to evaluate the feasibility of ZnO thin film as a piezoelectrical materials and the processes of ZnO SAW filters using etch and lift-off were compared.

  • ZnO thin films were deposited on Al and Pt electrodes by an RF reactive sputtering system for the fabrication of FBAR (film bulk acoustic wave resonator), and the effect of thermal treatment temperature on their c-axis preferred orientation was investigated. SEM experiments show that columnar structure of ZnO thin films were grown with c-axis normal to electrode material, and XRD experiments show that both ZnO films were grown with (002) plane preferred orientation, but larger diffraction peak was observed with Pt electrode. The peak intensity increased with higher thermal treatment temperature, but c-axis preferred orientation was diminished. The surface roughness of Al thin film was higher than that of Pt, and these affect the surface roughness of ZnO film deposited on the electrode. Though the preferred orientation with respect to Pt(111) plane was improved with higher thermal treatment temperature, this could not improve the c-axis orientation of ZnO film.

  • We report a theoretical research for the condition of electromagnetic shield breaching when a narrow aperture is punctured in thin metal film. To calculate electromagnetic field transmission through a narrow slit, a Rayleigh wave expansion has been applied for free standing, thin metal film. We found that the DC electric field allows perfect transmission when the length of the slit is infinite, regardless of the other geometrical factors such as slitwidth and thickness. Slitwidth dependent transmission spectra as a function of frequency shows a cutoff frequency that decreases almost linearly to the slitwidth, giving that almost successful shielding is only possible when the slitwidth is smaller than 1 micron.

  • A finite element formulation for the time-domain analysis of linear transient elastodynamic problems is presented based on the weak form obtained by applying the Galerkin's method to the integro-differential equations which contain the initial conditions implicitly and does not include the inertia terms. The weak form is extended temporally under the assumptions of the constant and linear time variations of field variables, since the time-stepping algorithms such as the Newmark method and the Wilson ${\theta}$-method are not necessary, obtaining two kinds of implicit finite element equations which are tested for numerical accuracy and convergency. Three classical examples having finite and infinite domains are solved and numerical results are compared with the other analytical and numerical solutions to show the versatility and accuracy of the presented formulation.

  • This report summarizes the results of global performance analysis of TLP(Tension Leg Platform) at in-place operation condition. The frequency and time domain analysis were performed to calculate the wave induced dynamic responses of TLP using the commercial 3-D diffraction program, MOSES. As results of the analysis, air-gap, excursion and tension on the tendons&risers were provided. For verifying, the existed numerical and experimental result were compared with the results of the present study.

  • Ion beam assisted deposition(IBAD) technique was used to synthesize hard coatings including diamond-like carbon(DLC), carbon nitride(CN) and metal-ceramic multilayered films. It was found that DLC films formed at low energy ion bombardment possess more $Sp^3$ bonds and much higher hardness. The films exhibited an excellent wear resistance. Nanometer multialyered Fe/TiC films was deposited by ion beam sputtering. The structure and properties were strongly dependent on the thickness of the individual layers and modulation wave length. It was disclosed that both hardness and toughness of the films could be enhanced by adjusting the deposition parameters. The CN films synthesized by IBAD method consisted of tiny crystallites dispersed in amorphous matrix, which were identified by electron diffraction pattern to be $\beta -C_3N_4$.

  • In this study, a finite element model is employed to simulate the diffraction of waves caused by a change of water depths. The model is firstly applied to the estimation of reflection coefficients of monochromatic waves over a sinusoidally varying topography. Predicted coefficients are compared with those of the eigenfunction expansion method and laboratory measurements. A good agreement is observed. The model is then used to investigate effects of heights of bottom topography and number of ripples on variation of reflection coefficients of monocromatic water waves.

  • A parametric loudspeaker is a device to generate highly directional sound using ultrasounds. The parametric loudspeaker could be used to focus sound in a limited space, so it is important to study the characteristics of the parametric loudspeaker in near-field. Mechanism of the audible sound generation in the parametric loudspeaker is explained by nonlinear interaction of the ultrasounds and is modeled as KZK equation, the nonlinear wave equation which contains attenuation, nonlinearity and diffraction. To measure the directional characteristics of the parametric loudspeaker precisely, a method to reduce the spurious signal which taints the measured signal was invented. With the method, directivity patterns of the parametric loudspeaker were measured and compared to the approximated solution and piston sources.
