This study investigates the behavior of water vapor permeability of a layered system to find out a comfortable combination of a layered system for outdoor activities and examines the water vapor permeability of various types of outdoor clothing fabrics. The layered system includes the base layer such as sportswool and polyester/cotton fabrics, the middle layer such as single and double sided fleece fabrics, and the shell layer such as polyurethane-coated, PTFE-laminated and microfiber fabrics in this experiment. Results show that the layered system was applied, it was working together as a whole having some influence on each other layer, though every layer offered varying degree of water vapor permeability. Water vapor permeability of layered system exactly followed the same trend as the shell layer, which is all vapor permeable water repellent fabrics as a single layer. The rate of water vapor transfer through a layered system is mainly related to the type of vapor permeable water repellent fabrics used for the shell layer.

Recently, Growing tendency for structure surface to use water repellent agent has increased steadily. But investigation of it's protection and durability property is not sufficient. Therefore, this paper shows the investigation about repellent property and micro structure's change in surface layer of mortar that is applied by water repellent agent. Water repellent property, absorption coefficient, air permeability, porosity and observation of micro construct was investigated according to water repellent agent type. The test results indicated that mortar applied water repellent agent appears tiny absorption coefficient, but air permeability is maintained. The reason is because silane solution is coating at capillary surface of a wall and minute pore structure is changeless.

When the concrete surface layer is damaged, The method of impregnating the concrete surface with a water repellent cannot secure the expected durability. Recently, various waterproofing and water-repellent materials were mixed into concrete or mortar to secure water repellency even inside cracks, but compressive strength was greatly reduced. In order to overcome the decrease in compressive strength, there has not yet been a study using the merits of organic and inorganic materials at the same time, so in this study, the physical properties and water repellency performance were evaluated by mixing an organic/inorganic composite water repellent appropriately mixed with an organic and inorganic material into the mortar. When mixed with organic/inorganic water repellent, the flow and air content were reduced by about 10% and 50% compared to the Liquid specimen. In the case of the P6L1 specimen, it was confirmed that the compressive strength decreased by about 3.5% compared to the non-mixed mortar at 39.5 MPa, the same as the existing water repellent, Powder. Water-repellent performance The organic-inorganic composite water repellent mixture specimen confirmed higher water repellency than the existing water repellent mixture powder, and the chloride penetration resistance evaluation result showed that the organic-inorganic composite water repellent mixture specimen reduced the passing charge by about 45% compared to the non-mixed mortar. In summary, it is judged that the P5L1 organic/inorganic composite water repellent mixed with a powder water repellent and a liquid water repellent in a ratio of 5:1 is the most reasonable to prevent the decrease in compressive strength and secure water repellency.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate failure characteristic and mechanism of four commercial water-repellent coatings for elevated temperature machinery applications. Method: Thermal degradation was performed for up to 64 thermal cycles. 1 cycle consists of 15 minute holding at 523K under 300rpm revolution and 15 minute-natural cooling. Contact angle was measured and microstructure of the coating layer was observed by using a scanning electron microscope. Results: Four kinds of commercial repellent coating showed hydrophobic or super-hydrophobic property implying that all coatings are suitable for room temperature application. Contact angle of three kinds of commercial coatings decreased rapidly after thermal exposure, while only one specimen having hydrophobic surface showed extremely slow degradation. Conclusion: Observed decrease in contact angle of the coatings were attributed to formation of macro-sized pores and disappearance of micro-protrusion during thermal exposure. Optimum water-repellent coating needs to be selected under the consideration of initial contact angle as sell as service temperature.
This study investigates the sound properties of fabric frictional sound (SPL, ${\Delta}L$, ${\Delta}f$) according to the film type of PTFE laminated vapor-permeable water-repellent fabrics in order to understand the relationship between SPL and the basic properties of fabrics such as layer, yarn type, and thickness of fiber. This study accesses their mechanical properties and determines how to control them to minimize SPL. Eight PTFE laminated water-repellent fabrics, composed of four different film types (A, B, C, D) and with two different fabrics, were used as test specimens. Frictional sounds generated at 1.21m/s were recorded by using a fabric sound generator and SPLs were analyzed through Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT). The mechanical properties of fabrics were measured by KES-FB. The SPL value was lowest at 74.4dB in film type A and highest as 85.5dB in type D. Based on ANOVA and post-hoc test, specimens were classified into less Loud Group (A, B) and Loud Group (C, D). It was shown that SPL was lower when 2 layer (instead of 3 layer), filament yarn than staple, and thin fiber than thick were used. In Group I, shearing properties (G, 2HG5), geometrical roughness (SMD), compressional properties (LC, RC) and weight (W) showed high correlation with SPL however, elongation (EM) and shear stiffness (G) did with SPL in Group II.
Purpose: To observe changes of coatings and lens materials with varying temperature to understand effect of temperature on plastic lens. Methods: In this study, three lenses of different refractive indices (2 of thiourethane oriented lenses, an allyl diglycol carbonate oriented lens) were exposed to high temperature (50, 80, and 100 degree) for 5 hours and changes of individual coating (anti-refractive coating, hard coating, and water repellent coating) were measured. Results: As a result, high-refractive index lenses did not exhibit significant variation of hardness. However, hardness of mid-refractive index lens were decreased when exposed to high temperature and destructions of hard coating layer was inferred. Surface contact angles of lens were decreased with increasing temperature and water repellent coating layer were damaged at higher than 80 degree. Conclusions: Multi including water repellent coatings on all three lenses with different refractive indices were damaged when exposed to at or higher than 80 degree. The degree of changes in mechanical and physical properties were depended on polymer material type.
The engineering properties of surface soils in natural terrain are changed due to wildfire. This change of engineering properties induced by wildfire is related to landslides occurrence. To investigate the change of soil properties caused by wildfire, the various soil tests are performed. The soil samples are obtained from the recently burned slopes of Yangyang area, Kangwon Province. The soil samples obtained from the burned slopes are classified into three types depending on the burning grade: the perfect burning grade, the intermediate burning grade, the non-burning grade. As the result of tests, the specific gravity and the dry unit weight of soils obtained from perfect and alternative burning grades are less than those of soils obtained from non-burning grade. It judges that an electronic force, ionic components and of soils are changed and organic matters in soils are burned by wildfire. The permeability of soil obtained from alternative burning grade is the lowest and that of soil obtained from perfect burning grade is the highest. The water-repellent layer is formed on soil surface by wildfire. The water-repellent layer is existed at the area of alternative turning grade, while the layer is not existed at the area of perfect burning grade. The water-repellent layer is collapsed in high temperature more than about $400^{\circ}C$.
The objectives of this study were to investigate the psychoacoustic properties of PTFE(Poly tetra Fluoroethylene) laminated vapor permeable water repellent fabrics which are frequently used for sportswear, to examine the relationship among fabrics' basic characteristics, mechanical properties and the psychoacoustic properties, and finally to propose the predicting model to minimize the psychoacoustic fabric sound. A total of 8 specimens' frictional sound were recorded and Zwicker's psychoacoustic parameters such as loudness(Z), sharpness(Z), roughness(Z), and fluctuation strength(Z) were calculated using the Sound Quality Program. Mechanical properties of specimens were measured by KES-FB system. Loudness(Z) of specimen D-1 was the highest, which means the rustling sound of the specimen D-1 was the most noisy. Statistically significant difference among film type was observed only in loudness(Z) for fabric sound. Based on ANOVA and post-hoc test, specimens were classified into less loud PTFE film group (groupI) and loud PTFE film group (groupII). Loudness(Z) was higher when staple yarn was used compared when filament yarn was used. According to the correlation between the mechanical properties of fabrics and loudness(Z) in groupI, the shear properties, compression properties and weight showed positive correlation with loudness(Z). According to the regression equation predicting loudness(Z) of groupI, the layer variable was chosen. In groupII, variables explaining the loudness(Z) were yarn types and shear hysteresis(2HG5).

Hydrophobic and Superhydrophobic surfaces are promising technology for the surface finishing of metallic materials due to its water-repellency. Realization of highly water-repellent surface on aluminum and its alloys provides various functionalities for real application fields. In order to realize the hydrophobic/superhydrophobic surfaces on aluminum and its alloys, various technologies have been demonstrated. Especially, traditional anodic oxidation for aluminum has been widely employed for the morphological texturing of surfaces, which is essential to enhance the hydrophobic efficiency. De-wetting superhydrophobic surface on aluminum provides various exceptional properties, such as anti-corrosion, anti-/de-icing, anti-biofouling, drag reduction, self-cleaning and liquid separation. Nevertheless, the durability and stability of superhydrophobic surfaces still remain challenges for their actual applications in engineering systems and industry. In this review, the theoretical/experimental studies and current technical limitations on the hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surface using anodic oxidation of aluminum have been summarized.

Efficiency of a fuel cell is determined by the generated water. If water is not removed sufficiently, water will be accumulated at GDL, which causes flooding. Therefore, water control is regarded as a crucial factor to sustain fuel ell performance. In this study, PTFE coating on the surface of carbon paper was carried out to establish optimum process for hydrophobic treatment of GDL. Carbon paper was immersed at different concentrations of nano-sized PTFE coating solution. Their characteristics were analyzed systematically by FE-SEM, water contact angle, cyclic voltamogam, XRD and FT-IR. The quantitative correlation between the amount of coated-PTFE on a carbon paper and concentration of coating solution was carefully investigated. It is suggested that the amount of PTFE-coating on a carbon paper can be managed by means of controling concentration of coating solution.
