Multi regression analysis of water quality characteristics in lowland paddy fields

  • Drainage water in lowland paddy fields is quantitatively influenced recycle and/or repeated irrigation by irrigation facilities, i.e. pumps, check gates, small reservoirs and so on. In those drainage channels, nutrients accumulation and increasing organic matters are considered to be occurred, and water quality would be degraded not only environmental aspect but irrigation purpose. In general, Total Nitrogen (T-N) is interested water quality index in irrigation water, because high nitrogen concentration sometimes caused decreasing rice production by excess growth and fallen or degrading quality of taste, then, farmers would like to clear water less than 1mg/L of T-N concentration. In drainage channel, it is known that the nitrogen concentration change is influenced by physical, chemical and biological properties, i.e, stream or river bed condition, water temperature, other water quality index, and plant cover condition. In this study, discharge data (velocity and level) in a drainage channel was monitored by an Acoustic Doppler system and water quality was sampled at same time in 2011. So those data was analyzed by multi regression model to realize hydrological and environmental factors to influence with nitrogen concentration. The results showed the difference tendency between irrigation and non-irrigation period, and those influenced factors would be considered in water quality model developing in future.

한국 동해연안의 수질 평가 (Water Quality Assessment at Coastal Area of the East Sea of Korea)

  • 동해연안의 수질특성 및 상태를 파악하기 위하여 2004년부터 2010년까지의 국가해양환경측정망 조사결과를 이용하여 수질인자의 거동을 분석하였다. 본 연구에서는 통계적 방법을 이용한 수질인자간의 상관관계 및 주성분 분석을 통하여 해역별 수질환경 특성을 파악하였으며, OECD의 부영양화 기준과 부영양도, 그리고 유기오염도 지수의 산정으로 해역별 오염상태를 평가하였다. 수질인자간의 주성분 분석에서 동해연안은 클로로필 a와 염분이 주요인자로 설명되는 2개의 요인으로 구분되었다. 해역별로는 죽변을 경계로 남부와 중부로 분류되었으며, 동해 중부 해역에서는 죽변, 그리고 남부해역에서는 감포연안이 별도로 분류되었다. 동해연안의 영양상태는 Oligotrophic~Mesotrophic 수준으로 구분되었으며, 부영양화도는 1 이하로 평가되었다. 유기오염지수는 동해연안 전 해역에서 양호한 수질상태로서 평가되었다.

안양천에서의 생태학적 수질오염도 평가 (Assessment of Water Quality Based on Ecological Factors in Anyang River)

  • In this study, the water quality investigated during 2002s to 2004s for Anyang river and its affluent that was based on biological and chemical methods as well as ecological index of each streams. The improving of water quality and the multiplicity of specious in the most streams except for Anyang, which was due to the improving of water quality and water resource. The seasonal dry states are completely disappeared, but water quality of Anyang main stream was classified as fifth grades water with BIP 8.51~10.00 and BOD 8.16~14.4mg/l in Anyang stream overall. And alpha-mesosaprobic in upper, mid parts and polysaprobic in down parts of Anyang main stream are appeared according to Saprobien system, respectively. The water supply of treated sewage is appeared that upgrading effects of water quality in Anyang main stream and affluents of Anyang city area, but the practical effects of "Saving Anyang River" could not gained because the water quality of other branches in upstream parts than upstream measuring point of Anyang main stream, Wanggok stream Sanbon stream in Gunpo and Eeiwang cities, was not improved.

다양한 평가기법을 이용한 금강 대권역의 수질 및 목표수질기준 달성도 평가 (Review on Water Quality and Achievement of Water Quality Goal by Various Evaluation Methods in Geum River)

  • The Ministry of Environment plans to improve quality of water which is achieved over 85% in rivers and 94% in lakes of the whole country as "Good Water" until 2015. Also, the law of evaluation of water quality and water quality goal were made newly. So, the water quality has evaluated by using new law since 2007. This study evaluated whether "Good Water" and" Water Quality Goal" were achieved or not in 22 middle-sized districts and major 10 lakes of Geum river. The achievement rates of rivers decreased and the achievement rates of lakes mostly were the same for 5 years. In 2007, the achievement rates of "Good Water" were 50% in rivers and 50% in lakes. The achievement rate of "Water Quality Goal" were 59.1% in rivers and 20% in lakes. The water quality in 2007 was evaluated worse than last year in case of rivers. The evaluations of Korea-Comprehensive Water Quality Index(K-CWQI) showed that achievement rates of "Water Quality Goal" were 81.8% in rivers and 0% in lakes. The statistical correlation analysis showed that correlations between BOD and COD were meaningful at the downstream, compared to upstream, generally. In case of lakes, correlations between COD and temperature were meaningful. Also, correlations between COD and Chl-a were meaningful. The Trophic State Index ($TSI_{KO}$) showed that the half of lakes are major over eutrophic status in lakes. These analytical methods such as K-CWQI, $TSI_{KO}$, statistical correlation analysis could be additionally helpful for evaluation of water quality and provide basis data for understanding characteristics of watershed in Geum river.

식수의 수질중 미네랄성분과 음이온을 이용한 지수에 관한 연구 (Study on the Drinking Water Index with Minerals and Anions)

  • It is well known that we should take 2L of drinking water per day to maintain our health. The drinking water quality is becoming worse owing to sewage discharge and industrial wastewater. Surface water is polluted by various kinds of contaminants and ground water were known as clean and unpolluted water, but through recent many reports the ground waters are also contaminated by waste disposal and intrusion of organic and bacterial movement. This research was undertaken to make a water index of water contamination by referringcations cations and anions. NH$_{4}$, Fe, Mn, and Pb are chosen as cations and $NO_3$, Cl, and $SO_4$ ions are chosen as anions to make a index, and the following water index was made as the contamination index. (Fe+Mn+Pb)/0.7+$(NH_4+NO_3+Cl+SO_4)$/10.5<6.0 By using ton Chromatography the cations and anions are rapidly analyzed and plotting the analyzed data to the equation, we can easily get the degree of contaminations by avoiding analysis of over 37 water parameters in several days. Of course this index of water contamination is not perfect and detail one, but in case of emergent case or to know the overall trends of contamination, it is convenient to use this index. Among the tested 5 kinds of samples the ground water showed contamination index of 6.87. Authors used the already published healthy index and tasty index and differentiated their degrees in detail.

충남 예당저수지를 포함한 10개 저수지의 영양단계 및 부착규조지수를 이용한 수질평가 (Water Quality Assessment using Trophic Status Index and Attached Diatom Index in 10 Reservoirs including Ye-dang Reservoir of Chungcheongnam-do)

  • The research assessed water quality using physico-chemical factors, trophic status index and attached diatom index in 10 reservoirs located in Chungcheongnam-do from October 2007 to June 2008. The physico-chemical water quality assessments revealed that Dangjin-gun (St. 1~5), which displayed a high chemical oxygen demand (V and VI) and chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ (Eutrophic-Hypereutrophic), was more polluted than Yesan and Cheongyang-gun. The sample were also hypereutrophic [trophic status index (TSI) 74.6] and ${\beta}$-mesosaprobic [diatom assemblage index to the organic water pollution (DAIpo) 44.47]. Yesan and Cheongyang-gun. Which were mid-level in their pollution status, were eutrophic (TSI 56.9) and ${\alpha}$-oligosaprobic (DAIpo 60.11). TSI correlated strongly with the attached diatom index (of DAIpo 0.60~0.62, and trophic diatom index of 0.72~0.74). Hence, the attached diatom index can be used with the trophic status assessment of lakes using TSI, and lake trophic status index (LTSI).

부영양화 평가 방법에 따른 계절별 대청호의 수질분석 (Seasonal Water Quality Analysis in Daecheong Lake by Eutrophication Assessment Methods)

  • This study has evaluated the trophic state in Daecheong Lake by Carlson (1977) method, Aizaki (1981) method, Yang and dickman (1993) method, and Korean trophic state index method. For estimating the trophic state index from each analysis method we use water quality factors such as COD, TN, TP, Chl-a, and SD provided by the water information system and the ministry of environment. The seasonal lake trophic state results denote the mesotrophic state lake from Carlson (1977) method, Aizaki (1981) method, and Korean trophic state index method and the high relation between Carlson (1977) method and Aizaki (1981) method with the coefficient of determination $R^2$ greater than 0.9 for all the seasons. Although Korean trophic index method has relatively weak relation to other methods with the coefficient of determination $R^2$ ranging from 0.419 to 0.701, we propose that Korean trophic index method is suitable for use in domestic lakes since Korean trophic index results show the similar periodicity and tendency with other method results. Hence, Korean trophic index method incorporating domestic lake characteristics is expected to can contribute to seasonal water quality management measures in lakes.

밀양시 지하수 수질 특성과 DRASTIC 지수를 이용한 지하수 오염취약성 평가 (Evaluation of Vulnerability to Groundwater Contamination using Groundwater Quality Characteristics and DRASTIC Index in Miryang City)

  • Miryang City, the study area, has a water supply rate of 87.4%, which is 12% lower than the national water supply rate of 99.4%, but has a high dependence on groundwater due to the high ratio of farms. In agricultural areas, contamination becomes relatively more critical, requiring significant attention to the management and conservation of groundwater resources. This study aims at estimate groundwater vulnerability of Miryang City using the DRASTIC index map, Piper diagram, and water quality data to correlated with the DRASTIC index. The results from DRASTIC map were divided into five classes: very high, high, moderate, low, and very low. The areas in central and southern part of study area, which are characterize by a very high index with [Ca-Cl] and [Na-Cl] water types, covering a large alluvium with the Miryang River and Nakdonggang River. In addition, a correlation analysis between groundwater quality parameters and the DRASTIC index was carried out. Chloride, sodium, and sulfate ions showed a weak relationship with DRASTIC index, with correlation coefficient was 0.507, 0.487 and 0.344, respectively. These results suggest that aquifer media, soil media, hydraulic conductivity, and chloride ion are important factors for groundwater vulnerability.

대청호의 유입지천인 소옥천의 식물플랑크톤 군집 분석 및 수질영양단계 평가 (Phytoplankton Community and the Evaluation of Water Quality Status in So-ok Stream, the Inflowing Stream to Daechung Lake)

  • 본 연구는 2007년 10월부터 2008년 7월까지 대청호의 중요 유입지천인 소옥천에 대해 이화학적 수질, 식물플랑크톤 군집을 분석하고 수질영양단계를 평가하였다. 식물플랑크톤은 Microcystis aeruginosa와 Aulacoseira granulata 등 수화원인종의 출현빈도가 높아 잠재적으로 남조류 및 규조류에 의한 녹조현상이 연중 지속될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. 또한 Oscillatoria limasa를 포함한 10분류군의 오염수역 지표종이 출현하였다. TSI (Trophic Status Index)와 LTSI (Lake Trophic Status Index)에 의한 수질영양단계 평가 결과, TSI는 중부영양~부영양화단계, LTSI는 중부영양단계~과영양단계로 평가되었다.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess biological river water quality by using epilithic diatoms at 40 selected sites in Geum, Youngsan, and Seomjin River systems. The sampling and analyses were performed during three seasons including January, April and June in 2005. Various water quality parameters also were analyzed. We attempted to classify the water quality condition by epilithic diatom indices (DAIpo and TDI) with the results of corresponding analyses of various chemical water quality parameters. A five class system was delivered to describe the water quality condition ranged from "very good" to "very poor." We also proposed a way of classifying water quality condition by combining two diatom indices of DAIpo and TDI. Our results showed that biomass of epilithic diatoms varied not only seasonally but spatially; it was not likely that winter diatoms represent average water quality condition, due to high concentration of nutrients. Water quality status assessed by diatom indices was generally worse than that assessed by BOD, indicating that BOD standard likely underestimates the biological condition of the water body. Importantly, nutrient-based diatom index (TDI) generally overestimated organic matter-based index (DAIpo) at most study sites, indicating that diatoms in studied rivers were likely more affected by nutrients than organic matter. Thus, management strategy to improve river water quality in Korea is suggested to emphasize more on the nutrients than organic matters.
