A fundamental study was conducted to obtain the basic data involved in nondestructive quality evaluation of the fruit and vegetables. An experimental equipment for ultrasonic propagation characteristics of the fruit and vegetables such as radish , carrot , potato, and apple was set up and also power spectrum analysis system of an ultrasonic wave through the fruit and vegetables was set up. The velocity and attenuation of ultrasonic wave through the tissue specimens from the fruit and vegetables were measured and analyzed. The elastic modulus and density by the mechanical method currently used were compared with those using by ultrasonic method. The ultrasonic tranit time was almost linearly increased with the length of the specimens and attenuation of ultrasonic was mainly affected by the internal flbrous structure of the products. The regression equation was derived from the highly correlated experimental variables.
In this study, the characteristics of site amplification at seismic observation stations in Japan were estimated using the attenuation relationship of each station's response spectrum. Ground motion records observed after 32 earthquakes were employed to construct the attenuation relationship. The station correction factor at each KiK-net station was compared to the transfer functions between the base rock and the surface. For each station, the plot of the station correction factor versus the period was similar in shape to the graphs of the transfer function (amplitude ratio versus period). Therefore, the station correction factors are effective for evaluating site amplifications considering the period of ground shaking. In addition, the station correction factors were evaluated with respect to the average shear wave velocities using a geographic information system (GIS) dataset. Lastly, the site amplifications for specific periods were estimated throughout Japan.
It is well known that grain boundary cavitation is the main failure mechanism in austenitic stainless steel under tensile hold creep-fatigue interaction conditions. The cavities are nucleated at the grain boundary during cyclic loading and grow to become grain boundary cracks. The attenuation of ultrasound depends on scattering and absorption in polycrystalline materials. Scattering occurs when a propagation wave encounters microstructural discontinuities, such as internal voids or cavities. Since the density of the creep-fatigue cavities increases with the fatigue cycles, the attenuation of ultrasound will also be increased with the fatigue cycles and this attenuation can be detected nondestructively. In this study, it is found that individual grain boundary cavities are formed and grow up to about 100 cycles and then, these cavities coalesce to become cracks. The measured ultrasonic attenuation increased with the cycles up to cycle 100, where it reached a maximum value and then decreased with further cycles. These experimental measurements strongly indicate that the open pores of cavities contribute to the attenuation of ultrasonic waves. However, when the cavities develop, at the grain boundary cracks whose crack surfaces are in contact with each other, there is no longer any open space and the ultrasonic wave may propagate across the cracks. Therefore, the attenuation of ultrasonic waves will be decreased. This phenomenon of maximum attenuation is very important to judge the stage of grain boundary crack development, which is the indication of the dangerous stage of the structures.
Parametric density concept is proposed for a long-range pipeline health monitoring. This concept is designed to obtain the attenuation of ultrasonic guided waves propagating in underwater pipelines without complicated calculation of attenuation dispersion curves. For the study, three different pipe materials such as aluminum, cast iron, and steel are considered, ten different transporting fluids are assumed, and four different geometric pipe dimensions are adopted. It is shown that the attenuation values based on the parametric density concept reasonably match with the attenuation values obtained from dispersion curves; hence, its efficiency is proved. With this concept, field engineers or inspectors associated with long-range pipeline health monitoring would take the advantage of easier capturing wave attenuation value, which is a critical variable to decide sensor location or sensors interval.
This paper describes a method of detecting formation boundaries, and permeable fractures, from frequency-domain Stoneley wave logs. Field data sets were collected between the depths of 330 and 360 m in well EE-4 in the Higashi-Hachimantai geothermal field, using a monopole acoustic logging tool with a source central frequency of 15 kHz. Stoneley wave amplitude spectra were calculated by performing a fast Fourier transform on the waveforms, and the spectra were then collected into a frequency-depth distribution of Stoneley wave amplitudes. The frequency-domain Stoneley wave log shows four main characteristic peaks at frequencies 6.5, 8.8, 12, and 13.3 kHz. The magnitudes of the Stoneley wave at these four frequencies are affected by formation properties. The Stoneley wave at higher frequencies (12 and 13.3 kHz) has higher amplitudes in hard formations than in soft formations, while the wave at lower frequencies (6.5 and 8.8 kHz) has higher amplitudes in soft formations than in hard formations. The correlation of the frequency-domain Stoneley wave log with the logs of lithology, degree of welding, and P-wave velocity is excellent, with all of them showing similar discontinuities at the depths of formation boundaries. It is obvious from these facts that the frequency-domain Stoneley wave log provides useful clues for detecting formation boundaries. The frequency-domain Stoneley wave logs are also applicable to the detection of a single permeable fracture. The procedure uses the Stoneley wave spectral amplitude logs at the four frequencies, and weighting functions. The optimally weighted sum of the four Stoneley wave spectral amplitudes becomes almost constant at all depths, except at the depth of a permeable fracture. The assumptions that underlie this procedure are that the energy of the Stoneley wave is conserved in continuous media, but that attenuation of the Stoneley wave may occur at a permeable fracture. This attenuation may take place at anyone of the four characteristic Stoneley wave frequencies. We think our multispectral approach is the only reliable method for the detection of permeable fractures.

The purpose of this paper was to develop a nondestructive evaluation method of sintered material by ultrasonic method. The density distribution of sintered material becomes inhomogeneous partially because of the friction between the powder and the die during compaction. The inhomogeneity was investigated by measurement of the energy attenuation coefficient and the shift of the center frequency in the frequency spectrum of the ultrasonic reflection echo. The experimental results showed that the center frequency of reflection wave depended linearly on the density of sintered materials. However, the attenuation coefficient decreased inversely as the density increased. This study shows that the shift of the center frequency in the frequency spectrum of reflection wave can be used to a nondestructive evaluation of sintered materials.

This paper suggests the 2 D.O.F mathematical model of the High Frequency Vibro-Hammer (HFVH), introduces an experimental method for measuring of the attenuation of piling vibration and proves what experiments are coincident with the equation of wave propagation. As vibratory installation of piles and casings has many economic merits in the construction field, most of all contractors prefer to vibratory pile driving method than the other. Compared to impact pile driving, vibratory installation has the advantage of reducing vibration or noise pollution and can drive piles under high frequency. Experiments serve estimations of capabilities and limitations of the HFVH's excitation force and finding of sensitivity for important soil resistance parameters. Also, we discuss the HFVH that can drive with three kinds of input waves (triangular, sine and square wave) and propose the design of parameters to improve actuating performance in it.

The vertical attenuation of structureborne noise in a ship structure is studied by means of the wave guide theory. When modeling a ship structure as an acoustic wave guide system the cross mode is derived from the assumption about the boundary of the system, i.e. the constraint due to transverse frames. In this paper, the constraint is relaxed so that the displacement at the boundaries could take place. The numerical result shows better agreement with the measured one than that of the previous assumption of fixed boundary condition in the low frequency region. The effect of local changes of mass and damping factors on the attenuation losses are also investigated numerically.

Two-dimensional hydrodynamic analysis was performed to analyze the attenuating characteristics of shock waves generated by the detonation of the bulkhead initiator. Through the interlocking analysis between HNS and HMX stacking initiator and STS bulkhead, we have precisely simulated detonation growth and pressure wave attenuation phenomena. The free surface velocity at the surface of the bulkhead was measured for quantitative comparison with the test data by VISAR. As a result, it was confirmed that the pressure attenuating pattern of the shock wave exponentially decreased according to the bulkhead thickness. The observed inflection point at the particle velocity measured over time is due to the subsequent propagation of the shock wave due to the rapid spallation of the interface between the detonator and the bulkhead.
An underground explosion crests shock waves, which propagate to a buried structure through the이 ground. Due to the explosion, very high stresses and large deformation occur in the ground so that the shock waves decay gradually. In this study the numerical simulation of the ground shock attenuation has teen performed. One dimensional wave equation is presented and the finite difference method is applies. A Cap model is adopted to describe the stress-strain behavior of the ground. The results are expressed by the attenuation of the peak stress and the particle vrelocity by the time and the distance.
