  • A Grid-based distributed evaporation prediction model which calculates temporal and spatial evaporation with a heat balance method was developed. And, the model was considered as the integration with distributed hydrological model in near future. 'This model was programmed by fortran language and used ASCII formatted map data of DEM (Digital Elevation Model) and land cover map extracted by remote sensing data. Also, temporal variations and spatial distributions of evaporation are presented by using GIS. To verify the applicability of the model, it was applied to the Shonai river basin ($532km^2$) which has sufficient meteorological and hydrological data, Japan. The result shows that the estimated mean annual evaporation was 825.4mm, and this value is estimated as suitable things in considering rainfall and discharge data in study area.

  • In this study, thin film evaporation of water on low-fin tubes were experimentally investigated. Five low-fin tubes with different fin spacing and fin height were tested. Test range covered 0.146kg/ms $\leq$$\Gamma$$\leq$0.219kg/ms and 10㎾/$\m^2$$\leq$q $\leq$70㎾/$\m^2$. Saturation temperature was loot. Compared with the plain tube, low fin tubes enhanced the water film evaporation from 60% to 100%. Tubes with fin spacing smaller than 2mm and fin height higher than 1mm performed better than tubes with other fin configuration. However, when fin spacing was too small at high film flow or fin height was too high at low film flow, the performance decreased. The heat transfer coefficient slightly increased as the flow rate increased. Correlations are developed based on present data.

  • The evaporation cooling phenomenon of a droplet containing a surfactant on a heated surface has been studied experimentally. The two kinds of heater modules made of brass and Teflon$^{TM}$ were tested to investigate the cooling characteristics of droplet. Solutions of water containing Sodium Lauryl Sulfate(0 ppm, 100 ppm, 1000 ppm) were tested in the experiments. The results showed that the contact angle decrease as the concentration of surfactant increases. The tendency did not very with different heated solid materials. As initial temperature of the heated surface becomes high, time averaged heat flux increases and evaporation time decreases with the denser concentration of surfactant. Therefore, water with denser concentration of surfactant could be effective to cool flammable materials. However, the effect of surfactant becomes low as the material temperature is higher than the boiling temperature of water.

  • The aim of this research was to compare and analyze the children's ideas on evaporation and condensation between pre- and post-intervention. Forty-eight children from six elementary schools in Seoul and Kyung Ki provinces were sampled by stratified random sampling. A set of structured activities was then provided which allow children to explore evaporation and condensation phenomena. All of these activities had a preliminary phase which required the child to predict or speculate on evaporation and condensation using their existing knowledge. These structured activities on evaporation and condensation were reviewed by three professors and eigth primary school teachers. Their comments were used to revise the original contents of the structured activities. The data analysed were gathered by the questionaire and the interview. Pre- and post-intervention data related to evaporation and condensation were collected by the same teacher, and analysed into the same category scheme. Data coding was carried out several times by the researcher to ensure reliablity. Data collected were then classified and analyzed according to the types of children's ideas. The findings of this study were as follows: Results of this study showed that the the vocabulary used to describe the evaporation phenomena varied according to the context, and the scientific term "evaporated" was more frequently used by the older children after post-intervention. But everyday terms such as"dried up","disappered", "gone up" were also used by children as much as the level of pre-intervention. Scientific conception on the location of evaporated water, the factor of evaporation, the ideas about getting the water back and assumption about the physical state of the missing water has been increased for the most of the children after intervention. It was found that the intervention using was effective SPACE strategies regardless of the grade level of the children.

  • The objective of the present study is to predict the characteristics of heat and mass transfer around an evaporative condenser. Numerical calculations have been performed using multi-zone method to investigate heat transfer rate and evaporation rate with the variation of inlet condition(velocity, relative humidity and temperature) of the moist air, the flow rate of the cooling water and the shape of the condenser tube. From the results it is found that the profile of heat flux is the same as that of evaporation rate since heat transfer along the gas-liquid interface is dominated by the transport of latent heat in association with the vaporization(evaporation) of the liquid film. The evaporation rate and heat transfer rate is increased as mass flow rate increases or relative humidity and temperature decrease respectively. But the flow rate of the cooling water hardly affect the evaporation rate and heat flux along the gas-liquid interface. The elliptic tube which the ratio of semi-minor axis to semi-major axis is 0.8 is more effective than the circular tube because the pressure drop is decreased. But the evaporation rate and heat flux shown independency on the tube shape.

  • Evaporation from surface water bodies is influenced by a number of meteorological parameters. The rate of evaporation is primarily controlled by incoming solar radiation, air and water temperature and wind speed and relative humidity. In the present study, influence of weekly meteorological variables such as air temperature, relative humidity, bright sunshine hours, wind speed, wind velocity, rainfall on rate of evaporation has been examined using 35 years(1971-2005) of meteorological data. Statistical analysis was carried out employing linear regression models. The developed regression models were tested for goodness of fit, multicollinearity along with normality test and constant variance test. These regression models were subsequently validated using the observed and predicted parameter estimates with the meteorological data of the year 2005. Further these models were checked with time order sequence of residual plots to identify the trend of the scatter plot and then new standardized regression models were developed using standardized equations. The highest significant positive correlation was observed between pan evaporation and maximum air temperature. Mean air temperature and wind velocity have highly significant influence on pan evaporation whereas minimum air temperature, relative humidity and wind direction have no such significant influence.

  • Removing residual water in a fuel cell is a critical operational process for managing its performance and controlling its lifetime. Understanding the mechanism of water transport in fuel cells is essential for the design of the water removal process. In this study, an experimental method for measuring the water evaporation rate through a gas diffusion layer, which is a porous medium, under steady-state conditions was developed. Experimental bench tests were conducted to apply the developed method. Then, the effects of various parameters of the drying gas and the gas diffusion layer were experimentally measured. The water evaporation rate increased as the humidity of the drying gas decreased and the flow rate of the drying gas increased. In addition, a thinner gas diffusion layer yielded a higher water evaporation rate.

  • In order to discuss the differences among the SMP(Surface Moisture Availability Parameter), by previous researchers on the basis of their own theoretical and empirical background, we assessed the SMP according to the soil types and volumetric soil water contents. The results are as follows. There are differences among all the five SMAPs. There's a tendency that the larger grain size, the higher value of parameters. And they divided into two groups for their value: one group has parameters with exponential function and the other with cosine and linear function. The maximum difference between the two groups appears when the volumetric soil water contents are 0.07m3m-3 for sand, 0.l1m3m-3 for loam, 0.12 for clay, and 0.13m3m-3 for silt loam. So, these differences must be considered when we estimate the surface evaporation rate. From field data, the paddy field soil around Junam reservoir is classified as a silt has high wetness, 0.56. So, the parameter obtained from the field measurement is much higher than that of Clapp and Hornberger(1978)'s Table. This study treated the SMP for a certain point of time in winter season. But if we measured the soil water contents continuously, we could obtain better time-dependent parameter. Key words : SMAP(Surface Moisture Availability Parameter), Paddy field, Volumetric soil water content, Evaporation, Capillary potential.

  • This paper is concerned with the development of a new method for making, separating ice and storage floated ice by installing an evaporation plate at under-water within a storage tank. In a conventional harvest-type ice storage system, a tank saves ice by separating an ice from an installed evaporation plate, which is located above an ice storage tank as an ice storage system. Developed new harvest-type method shows good heat transfer efficiency than a convectional method. It is because the evaporation panel is directly contacted with water in a storage tank. Also, at a conventional system a circulating pump, a circulating water distributor and a piping are installed, however these components are not necessary in a new method. In this study ice storage systems are experimentally investigated to study the charge and discharge of thermal energy. The results show the applicable possibility and performance enhancement of a new type.

  • This study investigated high school student and chemistry teacher perceptions on the effect of water vapor in the air on evaporation and boiling of water by a questionnaire. In science textbooks evaporation and the boiling of water are related to the vaporization concept, boiling is related to vapor pressure and air pressure, and vapor pressure is related to the vapor concept in the air. High school student and chemistry teacher perceptions on these linkages were compared. Science textbooks were also analyzed for reasons behind these diverse perceptions. Results revealed that a majority of students conceptualized that vapor in the air was related to evaporation and boiling, but were unable to distinguish the evaporation phenomena at the macroscopic level and the evaporation of water molecules at the microscopic level. They also thought that vapor in the air affected vapor pressure and boiling. Although the percentage of teacher scientific conception was higher, a great number of teachers had diverse perceptions on evaporation and boiling just as students had. Common explanations of evaporation and boiling phenomena in science textbooks were at the macroscopic level. Moreover, there were few connections of concepts even if the explanations were at the microscopic level.
