  • The aim of this study was to investigate the heavy metal removal and biomass productivity in the Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) using eggshell and microalgae. The experiment was operated 6 days in the eggshell and microalgae hybrid system, and using eggshell powder and microalgae as Chlorella vulgaris. The obtained result indicated that the biomass productivity of 2.82 g/L/d from 1.12 g/L initial concentration in 6 days was reached with light transmittance of 97% at a 305 mm depth in the optical panel photobioreactor (OPPBR). The total removal efficiency of Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn and Cd was found to be 98.92%, 99.91%, 98.78%, 88.99% and 98.00% in the AMD using eggshell and Chlorella vulgaris hybrid system, respectively. Additionally, there were significant relationships between biomass and concentration of each heavy metal ($R^2$ = 0.8771, 0.8643, 0.8669, 0.9134 and 0.6277 for Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn and Cd). These results indicated that the eggshell and microalgae hybrid system was highly effective for heavy metal removal when compared to the conventional biological process in the AMD. Therefore, the eggshell and microalgae hybrid system was effective for heavy metal removal and biomass productivity and can be applied to treat AMD in treatment plant.

  • With the commercialization and full-timeization of the livestock industry, civil complaints continue to increase, and the livestock industry is facing a crisis due to social problems such as odor caused by livestock manure, soil pollution, water pollution, and environmental pollution. In order to increase productivity in livestock farms, the amount of livestock manure generated is increasing due to excessive use of protein feed and high-density breeding environment, and complaints such as odor and water pollution due to management problems are increasing rapidly. Livestock odor has emerged as a serious social problem, and due to growing complaints, conflicts between the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of Environment are even causing the livestock industry to lower its status. There is an urgent need for solutions to identify problems in the livestock industry and improve policies. This study aims to develop a " Abelmoschus Manihot Jinhuakui " brand that can improve the intestinal environment of livestock, reduce odors caused by livestock excrement, and improve the productivity of livestock farms in order to improve the increasingly serious odor problem in livestock sites. For Jeju livestock farms, which place more importance on the environment by securing tourists, eco-friendly feed additives were applied to the experiment, the results were derived, and the focus was on solving fundamental problems of odor generation through the development and packaging of feed additive brands. We aim to fundamentally solve the odor problem of domestic livestock farms, secure eco-friendly livestock farms, and contribute to reducing livestock odors and increasing productivity through research results that reduce ammonia levels in each livestock farm.

  • Field observations and culture experiments have been carried out during the rainy season (on the 6th, 8th and 27th July 2009) to examine changes in the primary productivity and associated plant pigments in the estuary of the Seom-jin River. Primary productivity was determined at four sampling stations along the salinity gradient. On 6th July (before heavy rain) primary productivity ranged from 689~1,169 mgC $m^{-2}$ $d^{-1}$. On the 8th, just after more than 216.5 mm of precipitation, euphotic layers at all stations were reduced to very shallow water because of the high concentration of suspended solids in the water. This resulted in dramatically decreased primary productivity down to as low as 12~32 mg C $m^{-2}$ $d^{-1}$. However, after the rain, primary productivity on the 27th ranged from 266~999 mgC $m^{-2}$ $d^{-1}$, demonstrating a fast recovery in the upper stream water to similar productivity levels to those before the rainy season. Concentration of fucoxanthin in the water was highest on the 6th July. Before the rain, concentration of the zeaxanthin, increased as the salinity decreased. Immediately after the heavy rain, the Chl b (Chlorophytes) concentration was higher at all sites than before the rainy season. The concentration of fucoxanthin decreased after the heavy rain. At the downstream site, peridinin (Dinoflagellates) were found. During the rainy season, the diatoms contributed to the primary productivity at all sites. However, after the rainy season, Chl b (Chlorophytes) and Peridinin (Dinoflagellates) increased, demonstrating the enhanced contribution of those species in addition to diatoms.

  • The effects of water temperature, salinity, water column nutrient contents, and phytoplankton primary productivity on pigment composition and concentration, as well as primary productivity of Pyropia yezoensis Ueda purple lavers were studied at the primary cultivation areas in the Manho (Jindo-Haenam) region on the southwestern coast of Korea in March 2014. The water temperature was $9.1{\sim}9.6^{\circ}C$, salinity was 32.5~33.1, and transparency was 0.7~1.5 m. The shallow euphotic depth resulted from the high turbidity. Water column dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), and silicate concentrations were $3.59{\sim}5.73{\mu}M$, $0.16{\sim}0.41{\mu}M$, and $12.41{\sim}13.94{\mu}M$, respectively. Chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration was $0.51{\sim}1.25{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$. Nanoplankton ($0.7{\sim}20{\mu}m$ size class) accounted for 58% of the total Chl a concentration. Fucoxanthin was the dominant photosynthetic pigment at all sites. Microplankton ($20{\sim}200{\mu}m$ size class) accounted for 64% of the total fucoxanthin concentration. The primary productivity of phytoplankton was $57.72{\pm}4.67(51.05{\sim}66.71)mg\;C\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$. The nanoplankton ($0.7{\sim}20{\mu}m$ size class) accounted for 77% of the total phytoplankton primary productivity. The calculated phytoplankton primary productivity was $11,337kg\;C\;d^{-1}$. The primary productivity of Pyropia blades was $1,926{\pm}192(1,102{\sim}2,597)mg\;C\:m^{-2}d^{-1}$, i.e., calculated as $39,295kg\;C\;d^{-1}$. The total primary productivity of phytoplankton and Pyropia blades was $50,632kg\;C\;d^{-1}$. The primary productivity of Pyropia blades was 3.5 times greater than that of phytoplankton in the Manho region on the southwestern coast of Korea.

  • Subsurface drainage improves crop productivity in poorly drained soils but may also substantially contribute impairment of surface water quality due to excess leaching losses of nutrients like Nitrate-Nitrogen (NO3-N). This research presents preliminary findings from a 3-years tile depth and spacing study in Illinois state that includes three drain spacings implemented in 2 plots. We found that the plot with the narrower subsurface drainage (Case 1) exported more drainage water compared to the plot with the narrower subsurface drainage system (Case 2). The total drainage water from Case 1 plot showed 57% more compared to Case 2 plot. Whereas we observed that the plot with narrower drain spacing (Case 1) exported only 9% more NO3-N leaching losses compared to the wider plot (Case 2). The average corn yield was observed higher in plot Case 1 compared to Case 2. Especially, we observed about 7% higher corn yield in plot Case 1 compared to Case 2 plot in the relatively dried year (2022). The preliminary findings for this study suggest that subsurface drainage systems can be optimized to reduce nutrient losses while improving the crop productivity.

  • In order to study the formation and structure of tidal fronts and their influence on the distribution and productivity of phytoplankton in the outer of Kyonggi Bay, analyses on the water temperature data from 1977 to 1986 and 3 surveys from 1981 to 1986 were carried out in the mid0eastern coast of the Yellow Sea. Temperature gradients and dissolved oxygen gradients were implied that the tidal fronts are formed at the outer of the Kyonggi Bay along the western side of Tae-An peninsula from spring to summer. the formations of tidal fronts in this study area influence the distribution of phytoplankton and primary productivity. The standing stocks, chlorophyll concentrations and primary productivity of phytoplankton in the frontal area are higher than those of the outer stratified waters and the inner coastal mixed waters. These high production in the frontal area are resulted from good light condition and rich nutrient within the water columns. With a boundary of frontal area, there are relatively high chlorophyll concentrations and primary productivity in the coastal mixed waters while there are low chlorophyll concentrations and relatively high primary productivity in the stratified waters. These relatively high primary productivity in the outer area are resulted from the high potential production by nanoplankton in the surface layer and the high production of tychopelagic diatoms under the thermocline with the deep transparency.

  • A Nuluk, a Korean traditional Koji for brewing, was made with wheat flour and Aspergillus oryzae L2 which had a good aroma and strong abilities In producing saccharogenic and dextrogenic enzymes. The cultural conditions for the production of saccharogenic and proteolytic enzymes were tested. The productivity of dextrogenic enzyme was improved when Nuluk was made with unsteamed wheat flour as compared with steamed one, but that of proteolytic enzyme was reduced. The addition of water containing 0.5% hydrochloric acid was unfavorable for the production of those two enzymes. The optimum ratio of water added to wheat flour for the production of those two enzymes was 28$^{\circ}C$ on the basis of wheat flour, The productivity of saccharogenic enzyme was enhanced when the Nuluk was molded after 20 hours of precultivation, but that of proteolytic enzyme was reduced as compared with no molding. The optimum temperatures for the production of saccharogenic enzyme and proteolytic enzyme were 36$^{\circ}C$ and 28$^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • Cylinder machine usually gives more fiber orientation than fourdrinier and has limitation in machine speed because of fiber wash-off caused by centrifugal force when machine speed increases. This study aimed for the improvement of paper formation and productivity by setting an apron in vat inlet and by adjusting mould water head. Improvement of formation and increase of machine speed were achieved, which ultimately improve productivity. Installing an apron successfully decreased fiber wash-off. Fiber orientation and two-sideness of ash distribution became less severe. The proper adjustment of water head inside the cylinder mould proved to be an important factor not only in paper formation but also in decreasing paper two-sideness.

  • The medium compositions of Alcaligenes eutrophus were optimized for increasing PHB productivity. It is very important to optimize the concentrations of inorganic salts and trace eleme- nts as well as carbon and nitrogen sources to maximize cell growth rate and productivity. The fed-batch culture of Alcaligenes eutrophus by dual feeding of ammonia water and glucose under optimized initial medium concentrations was carried out. Glucose was fed manually according to glucose consumption rate and ammonia water by pH-stat. The final cell concentrations and PHB content in 30 hours were 122 g/l and 65% of dry cell weight(yielding 79 g of PHB/l), respectively and 2.64 g/l/hr of PHB production rate was obtained.
