The effect of surfactant mixture 9on detergency and soil redeposition in a dry-cleaning system was investigated employing Aerosol OT as an anionic surfactant and Span 80 as a nonionic surfactant. The effect of charge system on soil deposition was also investigated in order to determine the optimum condition at which soil redeposition is minimum,. Soil deposition instead of soil redeposition on cotton, polyester and wool fabrics was measured employing petroleum solvent and perchloroethylene as organic solvents. The results were as follows. 1. Surface tension or interfacial tension was not changed by the addition of any surfactant or surfactant mixtures. In petroleum solvent however interfacial tension between solrent and water decreased when surfactants were added and increased when surfactants were mixed,. 2. The maximum amount of water solubilization increased as the mole fraction of Aerosol OT increased and more water was solubilized in petroleum solvent than in perchloroethylene. 3. The detergency of cotton was greater and the soil deposition rate was lower in Span 80 solution than in Aerosol OT solution. The soil deposition on cotton fabric decreased when water was solubilized in Aersol OT solution 4. The detergency and soil deposition rate of polyester fabric did not change by the surfactant type of the addition of surfactant mixture and soil deposition rate increased bywater solubilization. 5. Soil deposition on wool fabric was very high when Arosol OT was employed in perchloroethylene and the soil deposition did not change greatly by water solubilization.
Titrated Extract of Centella asiatica (TECA) is a poorly water-soluble extract from the Centella asiatica. Despite excellent wound preparation causes pain due to a low aqueous solubility and high hypertonicity and therefore, the patient's compliance of this drug is low. The objective of this study is to design a formulation of TECA with an improved therapeutic applicability via an adequate solubilization. A mixture of propylene glycol and ethoxylated hydrogenated caster oil achieved an acceptable solubilization of TECA (i.e. 10%) via a formulation of micelle. A preparation of extemporaneous TECA micelle was achieved by a dilution of the original micellar formulation with either water or saline. An estimated distribution of particle size was between 15.9 and 32.6 ㎜. The osmotic pressure of the formulation was found to be much lower than that found In a commercially available injectable (i.e. Madecassole). The erthrocytic hemolysis of micellar solution was lower than that with the conventional dosage form, consistent with the osmotic pressure data. Pain score after an injection of the micellar solution was assessed by the hind-paw writhing test using ICR mice and compared with that found with the conventional injectable. The data indicated that the injection of the micellar solution was a significantly less painful. These results indicated that a micellar solubilization, followed by an extemporaneous dilution, is a novel formulation of TECA with an improved therapeutic applicability.
The performance of elutriated acid fermentation with slurry-type piggery waste was investigated, especially to evaluate the effects of temperature and pre-treatment. In the first phase, the acid elutriation reactor with piggery waste after centrifugation operated at both mesophilic and thermophilic conditions to evaluate the effect of temperature. Solubilization yield($gVFAs/gSCOD_{prod.}$) and acidification rate($gVFAs/gSCOD_{prod.}$) in the thermophilic digestion were 0.45 and 0.55, which were higher than those of the mesophilic digestion, 0.25 and 0.45. In addition, the acid elutriation reactor at thermophilic temperature is more effective in removing e-coli. In the second phase, the acid elutriation reactor was fed with piggery waste before centrifugation. With piggery wastes before centrifugation, the solubilization yield and the acidificaton rate were 0.40 and 0.80, respectively, which were higher than the rates using piggery waste after centrifugation at both mesophilic and thermophilic conditions. The higher sludge volume reduction of 80% benefits sludge management. Furthermore, economical advantages can be achieved by removing the pre-treatment process, such as centrifugation. Consequently, the treatment with piggery waste before centrifugation proved to be effective. Also, the optimum temperature condition was estimated at mesophilic or thermophilic conditions, considering solubilization yields and acidification rates, though the system should be heated.
Micellization process of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) was studied by using the aromatic probe (benzene) which dissolved in aqueous DTAB solutions. Proton NMR chemical shift measurements of DTAB and DTAB-benzene system showed that benzene molecules solubilized near the micelle-water interface and that the solubilization sites within the micelles are different as the DTAB concentration is passing through 32.0 mM (hereafter we refer this concentration as the second CMC). The change of solubilization sites is also confirmed by abrupt changes of the chemical shifts and relaxation rates of benzene protons in DATB-benzene system at this concentration. It was revealed from the electrical conductivity and viscosity measurements that the solubilization of benzene caused the DTAB micelles to swell out and that the micelles prepared after the second CMC had a greater swelling effect than those prepared before the second CMC. The transition point which reflects the saturation of benzene molecules on the solubilization sites of micelles was observed at one benzene/micellized DTAB mole ratio from the electrical conductivity measurements. Along the different concentration of DTAB solution, this transition point is appeared clearly after the second CMC. From these results it is suggested that the shapes and/or sizes of DTAB micelles of the spherical micelle region prepared after the second CMC are different from those prepared before the second CMC.
The performance of the new aerobic digestion system combined with inorganic sludge separation unit and sludge solubilization unit, CaviTec II, is evaluated. Anaerobic digester effluent sludge is used for feed sludge of CaviTec II system. By addition of CaviTec II, the amount of cake generated is reduced by 27%, and the soluble nitrogen is reduced by 92%.
The Carbon source to enhance the denitrification is essential matter in the advanced sewage treatment. For the high level of nutrient removal, external carbons such as ethanol, methanol, volatile fatty acids and so on should be needed. In this study, the methods to increase the sludge solubilization and acidification rate were compared with waste activated sludges and food waste leachate. Ultrasonication and acids were used for the pretreatment of organic particles in sludges. As a results, the optimal temperature and HRT were $60^{\circ}C$ and 5 days, respectively. HAc, HPr, HBr, and other VFAs for acid fermentations reduced up to 22, 16, 14, and 48% with HRT reduction. For the increase of solubilization, 28% of solids destruction rate was shown at 0.3 watts/mL.
This work elucidates the effects of pretreatment of the sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plant by microwave irradiation on elutriated acid fermentation. These experiments typically fell into two process; pretreatment as microwave irradiation and elutriated acid fermentation for hydrolysis and acidification as main process of primary sludge. The results of maximum solubilization rate of B, D primary and secondary sludge were 0.042, 0.086 and 0.15 gSCODprod./gICODin and the optimum irradiation time of microwave on 2,450 MHz and 900 W were 5 min. for primary sludge and 7 min. for secondary sludge. From batch tests on elutriated acid fermentation that was used the pretreated primary sludge as microwave, the optimum pH and HRT (hydraulic retention time) were 7 and 5 days at $35^{\circ}C$ condition.
Recently, one of the most interesting topic in the field of wastewater treatment is the disposal of excess sludge. The new concept of excess sludge reduction with recirculation of solubilized sludge via effective microorganisms for cell disruption within the wastewater treatment process has been developed in this study. The alkalophiles for degradation of sludge cell wall were isolated as Exiguobacterium sp., which could be more effectively solubilized sludge in the anaerobic condition. The SCOD of solubilized excess sludge by Exiguobacterium sp. was up to about 2,000mg/L and average TN and TP concentration of solubilized component were 117mg/L and 58mg/L, respectively and C/N ratio was more than 17. To investigate the effects of solubilized sludge by alkalophiles on excess sludge reduction and nutrient removal efficiency, the pilot plant of $DF^{(S)}-MBR$ process, combined with membrane bioreactor and sludge solubilization tank, was operated. In the control run(without sludge solubilization), the daily sludge production was about 4.54 kgMLVSS/day. However, in the $DF^{(S)}-MBR$(with sludge solubilization), the daily sludge production was decreased to 1.39kgMLVSS/day. The effluent quality satisfied the effluent regulation in both cases. Furthermore, the $DF^{(S)}-MBR$ showed relatively better TN removal efficiency in spite of high influent loading. So we concluded that the solubilized excess sludge by alkalophiles was effectively degraded in the MBR process as the carbon source and 70% of sludge reduction efficiency can be achieved.
In order to investigate the effective pretreatment methods in WAS(=waste activated sludge) solubilization, the values of SCOD yield per unit SS (SCOD/gSS.hr) were compared. After the hydrodynamic cavitation with pH of 12.5, SCOD increased to 7800 mg/L, SS decreased to 45 % and the solubilization rate was 29 %. Combination of alkality (pH 12.5) and the cavitation seems to be the optimal condition for sludge solubilization. After the cavitational pretreatment, efficiencies of anaerobic digestion of the unfiltered sludge(the control), raw sludge and pretreated sludge were evaluated with BMP(=biochemical methane potential) tests. For evaluation of the biodegradability characteristics of pretreated sewage sludge, the methane production has been measured for 6 months. The methane production of pretreated sludge increased 1.4 times than that of untreated sludge. The result indicates that the cavitationally pretreated sludge was a better biodegradability substrate in anaerobic condition compared to raw sludge. It is obvious that cavitational pretreatment could enhance not only solubilization but also biodegradability of WAS. In conclusion, cavitational pretreatment of WAS to convert the particulate into soluble portion was shown to be effective in enhancing the digestibility of the WAS.
