  • A biodegradable shatterproof thin film material having excellent water resistance and applicability was prepared by crosslinking through esterification of starch and citric acid. In order to improve the thin film formation and physical properties of these materials, PVA and glycerin were added to secure the flexibility of the applied thin film. In addition, conditions for optimizing material functionality such as swelling degree and solubility in water according to reaction time, temperature, and concentrations of raw materials and additives were analyzed. The crosslinking reaction of starch and citric acid was confirmed by FT-IR analysis, and it was found that single and multiple esterification reactions occurred simultaneously in these reaction processes. It can be seen that the crosslinked starch-citric acid thin film material was decomposed about 95% after 12 weeks after landfilling, and thus biodegradability was excellent.

  • Background: Ginsenosides (GS) have potential value as cosmetic additives for prevention of skin photoaging. However, their protective mechanisms against skin barrier damage and their active monomeric constituents are unknown. Methods: GS monomer types and their relative proportions were identified. A UVB-irradiated BALB/c hairless mouse model was used to assess protective effects of GS components on skin epidermal thickness and transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Skin barrier function, reflected by filaggrin (FLG), involucrin (IVL), claudin-1 (Cldn-1), and aquaporin 3 (AQP3) levels and MAPK phosphorylation patterns, were analyzed in UVB-irradiated hairless mice or HaCaT cells. Results: Total GS monomeric content detected by UPLC was 85.45% and was largely attributed to 17 main monomers that included Re (16.73%), Rd (13.36%), and Rg1 (13.38%). In hairless mice, GS ameliorated UVB-induced epidermal barrier dysfunction manifesting as increased epidermal thickness, increased TEWL, and decreased stratum corneum water content without weight change. Furthermore, GS treatment of UVB-irradiated mice restored protein expression levels and epidermal tissue distributions of FLG, IVL, Cldn-1, and AQP3, with consistent mRNA and protein expression results obtained in UVB-irradiated HaCaT cells (except for unchanging Cldn-1 expression). Mechanistically, GS inhibited JNK, p38, and ERK phosphorylation in UVB-irradiated HaCaT cells, with a mixture of Rg2, Rg3, Rk3, F2, Rd, and Rb3 providing the same protective MAPK pathway inhibition-associated upregulation of IVL and AQP3 expression as provided by intact GS treatment. Conclusion: GS protection against UVB-irradiated skin barrier damage depends on activities of six ginsenoside monomeric constituents that inhibit the MAPK signaling pathway.

  • The porosity formation by the addition of additives was found to be the highest in the case of aluminum powder 3% and $Ca(OH)_2$ 2% under the condition that strength was maintained. The optimum mixing ratio of the binder was shown to be the most effective at (Ash+Food waste+clay):(water glass+colloidal silica) 7:3, and the temperature response is most economical and effective at $1,000^{\circ}C$. The optimal mixing ratio is the strength in 30% of ash, 30% of clay and 10% of food waste, which is the effective in non-point pollution water treatment. Filter media produced under optimal mixing conditions were analyzed as $SiO_2$ 65.8%, density $1.4g/cm^3$, porosity 25.6%, pH 9.8, and no hazardous substances were detected. As a result of the filtration of the water treatment, the mean concentration of the filtered SS was $14.06mg/{\ell}$, and the removal efficiency of SS was 90%, the recovery rate of the reversal is 97.1%. This enables the development of filter media considering economic efficiency and efficiency as well as the utilization of waste resources, enabling high value added of waste resources.

  • Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the physicochemical properties (nutrient composition, pH, water content and activity, sorption properties) and mechanical properties (compression force and energy) of granulated feed mixtures with various inclusion levels of crude fibre concentrates ARBOCEL and VITACEL for broiler chickens, i.e. +0.0% (control group - group C), +0.3%, +0.8%, +1.0%, +1.2%. Methods: The feed mixtures were analyzed for their physicochemical properties (nutrient composition by near-infrared spectroscopy, pH with the use a CP-401 pH meter with an IJ-44C glass electrode, water content was determined with the drying method and activity was determined with the Aqua Lab Series 3, sorption properties was determined with the static method) and mechanical properties (compression force and energy with the use TA-HD plus texture analyzer). The Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer (GAB) model applied in the study correctly described the sorption properties of the analyzed feed mixtures in terms of water activity. Results: The fibre concentrate type affected the specific surface area of the adsorbent and equilibrium water content in the GAB monolayer (p≤0.05) (significantly statistical). The type and dose of the fibre concentrate influenced the dimensionless C and k parameters of the GAB model related to the properties of the monolayer and multilayers, respectively (p≤0.05). They also affected the pH value of the analyzed feed mixtures (p≤0.05). In addition, crude fibre type influenced water activity (p≤0.05) as well as compression energy (J) and compression force (N) (p≤0.001) (highly significantly statistical) of the feed mixtures. Conclusion: The physicochemical analyses of feed mixtures with various inclusion levels (0.3%, 0.8%, 1.0%, 1.2%) of crude fiber concentrates ARBOCEL or VITACEL demonstrated that both crude fiber types may be used in the feed industry as a feedstuff material to produce starter type mixtures for broiler chickens.

  • Cuttings based on water media are relatively low-cost and easy to manage compared to those based on soil media. Nevertheless, species that root out in water media are very few. Water-medium rooted cuttings are not widely used. In water media, the survival rate of cuttings is high, but in many cases, they only form callus while not rooting. If cuttings with callus formed in a water medium were to root and survive after being transplanted in soil, water-medium cuttings could be used as an important means of propagating landscape tree species. In this study, cuttings of Ternstroemia japonica having various reactions to water media were soaked in different types of water media. Their callus formation and rooting conditions were analyzed. The water-medium cutting swere then transplanted in soil, and conditions for their survival were examined. The study concluded: 1. Cuttings that only formed callus in water media were able to root and survive after being transplanted. 2. Cuttings with satisfactory callus formation showed more satisfactory survival conditions than those with unsatisfactory callus formation. 3. Cuttings rooted in water media showed a high survival rate of 96.6% after being transplanted. 4. Water-medium cutting of Ternstroemia japonica proved to be more effective in Late July or August than in late June. 5. Cuttings pre-treated in 50ppm-IBA for 24 hours showed better survival conditions than those that were not pre-treated inIBA. 6. Cuttings pre-treated in 50ppm-IBA for 24 hours and soaked in water media with 0.02% atonic, 0.02% polyoxin, and 0.01% polyoxin showed a rooting and survival rate of 80 to 85%. Regardless their low rooting rate, water-medium cuttings can show a high survival rate when these factors are considered: proper cutting time, plant hormone treatment, and types of water media. Accordingly, water-medium cuttings will emerge as major means of propagating landscape tree species that require small volumes of multi-species.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the durability of low shrinkage high performance concrete(LSHPC), which was combined with expansive additives and shrinkage reducing admixtures. We tested for not only LSHPC but also high performance concrete(HPC) and normal concrete(NC) to be compared with the durability of LSHPC. HPC was made in the same water-binder ratio of LSHPC without expansive additives and shrinkage reducing admixture. As a result, it was found that LSHPC had higher compressive and tensile strength than that of HPC. LSHPC showed more excellent performance than HPC and NC in the case of resistance to chloride ion penetration and resistance to carbonation and also showed nearly 100 durability factor in the freeze-thawing test with 500 cycles. From the examination about the watertightness and the pore distribution, it was found that the durability of LSHPC was improved because its hardened cement paste is organized closer. So we can conclude that when LSHPC is applied to structures in field, it is possible to reduce the shrinkage and crack in concrete and improve the durability.

  • Treatability of heavy metals in marine sediments contaminated with mainly organic matter was investigated on the basis of washing technology using oxidizers and surfactants. Sediment samples were collected at N area which expected for remediation project of contaminated marine sediment. For additives, hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) and Tween-80 were used at oxidizer and nonionic surfactant, respectively. In experiments, sediments was mixed with sea water at the ratio of 1 : 3 than $H_2O_2$ (1 M, 3 M, 4 M, 5 M) and Tween-80 (0.05%) were added. Samples were gathered at following reaction time (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 min and 24 h). Total Organic Carbon (TOC) was 55.2% at the conditions of 5 M $H_2O_2+0.05%$ Tween-80 24 h. Hence total heavy metals were Cu 29.5%, Zn 42.3%, Cd 73.0% and bioavailable heavy metals were Cu 60.0%, Zn 77.7%, Cd 90.2% at the conditions of 5 M $H_2O_2+0.05%$ Tween-80 10 min. The correlations for between bioavailable metals (Cu, Zn, Cd) and TOC were significant (Cu, Zn, Cd; $r^2=0.94$, 0.85, 0.69, respectively).

  • TCM-KWG (tissue culture medium waste after harvest of Korean wild ginseng) (panax ginseng) is left over of tissue culture medium used to grow Korean wild ginseng (KWG). The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of TCM-KWG on meat quality and the possible of application as additives in broiler chickens. A day old broiler chickens randomized in 6 groups (n=60/groups) were administered orally with 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 mL/L TCM-KWG through drinking water with one untreated control group. After administration for five weeks, we analyzed chemical composition and meat quality. Crude ash increased approximately 20% in TCM-KWG treatment groups as compared to control group whereas the concentration of moisture, crude protein and crude fat did not show any significant difference. Crude ash is essential to enhance skeleton formation and physiological function. TCM-KWG treatment gradually decreased the pH value of breast meat whereas it did not change the purge loss and cooking loss. The pH value of meat is important for preservation of meat for longer periods and high durability strength. These results suggest that TCM-KWG treatment may improve the quality of meat and can be apply as food additives in chickens.

  • The optimal amount of loquat leaf extract (LLE, $18^{\circ}$ Brix), fructose, and cream were determined to develop a rice beverage supplemented with LLE. The loquat leaves were extracted by water at $80^{\circ}C$ for 6 hrs and then concentrated to 18% of solid for 1 hr at the same temperature to extraction. To investigate the optimal concentration of the additives, the response surface methodology (RSM) was employed for the experimental design. The addition amounts of the additives were coded. Sweetness, bitterness, off-taste, color, taste preference, and total preference were affected significantly (P<0.05) by the addition of LLE, fructose, and cream. Cream masked the bitterness and off-taste. The total preference of the LLEsupplemented rice beverage showed a lower score than the commercialiy available rice beverages. To achieve the preference level of the commercial rice beverages, the regression between fructose and LLE concentration was calculated as: fructose= $0.618{\times}(LLE)^2+0.406{\times}(LLE)$. Conclusively, cream had an effect of masking the bitterness of rice milk, and the preference was highly related to the addition amount of fructose.

  • The effects of various seasoning components, pH of seasoning solution, heating time and storage temperature were investigated on the color and textural properties of the salted radish root (nanmooji) The effects of individual seasoning components in the salted radish root, additives of polyphosphate (AD3), citric acid (AD5), malic acid (AD2) delayed the color changes and softening more, compared to control soaked in water. On the other hand, additives of potassium sorbate (AD1), succinic acid (AD7), MSG (AD8), saccharin (AD6) accelerated the color changes and softening of the salted radish roots. The effects of pH of seasoning solution($X_1$), and heating time ($X_2$) were central composite design and response surface analysis. R- square represented dependent variables correlated independent variables ($X_1,\;X_2$), showed over 0.8 in the color and area value calculated thickness and firmness of salted radish root. Especially, R- square of 'b' represented 'yellow-green' was 0.899. And the result of crossing analysis of individual independent variables ($X_1,\;X_2$), showed that both independent variables had significant effects on the color and textural changes of the salted radish root. The salted radish root increased its color changes and softening, rapidly at $40^{\circ}C$, compared to the other storage temperatures at most storage periods.
