Objectives: This study examined the use of health impact assessment (HIA) as a tool for intersectoral collaboration using the case of an HIA project conducted in Gwang Myeong City, Korea. Methods: A typical procedure for rapid HIA was used. In the screening step, the Aegi-Neung Waterside Park Plan was chosen as the target of the HIA. In the scoping step, the specific methods and tools to assess potential health impacts were chosen. A participatory workshop was held in the assessment step. Various interest groups, including the Department of Parks and Greenspace, the Department of Culture and Sports, the Department of Environment and Cleansing, civil societies, and residents, discussed previously reviewed literature on the potential health impacts of the Aegi-Neung Waterside Park Plan. Results: Potential health impacts and inequality issues were elicited from the workshop, and measures to maximize positive health impacts and minimize negative health impacts were recommended. The priorities among the recommendations were decided by voting. A report on the HIA was submitted to the Department of Parks and Greenspace for their consideration. Conclusions: Although this study examined only one case, it shows the potential usefulness of HIA as a tool for enhancing intersectoral collaboration. Some strategies to formally implement HIA are discussed.
For the purpose of finding correlation between the characteristics of the rural residents and the maintenance activities of naturally favorable waterside spaces, this paper has conducted a research with the focus on the three model case regions in Japan. The methods of the research included surveys, interviews, and documents. The research confirmed that the three regions in focus have characteristics distinct from one another. The rate of participation in group activities was high in a region, with members that belong to groups most active in the maintenance activities. Reasons for their participation included: to manage the local area themselves; and to promote cooperation and friendships among the residents. This proves that participation in the maintenance activities has also attributed to the formation of close communities in the regions. According to the analytic conclusion of the factors related to participation, the residents' experience to have been involved in a professional education program which induces communal participation, acted more as the major factor than the individual ones.

The Purpose of this study is to calculate the importance of the indicators for low carbon rural village planning. We made two kinds of indicators for inland area and waterside area to consider regional disparities. To develop indicators, a draft of the indicators was estimated with collected research materials and 42 experts reviewed this draft three times with modified delphi technique to check the validity and revise the draft. As a result, the inland indicators were settled with 4 domains 8 items 20 indicators and the waterside indicators were 4 domains 8 items 22 indicators. And next, calculating the importance of each indicators is progressed by AHP, analytic hierarchy process. So 42 experts chose the best important indicator related to air conditioning and heating or agricultural spin off in two kinds of indicators. The final indicators will be used to realize low carbon rural village planning in future which the government is pushing forward with construction of six-hundred low carbon green village.

The freshwater lakes located at the fringe of urban cities are a habitat for diverse organisms. However, they are facing severe danger of environment deterioration and water pollution caused by reckless development of the area. In this study, an ecological management plan was suggested to promote the biodiversity through appointing management area based on the research and analysis data of flora and fauna as well as maintain biodiversity and harmonize utilization of freshwater lakes such as Duryang Reservoir at Sacheon, Gyeongsangnam-do. Base on the data of ecological research and analysis, this study conducted research on biotope assessment, wild life habitat assessment and presence of protected species. As a result, the ecosystem conservation area including multi-layer structured natural forests, waterside and wetland that are home to various species and the edge area with high habitat diversity were recognized as highly preservable regions. Management areas were ecologically disturbed region, highly polluted commercial district and damaged waterside caused by fishing. Proactive management must be implemented through vegetation management such as vegetation transition and shrub planting as well as establishing pollutant management system. The deterioration of waterside and forest vegetation of freshwater lake has a direct influence on biodiversity and water quality. Therefore, the conservation area and development area should be totally separated from each other, and the development area must be restored and managed strictly.

The purpose of this study is to identify characteristics of spatial structure of Jiangnan water town in China which has been developed along the water channel. Spatial structural characteristics of the water town, Wuzhen and Nanxun in Zhejiang Province are as follows. First, location of town, spatial framework, lot division, and architectural style get determined by the water channel. The water channel is constructed in cross shape, T-shape, or in combination. Secondly, public space of water town is established along main water channel. Visually and functionally alternating private buildings are established on the water channel side and they are creating unique landscape of Jiangnan water town in overall harmony. Thirdly, residential area is established on the east-west water channel side with southward sunny-faced arrangement and waterside residence is in introvert spatial structure with courtyard but the exterior space is connected with water channel intimately. Fourthly, various spatial components along the water channel enrich the sense of place in water town. The components are corridor with roof, tea house, waterside steps, waterside theater and watergate etc. Uniqueness of place is becoming the core competence in modern townscape. In this aspect, Jiangnan water town with historical and cultural accumulation is suggesting a significant implication. Major implications are as follows. First, promotion of proximity to the water is the basic value that the spatial plan of waterfront needs to pursue. Secondly, mixed use is essential for effective land use and revitalization of waterfront. Thirdly, waterfront plan based on the local uniqueness as the place asset is being required.
The Herbal Vegetation on Running Waterside in the Main Stream of Genmho River, Daegu and Gyeongsanbuk-do, Korea was investigated by the methodology from June to August of 1994 and analyzed distribution characteristics of vegetation that was related Water Environment. The vegetation is divided into 6 communities of Persicaria sieboldi-Persicaria hydropiper community, Persicaria thunbergii community, Impatiens textori community, Zizania latifoloa community, Phragmites communis community and Echinochloa crus-galli var. oryzicola community. A BOD and COD that indicate degree of contamination in water were showed 0.9 ppm and 1.6 ppm at upstream and 15.9 ppm and 24.8 ppm at downstream, respectively. The distribution patterns of vegetation have dominated by Impatiens textoricommunity in the upstream, by Persicaria sieboldi-Persicaria hydropiper community from upstream to mid-upstream, by Persicaria thunbergii community from upstream to midstream, by Zizania latifoloa community from nidstream to mid-downstream and by Phragmites communis community and Echinochloa crus-galli var. oryzicola community from mid-downstream to downstream. Especially, I suggested that Persicaria sieboldi-Persicaria hydropiper community and Persicaria thunbergii community will use as biotic indicator in water environment.

This study concerns the design strategy for the waterside of Gyeong-In Ara Waterway, Korea’s first constructed canal. This design focused on the creation of a new paradigm for waterway landscapes the major factors of which were geographical advantage, value of landscape and efficient approach. As the major space plan for the waterfront formed through the Gyeong-In Ara waterway from the Yellow Sea to the Han River, eight good views of the waterfront zone were designed by utilizing the waterway as a scenery viewpoint and, by constructing two traffic lanes for the scenic parkway connecting Incheon and the Gimpo terminal, both a linear greenway as well as various waterfront facilities were also designed. A boardwalk and bike path connecting the major theme parks were planned, and a waterfront pocket park was then organized based on the bike path. In this study, the result of the new waterfront result from the Gyeong-In Ara waterway was planned to have an identity as a new waterside culture space in order to achieve multiple functions including environmental, cultural, leisure, and tourism as well as management programs based on a variety of applied culture content and story-telling.

Using a questionnaire, this study examined the users' consciousness through the human five senses on the waterside space in the district of Minato Mirai 21, Yokohama located in the east of Kanagawa prefecture, which is well known for its waterfront in Japan. Among the users, the results of the questionnaire showed 52.2% of male, and 29.6% accounted for people in their twenties as the dominant groups. Out of the nineteen questions regarding the consciousness on the waterside space, 'feel the sea breeze' accounted for 237(78.7%) while 'the sea is visible' accounted for 217(72.1%). Then, the contents of the nineteen questions were re-classified into such seven items as the human five senses(sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell), activities, and the existence of facilities, discovering the consciousness of the users. The results demonstrated that touch(22.9%) and sight(20.8%) respectively were the most influential items.
