The aim of this study is to investigate strength and water purification characteristics of effective microorganism-applied volcanic ash block using flexural strength test and water quality analysis. The specimens were prepared with volcanic ash from Mt. Baekdusan and Mt. Hallasan, and cement as the ratios of 3.5:1, 4.0:1, 4.5:1, 5.0:1 with and without metakaolin. Flexural strength degraded with increasing of the amount of volcanic ash, and increased with addition of metakaolin as a binder. Based on these results, the optimal ratio for fabricating volcanic ash-cement mixture block is determined as 3.5:1 with metakaolin. Furthermore, from water quality analysis on contaminated water, removal ability of effective microorganism-applied volcanic ash-cement mixture block and caged volcanic ash block against T-N, T-P and SS was highly evaluated because of adsorption due to the large specific surface area of volcanic ash. Hence, volcanic ash-cement mixture block and caged volcanic ash block possibly contribute to water purification.
Low-calcium fly ash (LCFA) were used to prepare cement/LCFA specimens in this study. The basic physical properties including water demand, fluidity, setting time, soundness and drying shrinkage of cement/LCFA paste were investigated. The effects of curing time, immersion time and wet-dry cycles in 3% $Na_2SO_4$ solution on the compressive strength and the microstructures of specimens were also discussed. The results show that LCFA increases the water demand, setting time, soundness of cement paste samples. 50% and 60% LCFA replacement ratio decrease the drying shrinkage of hardened cement paste. The compressive strength of plain cement specimens decreases at the later immersion stage in 3% $Na_2SO_4$ solution. The addition of LCFA can decrease this strength reduction of cement specimens. For all specimens with LCFA, the compressive strength increases with increasing immersion time. During the wet-dry cycles, the compressive strength of plain cement specimens decreases with increasing wet-dry cycles. However, the pores in the specimens with 30% and 40% LCFA at early ages could be large enough for the crystal of sodium sulfate, which leads to the compressive strength increase with the increase of wet-dry cycles in 3% $Na_2SO_4$ solution. The microstructures of cement/LCFA specimens are in good agreement with the compressive strength.
This study investigates experimentally into the design factors and quality variations having an effect on the properties of the combined high flowing concrete to be poured in the slurry wall of Inchon LNG in-ground receiving terminal. Especially, high belite cement and lime stone powder as cementitious materials and viscosity agent in order to improve self-compaction and hydration heat are used in this study. Water-cement ratio(W/C), fine aggregate volume ratio(Sr) and coarse aggregate volume ratio(Gv) as design factors of the combined high flowing concrete are applied to determine the optimum mix design proportion. Also quality variations for sensitivity test are selected items as followings. (1)Surface moisture(5cases) and (2)Fineness modulus of fine aggregate(5cases), (3)Concrete temperature(3cases), (4)Specific surface(3cases) and particle size of lime stone powder. As experimental results, water-cement ratio, fine and coarse aggregate volume ratio are shown as the optimum range 51%, 43% and 53% separately considering site condition of slurry wall. Also quality factors by sensitivity test should be controlled in the following ranges. (1) Surface moisture :to.67% and (2)Fineness modulus 2.6$\pm$0.2 of fine aggregate, (3)Concrete temperature l0-20t, (4) Specific surface 6,000$\textrm{cm}^2$/g and particle size 9.7$\pm$1.0${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of lime stone powder. Based on the results of this study, the optimum mix design proportion of the combined high flowing concrete are selected and poured successfully in the slurry wall of LNG in-ground tank.
Sand compaction pile and stone column replacement methods have been commonly used for improving soft ground in the nearshore. Recently, DCM (Deep cement mixing) method, which can harden soft clays by mixing with cement, is more popularly used in such soft ground improvement. Sandy soils also exist in the seashore. Therefore, in this study, the effect of salinity in sea water and curing methods on the strength of cemented sand was evaluated in terms of unconfined compressive strength (UCS). The sand was mixed with five different cement ratios and distilled water or sea water, and then compacted into a cylindrical specimen. They were cured for 3 days under sea water for DCM construction condition and air cured for onshore curing condition. When a specimen was cured under sea water without confinement, it was easily collapsed due to initiation of cracks. When the cement ratio and curing method were the same, the UCS of the specimen without sea water was at maximum 3.5 times higher than those with sea water. The sea water used for mixing sand had more influence on strength reduction than the sea water used for curing. When the cement ratio was the same, the UCS of air-cured specimen was at average 2 times higher than those of water-cured specimen, regardless of water used.

This study examined the effect of binder-to-soil ratio(B/S) and water-to-binder ratio(W/B) on the flow and compressive strength development of soil concrete using high-volume supplementary cementitious materials. As a partial replacement of ordinary portland cement, 10% by-pass dust, 40% ground granulated blast-furnace slag, and 25% circulating fluidized bed combustion fly ash were determined in the preliminary tests. Using the low-cement binder incorporated with clay soil or sandy soil, a total of 18 soil concrete mixtures was prepared. The flow of the soil concrete tended to increase with the increase in W/B and B/S, regardless of the type of soils. The compressive strength was commonly higher in sandy soil concrete than in clay soil concrete with the same mixture condition. Considering the high-workability and compressive strength development, it could be recommended for low-cement soil concrete to be mixed under the following condition: B/S of 0.35 and W/B of 175%.

Waste foundry sand (WFS) is the waste product that cause environmental hazards. WFS can be used as a partial replacement of cement or fine aggregates in concrete. A database comprising 234 compressive strength tests of concrete fabricated with WFS is used. To construct the machine learning-based prediction models, the water-to-cement ratio, WFS replacement percentage, WFS-to-cement content ratio, and fineness modulus of WFS were considered as the model's inputs, and the compressive strength of concrete is set as the model's output. A base extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model together with two hybrid XGBoost models mixed with the tunicate swarm algorithm (TSA) and the salp swarm algorithm (SSA) were applied. The role of TSA and SSA is to identify the optimum values of XGBoost hyperparameters to obtain the higher performance. The results of these hybrid techniques were compared with the results of the base XGBoost model in order to investigate and justify the implementation of optimisation algorithms. The results showed that the hybrid XGBoost models are faster and more accurate compared to the base XGBoost technique. The XGBoost-SSA model shows superior performance compared to previously published works in the literature, offering a reduced system error rate. Although the WFS-to-cement ratio is significant, the WFS replacement percentage has a smaller influence on the compressive strength of concrete. To improve the compressive strength of concrete fabricated with WFS, the simultaneous consideration of the water-to-cement ratio and fineness modulus of WFS is recommended.

The results of an experimental study on the manufacture and the mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced silica fume.cement composites and light weight fly ash.cement composites are presented in this paper. The CF reinforced silica fume.cement composites using silica fume early strength cement were prepared with Pan-derived or Pitch-derived CF, and Lt. Wt, fly ash.cement composites using fly ash, early strength cement, perlite and a small amount of foaming agent. As the test results show, the flexural strength, toughness and ductility of CF reinforced silica fume .cement composites were remarkably increased by fiber contents. Also, the manufacturing process technology of Lt. Wt. fly ash.cement composites was developed and its optimum mix proportions were proposed. And the compressive and flexural strength of the fly ash.cement composites by hot water cured were improved even more than by moist cured, but are decreased by increasing fly ash replaced ratio for cement.
This research aimed to investigate the influence of high-volume mineral admixtures (MAs), i.e., fly ash and slag, on the hydration characteristics and microstructures of cement pastes. Degree of cement hydration was quantified by the loss-on-ignition technique and degree of pozzolanic reaction was determined by a selective dissolution method. The influence of MAs on the pore structure of paste was measured by mercury intrusion porosimetry. The results showed that the hydration properties of the blended pastes were a function of water to binder ratio, cement replacement level by MAs, and curing age. Pastes containing fly ash exhibited strongly reduced early strength, especially for mix with 45% fly ash. Moreover, at a similar cement replacement level, slag incorporated cement paste showed higher degrees of cement hydration and pozzolanic reaction than that of fly ash incorporated cement paste. Thus, the present study demonstrates that high substitution rates of slag for cement result in better effects on the short- and long-term hydration properties of cement pastes.
This paper presents the optimized mixing design of lightweight aerated concrete using hydrogen peroxide. Design of experiments in order to the optimized mixing design was applied and commercial program (MINITAB) was used. Statistical analysis was used to Box-Behnken (B-B) method in response surface analysis. The influencing factors of experimental are unit cement content, water ratio and hydrogen peroxide ratio. According to the analysis of variance, at the hardened state, water ratio and hydrogen peroxide ratio affects on dried density, compressive strength and bending strength of lightweight aerated concrete, but unit cement content affects on only dried density. In the results of response surface analysis, to obtain goal performance, the optimized mixing design for lightweight aerated concrete using hydrogen peroxide were unit cement content of 800 kg/$m^3$, water ratio of 44.33% and hydrogen peroxide ratio of 10%.

The aim of this research work is to investigate the mix proportion of multi-component cement incorporating ground granulated blast furnace(GGBFS), fly ash(FA) and silica fume(SF) as an addition to cement in ternary and quaternary combinations. The water-binder ratio was 0.45. In this study, 50% and 60% replacement ratios of mineral admixture to OPC was used, while series of combination of 20~40% GGBFS, 5~35% FA and 0~15% SF binder were used for fundamental characteristics tests. This study concern the GGBFS/FA ratio and SF contents of multi-component cement including the compressive strength, water absorptions, ultrasonic pulse velocity(UPV), drying shrinkage and X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysises. The results show that the addition of SF can reduce the water absorption and increase the compressive strength, UPV and drying shrinkage. These developments in the compressive strength, UPV and water absorption can be attributed to the fact that increase in the SF content tends basically to consume the calcium hydroxide crystals released from the hydration process leading to the formation of further CSH(calcium silicate hydrate). The strength, water absorption and UPV increases with an increase in GGBFS/FA ratios for a each SF contents. The relationship between GGBFS/FA ratios and compressive strength, water absorption, UPV is close to linear. It was found that the GGBFS/FA ratio and SF contents is the key factor governing the fundamental properties of multi-component cement.
