Flexural strength, microstructure, hydration reaction and moisture sensitivity in macro defect-free (MDF) cement, which basically prepared of high alumina cement (HAC) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and polyvinylalcohol (PVA) as water soluble polymer were investigated. Cement composites based on HAC-PVA system were improved in flexural strength than that of HAC-HPMC system especially, the strength of specimens added to 10 wt% of polyvinylalcohol was 160 MPa. These improvements of flexural strength were attributed to not only the effect of water soluble polymer in elimination of macropores (above 100 $\mu\textrm{m}$) and cement grain bridging, but the effect of unhydrate cement as an aggregate. Moisture sensitivity and flexural strength in wet condition of MDF cement composites immersed in water at 80$^{\circ}C$ for 3 days were decreased.

Polyphenolic compounds widely occurring in the traditional medicine plants have been reported to possess strong antioxidant activity. The antioxidative substances of water soluble extract from leaves, stem bark, root bark and fruit powder of Cudrania tricuspidata were tested in three different in vitro experimental models. In oxidation models using DPPH( , ' diphenyl picrylhydrazyl) method, Fe2+ induced linoleic acid peroxidation, and autooxidation of hepatic microsomal membranes, the antioxidative activities of water soluble extract from stem bark were strong than that from leaves and root bark. Fruits of Cudrania tricuspidata contained the highest amounts of polyphenolic compounds among the parts of this plant. The changes in polyphenolic compound contents of fruit powder caused by heat treatment (20oC, 40oC, and 60oC) were also monitored. After water blanching, contents of phenolic compounds was increased slightly in the following order; 20oC(1454mg), 40oC(1487mg), and 60oC(1511mg). These results supports that water soluble extracts from Cudrania tricuspidata contain antioxidative compounds.
Water-soluble phosphate glasses containing Ag or Cu ion were prepared through melting process. Then the powdered glass samples were dissolved in D.I. water at room temperature with changing the dissolution time. In terms with the glass composition, dissolution characteristics, bactericidal effects and cytotoxicities were investigated. Dissolved amounts increased uniformly with dissolution time, and the dissolution rate was higher for ternary glass than for binary glass and with less metal oxide amount. And the dissolution rate of the glass with Ag ion was higher than that with Cu ion, and the bactericidal effect of the glass with Ag ion was also greater. Solution with more than 25 ppm of Ag was observed to have strong cytotoxicity to L929, and solutions of lower Ag concentration or with Cu seemed to have little cytotoxicity.

We evaluated the biological activities of five water extracts of tissue of the mottled anemone Urticina crassicornis. Most extracts exhibited broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity as determined by ultrasensitive radial diffusion assay (URDA) against gram-positive and -negative bacteria, including a fish pathogen, Aeromonas hydrophila, but no activity against fungi. The activity of the extracts was abolished by tryptic digestion, indicating that protein compounds were responsible for the antimicrobial activity. Furthermore, in a 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical-scavenging activity assay, only the visceral tissue extract showed activity. However, no extract had hemolytic activity against human red blood cells. Consequently, this study suggests the water-soluble extract of mottled anemone to be a promising source of proteinaceous antimicrobial compounds that can be utilized for development of novel antibiotics.
It is now widely recognized that the disposal of packaging waste is an increasing environmental concern. Recent interest in polymer waste management of packaging materials has added incentive to the research. Poly(vinyl alcohol) is a readily biodegradable water-soluble polymer. However, this polymer cannot be processed by conventional extrusion technologies because the melting point of PVA is close to its decomposition temperature. Therefore, PVA films have been mostly prepared by solvent casting from water. Applications of PVA include sizing, binders, fibers, and films for agricultural chemicals and hospital laundry bags. A better understanding of PVA films, which also play important roles in the degradation of plastics, will expand the usage of PVA. Composite films based on PVA generally exhibit better mechanical and thermal properties than pure PVA. The aim of this review article is to review types, formation, and properties of PVA films and PVA based composite films used in packaging related researches.
The influence of polyethylene glycol derivatives on heparin release from cylindrical monolithic type silicone segment devices was examined in physical saline solution. This water-soluble carrier caused the devices to absorb the water in aqueous media. The release rate of heparin from the devices was increased as molecular weight of polyethylene glycol was increased. Water soluble carrier incorporated into silitone segment devices permits controlled release of heparin that otherwise would be released extremly slowly from the polymer. Heparin released from the silicone segment containing polyethylene glycol showed the first-order kinetics. Without changing the release-pattern, the release rate of heparin could be controlled by varing molecular weight of polyethylene glycol, the water-soluble carrier and depleting polyethylene glycol on the outlayer of devices. The mechanism of release probably showed the creation of pore or microdomine through the devices secondary to the swelling.
There is now a growing concern about the possible toxicity of heavy metals in cosmetics. Heavy metals can be used as cosmetic ingredients or may be present as low level impurities in some of the raw materials. Chromium derivatives are used as pigments in cosmetics. Chromium is essential and toxic trace elements. Chromium may cause skin allergy. However, the regulations related to cosmetic products give no limit values for Chromium. Hexavalent chromium is significantly more toxic than trivalent chromium. Hexavalent chromium may present a carcinogenic risk at high concentrations. Therefore, it is important to consider oxidation state of chromium when analyze chromium. The purpose of this study is to determine the concentrations of water-soluble trivalent and hexavalent chromium in samples of makeup products, and to assess the safety of cosmetics on the basis of animal sensitization tests using guinea pig. The present study of chromium in 48 makeup products of 12 manufacturers provides a basis for assessing safety of makeup products. Water-soluble hexavalent chromium was not detected in any product. Water-soluble trivalent chromium was detected in only 9 eye shadows out of 48 makeup products, and could not be quantified 3 out of 9 eye shadows. The highest level of water-soluble trivalent chromium was about 10 mg/kg in spite of 90,000 mg/kg of total chromium. The results of animal sensitization tests show that 200 mg/kg of trivalent chromium and 5 mg/kg of hexavalent chromium have no harmful effect. No cross-reaction among these metals was found. Accordingly, the concentrations of water-soluble chromium in makeup products seemed to be safe. The overall results indicate that chromium in cosmetics probably have no significant toxicological effects. However, It is necessary to set guidelines on the maximum permissible concentration of water-soluble chromium in cosmetics.
This study was conducted for the evaluation of air-pollution using pear plant. Twenty-three sites around the Ulsan Industrial Complex Area were selected for the study. The water soluble sulfur content, photosynthetic rate and the visible injured index of pear leaves were evaluated and the results are summarized as follows: 1. Water-soluble sulfur content of pear leaves at survey sites was shown to be an average of 0.201%. The content of their leaves at polluted sites ranged from 0.220 to 0.496%. Water-soluble sulfur content of the pear leaves decreased as the distance became far from the Industrial Complex. 2. The photosynthetic rate of pear leaves decreased with an accumulation of water-soluble sulfur content. However it increased as the distance became greater within the five-kilometer radius of the pollutant. 3. More than 60% of injured rate was shown in pear plant within the five-kilometer radius of the pollutant in 1993. There were high correlations between the visible injured index items. Compared with 1988, the most severely injured sites in 1988 were Yochon-dong and Yaum-dong. But in 1993, they moved to the Yongcham-dong and Bugok-dong area. 4. Water-soluble sulfur content of pear leaves was correlated with the photosynthetic rate of pear leaves. The same tendency was shown between water-soluble sulfur and total injured index. This method using pear plant will be applied to the evaluation of air pollution.
It has been proposed that oxidative modification of LDL (oxLDL) plays a significant role in the pathogenicity of atherogenesis. We tested the hypothesis that chitin and chitosan may function as antioxidants with respect to 0.1 mg cholesterol/ml LDL incubated with 5 $\mu$ M Cu$^2$$^{+}$alone or in the P338Dl mouse macrophage system using L-ascorbic acid as a standard classical antioxidant. The degree of oxLDL formation was ascertained by the relative electrophoretic mobility (rEM) in the combination of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels, and the cytotoxicity of oxLDL was detected by macrophage viability. The oxLDL uptake and foam cell formation of macrophages were measured by Oil Red O staining. Incubation with Cu$^2$$^{+}$and macrophages increased rEM of LDL and stimulated TBARS formation. Culture of macrophages with LDL in the presence 5 $\mu$ M Cu$^2$$^{+}$induced macrophage death. In cell-free system 200 $\mu$g/ml water-soluble chitosan and chitosan-oligosaccharide blocked oxLDL formation. Water-soluble chitosan and chitosan-oligosaccharide blocked oxLDL formation near-completely relative to L-ascorbic acid, whereas water-soluble chitin and chitin-oligosaccharide had no measurable antioxidant effect. In macrophage system water-soluble chitosan and chitosan-oligosaccharide blocked oxidation of LDL with a significant increase in cell viability, and decreased TBARS in medium. As for the inhibitory effect on macrophage foam cell formation, chitosan and its oligosaccharide, but not watersoluble chitin, revealed the effectiveness. The endothelial expression of lectin-like oxLDL receptor-1 (LOX-1) was tested by Western blot analysis, and chitosan, chitosan-oligosaccharide and chitin-oligosaccharide blocked LOX-1 expression. These results indicate that water-soluble chitosan and its oligosaccharide showed the inhibitory effect on Cu$^2$$^{+}$-induced LDL oxidation of macrophages, and chitosan, chitosan-oligosaccharide and chitin-oligosaccharide had blocking effect on oxLDL receptor expression in the human umbilical vein endothelial system. Thus, water-soluble chitosan and its oligosaccharides possess anti-atherogenic potentials possibly through the inhibition of macrophage LDL oxidation or endothelial oxLDL receptor expression depending on chemical types.l types.
The aim of the present study was to elucidate the effect of the water soluble chitosans on the removal of contaminated radiostrontium (Sr-85) from the bone of mice. The remaining radioactivities in intravenously injected controls(group 1) were higher than in intraperitoneally injected controls (group 4, P<0.01). The % retention at day 5 were $57.7{\pm}1.9%,\;54.4{\pm}1.2%$, respectively. Single intravenous injection of 0.3% water soluble chitosan and continuous oral ingestion of 10% water soluble chitosan for 15 days were' ineffective on the removal of contaminated radiostrontiums. Multiple intravenous or intraperitoneal injections of water soluble chitosan effectively removed contaminated radiostrontiums(P<0.01 vs controls). In conclusion, water soluble chitosan might remove once incorporated radiostrontium from bones of mice. Further studies were needed to elucidate the mechanism of the removal.
