Algal growth potentials were probed by algal growth rates, maximal PSII quantum yields and ATP amount as well as dry weights of algae to evaluate the water fertility due to the algal growth in the stream (CT) and stagnant watershed (WW). Oscillatoria agardhii (CY) and Coelastrum reticulatum (CH) were cultured in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) starvation media (CH-10 medium) and re-inoculated in CT and WW for 7 days. Cell division rates of CY were the highest (k = 7.5) in WW after N starvation, while those of CH were the hight (k = 2.97) in WW after P starvation. The growth of CY was limited by P, while that of CH was by N. Conversely, maximal PSII quantum yields of CH were generally higher than those of CY in CT and WW according to culture time. CY was much more sensibly adapted than CH according to the variations of nutrient amounts in WW. The water fertility was much higher in WW than in CT. The potential assessment tool for water fertility will be able to compensate for the limit of physio-chemical analyses and to be applied as a monitoring system to forecast red-tide.
This paper presents a comparison of potential and viscous computational codes for the water entry problem. A po-tential code was developed which adopted the boundary element method to solve the problem. A nonlinear free surface boundary condition was integrated to find new locations of free surface. The dynamic boundary condition was simplified by taking constant potential values for every time steps. The simplified dynamic boundary condition was applied in the new position of the free surface not at the mean level, which is the usual practice for linearized theory. The commercial code FLUENT was used to solve the water entry problem from the viscosity point of view. The movement of the air-liquid interface is traced by distribution of the volume fraction of water in a computational cell. The pressure coefficients were compared with each other, while experimental results published by other researchers were also examined. The characteristics of each method were discussed to clarify merits and limitations when they were applied to the water entry problems.
Factors affecting corrosion of stainless steels such as pH, oxidation and redox potential (ORP), soil resistivity, water content of soil, chloride ion concentration, bacteria activity, and corrosion potential have been investigated using soil analysis, bacterial analysis, surfacial analysis, and analysis of corrosion potentials of several stainless steels buried in 8 sites of Seoul metropolitan for one year. Corrosion potential was affected by occurrance of corrosion as well as bacteria activity but the behavior of corrosion potential with time is different depending on occurrance of corrosion and bacteria activity. The main factor affecting corrosion of stainless steels in soil is level of chloride ion concentration which is also a main factor affecting corrosion of stainless steels in chloride containing drinkable water. Furthermore, guideline of stainless steels in drinkable water is concluded to be applicable to that in soil by the results from surfacial analysis.

N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is a typical nitrogen disinfection by-product, which has posed a potential threat to human health during drinking water disinfection. Because of the well-known effects of mutagenesis, carcinogenesis and teratogenesis, the high detection rate in water engineering systems (such as coagulation, membrane filtration and biological systems), and difficulty to remove, it has received wide concern in the field of water engineering systems. The NDMA is a low molecular weight hydrophilic organic substance, which is difficult to remove. Also, the mechanism for NDMA formation is also recognized to be complex, and many steps still needed to be further evaluated. Therefore, the mechanistic knowledge on NDMA formation potential and their removal processes is of particularly interest. Few papers summarize the occurrence and control of NDMA in water engineering systems. It is for this reason that the content of this paper is particularly important for us to understand and control the amount of NDMA thus reducing the threat of disinfection by-products to drinking water. Four parts including the mechanisms for the NDMA formation potential, the factors affecting the NDMA formation potential, the technologies for removal of NDMA are summarized. Finally, some definite suggestions are given.

In this study, corrosion behavior of a SA178-A alloy used in the boiler tube of a district heating system was investigated in different environments where it was exposed to pure water, district heating (DH) water, and filtered district heating (FDH) water. After the corrosion test, the surface morphology was examined for observation of the number of pitting sites and pitting area fraction, using a scanning electron microscope. The DH water and FDH water conditions resulted in a lower corrosion potential and pitting potential, and revealed a significantly higher corrosion rate than the pure water condition. The pitting sites in the DH water (pH 9.6) were approximately eighteen times larger than those in the pure water (pH 9.6). Compared to the DH water, the corrosion potential became more noble in the FDH water condition, where iron ions were reduced through filtration. However, the corrosion rate increased in the FDH water due to an increased concentration of chloride ions, which deteriorated the stability of passive film.
This experiment was carried out to know the effects of soil water potential of cutting bed and relative humidity on the rooting of stem cutting in the field plots. The results obtained were as follows; 1. The most number of the rooted cutting was found from 70 to 80% of relative humidity in Spring and from 90 to 100% in Summer respectively. 2. It was found that the number of rooted cutting was the least in the range of 0 to-0.006 bar of soil water potential of cutting bed in the case of Spring cutting, whereas in Summer the number of the rooted cutting was the most one in the range of -0.049 to -0.124 bar of soil water potential of cutting bed. 3. High signification was recognized between the relative humidity and the number of the rooted cutting only in the Spring cutting, but that of soil water potential and the number of the rooted cutting was found to be significant in every season.
Drought resistance and salt resistance of seedlings were compared with the polyethylene glycol(P.E.G) and NaCl solutions of the same osmotic potential($\Psi_\pi$=-10 bar). Plant height, seedling dry weight, chlorophyll content and leaf water potential decreased while the free proline content increased more in the P.E.G. than in the NaCl solution. Free amino acids increased 2.6 times in the P.E.G. solution and 3.6 times in the NaCl solution more than in the untreated(Hoagland's solution). Free proline occupied 66% and 61% of the content of total amino acids under water stress and salt stress, respectively. Besides free proline, phenylalanine in the P.E.G. solution and phenylalanine, alanine and asparagine in the NaCl solution increased distinctly. In short, it was shown that water and salt stress responses in seedling stage were relatively similar.
The experiment which imposed the water stress to tobacco(Nicotiana tabacum L.) plant was carried at the late of maximum growth period. In order to know the influence of drought stress on the growth and developmemt of tobacco leaves of different position and to elucidate the physiological response of plant to various soil water content, stomatal conductance, and leaf water potential were measured. The drought stress at the maximum growth period negatively affected to the overall growth characteristics of shoot. The response of the growth was small at the middle and the lower leaves, and great at the upper leaves. The relative water content of upper, middle, and lower leaves at the fifth day after treatment were 74, 64, and 59%, respectively, as soil water content was reduced by 4.3%. This suggested that the wilting point of tobacco leaf was about 75%. The leaf water potential was -0.58 MPa in control and dropped to -1.20 MPa at the fifth day after treatment. This indicated that wilting of leaf may occur at the condition in which the difference of water potential between treatment and control, well watered, was greater than about 20%. Stomatal conductance at the fifth day after treatment dropped from 12 mol /$\textrm{m}^2 sec^{-1}$ to 0.8 mol /$\textrm{m}^2 sec^{-1}$ in the middle and the upper leaves. Stomatal conductance of lower leaves already matured were not affected highly by drought stress at the maximum growth period, but maturing leaves, middle and upper leaves, were highly affected by limitation of soil water.
Effect of water potential of culture solution on photosynthesis, transpiration and water uptake was investigated using polyethylene glycol 6000. 1. Even at -0.5 bar of culture solution phothosynthesis was decreased by 20% within 1 hour. Plant in control showed 3.26% loss of initial water for 13 hours suggesting very sensitive in water uptake. 2. Relation between water potential of culture solution (${\psi}$) and water uptake amount (W) 2-year root was ${\psi}=-2.890/e^{2.796W}$ indicating that permanent wilting point will be greater than -2.89 bar. 3. Transpiration considerably decreased with the decrease of water potential and thus by 23.9% at -0.5 bar after 4 hours. 4. From the above results ginseng plant appears to have high root water potential at permanent wilting point and thus very week to water stress due to drought or high salt content in soils.
