Flow carrying capacity of water distribution systems is getting reduced by deterioration of pipes in the systems. The objective of this paper is to present a managerial decision-making model for the rehabilitation of water distribution systems with a mininum cost. The decisions made by the model also satisfy the requirements for discharge and pressure at demanding nodes in the systems. Replacement cost, pipe break repair cost, and pumping cost are considered in the economic evaluation of the decision along with the break rate and the interest rate to determine the optimal replacement time for each pipe. Then, the hydraulic integrity of the water distribution system is checked for the decision by a pipe network simulator, KYPIPE, if discharge and pressure requirements are satisfied. In case the system does not satisfy the hydraulic requirements, the decision made for the optimal replacement time is revised until the requirments are satisfied. The model is well applied to an existing water distribution system, the Seoul Metropolitan Water Supply System (1st Phase). The results show that the decisions for the replacement time determined by the economic analysis are accepted as optimal and hydraulic integrity of the system is in good condition.
In this paper a methodology is developed to prioritize replacement of water distribution pipes according to the economical efficiency of replacement and assess the long-term effects of water main replacement policies on water distribution systems. The methodology is implemented with MATLAB to develop a computer algorithm which is used to apply the methodology to a case study water distribution system. A pipe break prediction model is used to estimate future costs of pipe repair and replacement, and the economically optimal replacement time of a pipe is estimated by obtaining the time at which the present worth of the total costs of repair and replacement is minimum. The equation for estimating the present worth of the total cost is modified to reflect the fact that a pipe can be replaced in between of failure events. The results of the analyses show that about 9.5% of the pipes in the case study system is required to be replaced within the planning horizon. Analyses of the yearly pipe replacement requirements for the case study system are provided along with the compositions of the replacement. The effects of water main replacement policies, for which yearly replacement length scenario and yearly replacement budget scenario are used, during a planning horizon are simulated in terms of the predicted number of pipe failures and the saved repair costs.

It has been widely accepted that the pressure management of water distribution systems using pressure reducing valves(PRVs) would be an effective method for controlling leakages. A pressure reducing valve (PRV) regulates outlet pressure regardless of fluctuating flow and varying inlet pressure, thereby reducing leakage and mitigating the stress on the water distribution system. However, the operation of a PRV is vulnerable to its mechanical condition and hydraulic operability. In this research, the effect of PRVs installed in water distribution system are evaluated in terms of hydraulic pressure reduction and mechanical performance by analyzing measured pressure data with statistical approach. A statistical approach using the moving average filter and frequency analysis based on fourier transform is presented to detect abnormally operated PRVs that have been densely installed in water distribution system. The result shows that the proposed approach can be a good performance evaluation method by simply measuring pressures for the PRVs.
THM models have been developed in several researchers in order to better understand and manage the presence of THM in water distribution system. Several developed models were demonstrated in this study for estimating THM concentrations in target water distribution system. In order to investigate the performance of developed THM models, lab and field test were investigated. Predicted THM concentrations by all kind of models were showed good correlation with observed values. When the developed models were compared with lab and field test, the Rodriguez model during tested models was most predictive than the other models.
In this study, Back Tracing Calculation Method was developed to determine the leakage location and leakage amount. Previously developed determination method of monitoring location and newly developed Back Tracing Calculation Method were applied to the sample pipe network and real size pilot plant. After leakage was assumed in the pilot plant, leakage location and leakage amount could be traced by Back Tracing Calculation Method. From the results, it was found that Back Tracing Calculation Method can be applied for the leakage detection in water distribution system. Furthermore, this method can be applied for the pressure management or leakage detection as a pressure control method in water distribution system.
The Korea has high population density, so the precipitation per capita is only one tenth to world average. The water resource in Korea is insufficient. But the leakage in the water distribution system is about 25%, and it is lower than other countries where water utilities are managed well. The pipelines' management also is getting worse because the leakage in the pipelines lower the ground density surrounding pipes. So, managing the leakage in the water distribution system is very important in the view of increasing the water resources and doing the efficient management of the pipeline system. Accordingly this study aimed to conduct a cause-analysis with scientific approaches considering key local factor related to water loss of distribution system and derive better performance indicators which are able to evaluate the real state of water loss management reasonably. Also this research aimed to develop a methodology capable of judging condition of infrastructure of water distribution system.
In this study, the optimum pump operation technique is suggested to decrease the damage rate of water distribution system. Pump operation system was developed to achieve the effective pump operation. Pressure sensors which can communicate with pumps are installed at the end of water distribution system. Pump operation system can control the pressure of water pump according to data sent from the pressure sensors. Therefore, water distribution system can reduce the pressure and maintain enough pressure which can supply the demand of water users. For proving effectiveness of new system, reliability model was introduced to compare the results of damage rates between the maintaining high pressure and selective pressure in water pump. Unsteady analysis was conducted with several scenarios. And the results were used to calculate the probability of pipe breakage. From the results, it was found that new pump operation system can reduce the energy usage and probability of pipe breakage by applying to pumps.
Although it produces well-treated water in water treatment plant, water quality at the tap can be changed depending on the state of pipes. It is because water quality deteriorates as plant water passes through pipeline networks. Therefore, the improvement of not only water treatment technology but also O & M of water pipelines is required to supply good water to consumers. The purpose of the study was to obtain the basic data of control technology for water quality in pipes through investigating water quality in distribution system. We selected 11 sampling sites and investigated water quality from plant to endpoint of distribution system. we also simulated decreasing tendency of free chlorine through pipeline network. As the result of water quality test, all parameters were below allowable levels, but some parameters had the possibility of being over levels. So there must be more work to set up proper countermeasure for violable parameters.
This study analyzed agricultural water distribution systems for the utilization of water demand-oriented water supply systems. Three major TM/TC(telemeter/telecontrol) districts of agricultural water management were selected for analyzing the characteristics of the water distribution systems. In addition, the characteristics of the water supply systems for general water supply zones based on irrigation facilities were also investigated, along with the case of special water management during the drought season. As a result, high annual and monthly variations were observed for the water supply facilities, including the reservoirs and pumping stations. In particular, these variations were more obvious during the drought season, depending on the type of facility. The operations of the pumping stations and weirs were more sensitive to the stream levels than the reservoirs, and the smaller reservoirs were influenced more than the larger reservoirs. Therefore, a water-demand-oriented water supply system should consider the existing general practices of water management in the agricultural sector, and focus on achieving a laborsaving system rather than water conservation in the case of reservoirs. Equal water distribution from the start to the end point of irrigation channels could be an effective solution for managing pumping stations.
Haloacetic acids (HAAs) concentrations have been observed to decreased at drinking water distribution system extremities. This decrease is associated with microbiological degradation by pipe wall biofilm. The objective of this study was to evaluate HAAs degradation in a drinking water system in the presence of a biofilm and to identify the factors that influence this degradation. Degradation of monochloroacetic acid (MCAA), dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) was observed in a simulated distribution system. The results obtained showed that different parameters came into play simultaneously in the degradation of HAAs, including retention time, water temperature, biomass, and composition of organic matter. Seasonal variations had a major effect on HAAs degradation and biomass quantity (ATP concentration) was lower by 25% in the winter compared with the summer.
