  • Purpose: The present study was conducted to investigate whether certain repeated physical and/or chemical stimuli added on ophthalmic lenses might induce any changes of the functions of lens coatings. Methods: The changes in lens surface, light transmittance, foggy duration, durability of ophthalmic lenses were determined after the application of tearing-off with tape, rubbing with acetone, soaking in acetone or distilled water of ophthalmic lens (CR-39 material) as physical and/or chemical stimuli. Results: The change of ophthalmic lens surface was detected after soaking in acetone for longer than 30 minutes by observing the lens surface to figure out the functional change of hard coating. The ophthalmic lens soaked in distilled water for 180 minutes showed little functional change of anti-reflection coating as 1% by measuring light transmittance of lens. However, the function of anti-reflection coating was almost disappeared after the ophthalmic lens was soaked in acetone for 60 minutes. The foggy duration of ophthalmic lens soaked in acetone was increased by estimating foggy duration of lens. The lens coating was shown to be defected when the pre-damaged ophthalmic lenses were torn off with tape, rubbed with acetone and soaked in distilled water or acetone by observing pre-damaged lens surface to evaluate its durability. Conclusions: The careful management during ophthalmic lens dispensing or usual eyeglass wearing is needed since the change in ophthalmic lens coatings was shown by repeated physical and/or chemical stimuli.

  • Tungsten oxide-modified TiO2 thin films were formed on a glass substrate by sol-gel and dip coating processes using acetyl acetone as a chelating agent. The hydrophilic properties of the thin films were investigated with illumination of UV light. The dependence of water contact angle on material composition and morphology of the film is established with SEM image and AFM profile. The surface morphology was controlled with the change of precursor concentration. 0.01 M of tungsten oxide-modified Ti$O_2$ have shown the highest hydrophilicity after UV-irradiation. The effect of composition on photoinduced hydrophilicity of the W$O_3$-Ti$O_2$ films was also investigated. The films were characterized by XRD, SEM, AFM and XPS.

  • This study deals with the analysis of color-difference and physical property of anti-corrosion coatings using at inside of concrete tank for drinking water. Because anti-corrosion coatings are effected by chemical attack, color and physical property are changed. So in this study when epoxy resin coatings of 3 types were received chemical attack by Cl- and NaOH, we present the co-relationship between color-difference and bond strength. For this study, we used the colorimetry, which can measure the degree of color difference on surface of materials. As the results, in case of Cl-, color change is appeared, bond strength also is decreased. From this experiment, we could know that color change due to chemical aging has the deep relationship with physical performance(bond strength) materials. further researches are needed.

  • Chemical grouting method is mainly used for construction of dams and reservoirs, stabilization and reinforcement of slopes, reinforcement of soft grounds such as embankments, dredging and landfills, the order of earthquake response method, and the reinforcement of structures. Recently, it is widely applied in construction sites such as highways, airfields, high-speed railways, subsea facilities, port construction works, tunnels, and subway works. As such, the demand for grouting continues to increase. The development of the grouting method was focused on increasing the strength of the ground, and the development of the chemical additives, the injection device, and the stirring device were mainly performed. But ordinary portland cement used for grouting is a product that consumes natural resources such as limestone, generates a large amount of greenhouse gases, consumes a large amount of energy sources, and it is time to develop products and new methods to replace them. In this study, Ordinary Portland Cement and New Grouting Binder (circulating fluidized bed boiler fly and blast furnace slag) were compared and analyzed by the following test. Homo-gel strength and homo-gel time, water quality analysis of the water used and soil contamination process tests of homo-gel samples were performed. In the case of NGB, when Using water is used as the reservoir water, the strength measured smaller than that of the other water. However, it shows about 2.5 times greater than the homo-gel compressive strength applied to OPC (7-day, reservoir water), so there is no problem with water quality when applied.

  • Since sediment in a stable state is disturbed during the process from sediment in a natural state to dredged soil, the turbidity of water is not good. When the dredged soil settles again, the volume change in the sediment occurs. Coagulant and flocculant are added for turbidity mitigation of the water and faster settling process of suspended solid, and the amount of the substances affects the characteristics of the dredged soil. This study is to investigate the characteristics of the dredged soil depending on the amount of three chemical products added to the wet dredged soil and the dry dredged soil through measuring the suspended solids (SS), volume change and sedimentation velocity. The experimental measurements show that the SS decreased, the volume change rate increased, and the sedimentation velocity increased, as the chemical amount increased. In addition, it was found that the dry dredged soil reacted even with little quantity of the chemicals because derelict and microorganism are removed due to the drying process at $100{\pm}5^{\circ}C$.

  • The gas hydrates are probably most sensitive to climate change since they are stable only under specific conditions of high pressure and low temperature. One of the main factors responsible for formation of gas hydrates is the saturation of the gases with water vapor. Quantitative phase equilibrium data and understanding of the roles of water component in the phase behavior of the heterogeneous water-hydrocarbon-hydrate mixture are of importance and of engineering value. In this study, the water content of ethylene gas in equilibrium with hydrate and water phases were analyzed by theoretical and experimental methods at temperatures between 274.15 up to 291.75 K and pressures between 593.99 to 8,443.18 kPa. The experimental and theoretical enhancement factors (EF) for the water content of ethylene gas and the fugacity coefficients of water and ethylene in gas phase were determined and compared with each other over the entire range of pressure carried out in this experiment. In order to get the theoretical enhancement factors, the modified Redlich-Kwong equation of state was used. The Peng-Robinson equations and modified Redlich-Kwong equations of state were used to get the fugacity coefficients for ethylene and water in the gas phase. The results predicted by both equations agree very well with the experimental values for the fugacity coefficients of the compressed ethylene gas containing small amount of water, whereas, those of water vapor do not in the ethylene rich gas at high temperature for hydrate formation locus.

  • Solvolytic rate constants at 25 $^{\circ}C$ are reported for solvolysis of chlorodithioformate (1) in binary mixtures of water with acetone, ethanol, methanol, methanol-d, 50%methanol-d/50%D2O, and 2,2,2-trifluroethanol (TFE), and also in TFE-ethanol mixtures. The Grunwald-Winstein plot shows that the three aqueous mixtures exhibit dispersions into separate line. The correlation is improved only slightly by additional parameters NT for solvent nucleophilicity and/or I for aromatic ring parameter. Rate ratios in solvents of the same $Y_cl$ value, having different nucleophilicity provide measures of the minimum extent of nucleophilic solvent assistance, and the value of 3.35 for $[$k_{40EW}$/$k_97TFE$]_Y$ (EW = ethanol-water), is consistent with an essentially SN1 reaction mechanism. This study has shown that the magnitude of l, m and h values associated with a change of solvent composition is able to predict the SN1 reaction mechanism. log(k/$k_o$) = mY + lN + hI

  • Membrane separation is widely used for several applications such as water treatment, membrane reactors and climate change. Cross-linked organic-inorganic hybrid polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) / Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) was adopted for the preparation of optimized hollow membrane (HFM) for membrane distillation or other low pressure separators for mechanical properties and permeability under varying pretreatment schemes. HFMs were prepared on semi-pilot membrane fabrication system. Novel adopted post-treatment schemes involved soaking in glycerol, magnesium sulphate (MgSO4), sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), and isopropanol for different durations. All fibers were characterized for morphology using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), surface roughness using atomic force microscope (AFM), elemental composition by examining Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), water contact angle (CA°) and porosity. The performance of the fibers was evaluated for pure water permeation flux (PWF). Post-treatment with MgSO4 gave the highest both tensile modulus and flux. Assessment of properties and performance revealed comparable results with other organic-inorganic separators, HF or flat. In spite of few reported data on post treatment using MgSO4 in presence of TEOS, this proves the potential of low cost treatment without negative impact on other membrane properties. The flux is also comparable with hypochlorite which manifests substantial precaution requirements in actual industrial use.The relatively high values of flux/bar for sample treated with TEOS, post treated with MgSO4 and hypochlorite are 88 and 82 LMH/bar respectively.

  • A nascent membrane was prepared by using the solution evaporation method with a solution of sPEEK, EdAn (cross-linking reagent), and PEA (grafting reagent) in DMAc. Then, after the imination and sulfonation process the cross-linked and grafted ion-exchange membrane, CG-sPEEK, was obtained. The sulfonation and imination reactions were confirmed by FTIR analysis. In order to evaluate the possibility of prepared membrane for the use of an ion-exchange membrane in PEMFC, proton conductivity, water uptake and volume change were measured and compared with a commercial membrane, Nafion 115. It was revealed that since the proton conductivity (0.17 S/cm) of prepared membrane were much higher than those of Nafion 115 (0.10 S/cm) the prepared membrane could be used for the ion-exchange membrane in PEMFC. However, the high water uptake (130%) of CG-sPEEK should be reduced for the dimension stability.

  • The development of a low cost catalyst with high performance and small amount of carbon deposition on catalyst from toluene steam reforming were investigated by using coal ash as a support material. Ni-loaded coal ash catalyst showed similar catalytic activity for toluene steam reforming compared with the Ni/Al2O3. At 800 ℃, the toluene conversion was 77% for Ni/TAL, 68% for Ni/KPU and 78% for Ni/Al2O3. Ni/TAL showed similar toluene conversion to Ni/Al2O3. However, Ni/KPU produced higher hydrogen yield at relatively lower toluene conversion. Ni/KPU catalyst showed a remarkable ability of suppressing the carbon deposition. The difference in coke deposition and hydrogen yield is due to the composition of KPU ash (Ca and Fe) which increase coke resistance and water gas shift reaction. This study suggests that coal ash catalysts have great potential for the application in the steam reforming of biomass tar.
