Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of storage time and formic acid (FA) on fermentation characteristics, epiphytic microflora, carbohydrate components and in vitro digestibility of rice straw silage. Methods: Fresh rice straw was ensiled with four levels of FA (0%, 0.2%, 0.4%, and 0.6% of fresh weight) for 3, 6, 9, 15, 30, and 60 d. At each time point, the silos were opened and sampled for chemical and microbial analyses. Meanwhile, the fresh and 60-d ensiled rice straw were further subjected to in vitro analyses. Results: The results showed that 0.2% and 0.6% FA both produced well-preserved silages with low pH value and undetected butyric acid, whereas it was converse for 0.4% FA. The populations of enterobacteria, yeasts, moulds and aerobic bacteria were suppressed by 0.2% and 0.6% FA, resulting in lower dry matter loss, ammonia nitrogen and ethanol content (p<0.05). The increase of FA linearly (p<0.001) decreased neutral detergent fibre and hemicellulose, linearly (p<0.001) increased residual water soluble carbohydrate, glucose, fructose and xylose. The in vitro gas production of rice straw was decreased by ensilage but the initial gas production rate was increased, and further improved by FA application (p<0.05). No obvious difference of FA application on in vitro digestibility of dry matter, neutral detergent fibre, and acid detergent fibre was observed (p>0.05). Conclusion: The 0.2% FA application level promoted lactic acid fermentation while 0.6% FA restricted all microbial fermentation of rice straw silages. Rice straw ensiled with 0.2% FA or 0.6% FA improved its nutrient preservation without affecting digestion, with the 0.6% FA level best.
A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with diode array detector (DAD) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) was established for the simultaneous determination of chlorogenic acid (1), sweroside (2), luteolin-7-O-glucoside (3), (E)-aldosecologanin (4) and 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (5) from Lonicera joponica flower buds. The optimal chromatographic conditions were obtained on an ODS column (5 ${\mu}m$, 4.6${\times}$150 mm) with the column temperature $25^{\circ}C$. The mobile phase was composed of (A) water with 0.1% formic acid and (B) acetonitrile with 0.1% formic acid using a gradient elution, the flow rate was 0.3 ml/min. Detection wavelength was set at 250 nm. All calibration curves showed good linear regression ($r^2$>0.994) within test ranges. The developed method provided satisfactory precision and accuracy with overall intra-day and inter-day variations of 0.05${\sim}$1.95% and 0.15${\sim}$2.26%, respectively, and the overall recoveries of 97.71${\sim}$103.65% for the five compounds analyzed. The verified method was successfully applied to quantitative determination of the three types (phenolic compounds, iridoids and flavonoids) of bioactive compounds in 21 commercial L. japonica flower buds samples from different markets in Korea and China. The analytical results demonstrated that the contents of the five analytes vary significantly with sources.

A sensitive and selective liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was developed for the investigation of the ginsenoside Rg1 in human plasma. After addition of internal standard (digoxin), plasma was diluted with acetone and methanol (80:20), the supernatant was concentrated and analyzed by LC-MS/MS. The optimal chromatographic separation was achieved on an Agilent Eclipse XDB-C18 column ($4.6{\times}150mm$, $5{\mu}m$) with a mobile phase of 0.1% formic acid in water and 0.1% formic acid in methanol at a flow rate of 0.9 mL/min gradient mode. The standard calibration curve for ginsenoside Rg1 was linear ($r^2=0.9995$) over the concentration range 1~500 ng/mL in human plasma. The intra- and inter-day precision over the concentration range of ginsenoside Rg1 was lower than 7.53% (correlation of variance, CV), and accuracy exceeded 98.28%. This LC-MS/MS assay of ginsenoside Rg1 in human plasma is applicable for quantifying in the pharmacokinetic study.
$TiO_2$ impregnated stainless steel fiber photocatalysts ($TiO_2/SSF$) were fabricated to overcome inherent problems of powdery $TiO_2$ photocatalysts in water treatment. Adhesion strength of the impregnated $TiO_2$ was examined using an ultrasonic-cleaner. Photocatalytic activity was evaluated through decomposition experiment of methylene blue and formic acid. Bactericidal efficiency was evaluated through sterilization experiment of E. Coli and Vibrio Vulnificus. Adhesion strength of the impregnated $TiO_2$ was so high that more than 95% was left over even after the treatment in an ultrasonic-cleaner for 30 min. Methylene blue and formic acid were decomposed as much as 60% and 38% of the initial concentration and more than 99.9% of E. Coli and Vibrio Vulnificus were killed after 1 hour exposure to the prepared photocatalyst under UV irradiation. In the case of decomposition of formic acid, decomposition ratio increased if oxidants were added. Especially the decomposition ratio increased as high as 80% when hydrogen peroxide was added as an oxidant.
To study the most optimum condition of Dongchimi, the various Dongchimi distinct from the amount of salt, the temperature of fermentation and the ratio of radish to water were examed by sensory evaluation. Also, the content of volatile organic acids and nonvolatile organic acids were investigated by GC, the content of sulfur compounds by GC/MS. Volatile organic acids were identified with those butyl esters and nonvolatile organic acids were done with those TMS derivatives. Sulfur compounds and those decomposed products were extracted by steam distillation In results, the most optimum conditions ware salt 2.4% fermented temperature $4^{\circ}C$, ratio 1:1.5. Volatile organic acids detected were formic, acetic acid, and the amounts were effected by saltness. Nonvolatile organic acids detected were lactio, malio, fumario, tartario acid. Lactic acid was thought to effect overall eating quality. Sulfur compounds were almost the isothiocyanate groups in raw radish, which little in fermented Dongchimi.
This study evaluated the fermentation characteristics and protein degradation dynamics of wet green tea grounds (WGTG) silage. The WGTG was ensiled with distilled water (control), or lactic acid bacteria (LAB), enzyme (E), formic acid (FA) and formaldehyde (FD) prior to ensiling. Three bag silos for each treatment were randomly opened at 0, 3, 7, 14, 28 and 60 days after anaerobic storage. For all the treatments, except for FA, there was a rapid decline in pH during the first 7 days of ensiling. LAB treatment had higher lactic acid content, lower ammonia-N ($NH_3$-N) and free-amino nitrogen (FAA-N) contents than other treatments (p<0.05). E treatment had higher lactic acid, water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC) and non-protein nitrogen (NPN) content than the control (p<0.05). FA treatment had higher $NH_3$-N and FAA-N content than the control (p<0.05). FD treatment had lower NPN and FAA-N content than the control, but it did not significantly inhibit the protein degradation when compared to LAB treatment (p>0.05). Results indicate that LAB treatment had the best effect on the fermentation characteristics and protein degradation of WGTG silage.
To improve the energy efficiency of conventional thermal treatment, soil remediation with microwave has been studied. In this study, the remediation efficiency of contaminated soil with semi-volatile organic contaminants were evaluated with microwave oven and several additives such as water, formic acid, iron powder, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution, and activated carbon. For the experiment, loamy sand and sandy loam collected from Imjin river flood plain were intentionally contaminated with hexachlorobenzene and phenanthrene, respectively. The contaminated soils were treated with microwave facility and the mass removals of organic contaminants from soils were evaluated. Among additives that were added to increase the remediation efficiency, activated carbon and NaOH solution were more effective than water, iron powder, and formic acid. When 10 g of hexachlorobenzene (142.4 mg/kg-soil) or phenanthrene (2,138.8 mg/kg-soil) contaminated soil that mixed with 0.5 g iron powder, 0.5 g activated carbon and 1 ml 6.25 M NaOH solution were treated with microwave for 3 minutes, more than 95% of contaminants were removed. The degradation of hexachlorobenzene during microwave treatments with additives was confirmed by the detection of pentachlorobenzene and tetrachlorobenzene. Naphthalene and phenol were also detected as degradation products of phenanthrene during microwave treatment with additives. The results showed that adding a suitable amount of additives for microwave treatments fairly increased the efficiency of removing semi-volatile soil organic contaminants.

A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was developed and validated for the determination of caffeine in forensic aqueous sample. The centrifuged sample ($100{\mu}l$) was diluted 50-fold with distilled water. The diluted sample ($400{\mu}l$) was then diluted further with $200{\mu}l$ of 0.1% formic acid solution and $400{\mu}l$ of acetonitrile containing 500 ng of caffeine-(3-methyl-$^{13}C_3$) prior to LC-MS/MS analysis. The mobile phase was composed of 0.1% formic acid in distilled water (A) and acetonitrile (B). Chromatographic separation was performed by using a Zorbax SB-C18 ($100mm{\times}2.1mm$ i.d., $3.5{\mu}m$) column and caffeine was eluted within 1.1 min. Linear least-squares regression with a 1/x weighting factor was used to generate a calibration curve with the coefficients of determination ($r^2=0.9983$). The lower limit of quantification was $25ng/ml$ for the analyte. The process efficiency was 98.6~100.1%. Intra- and inter-day precisions were not more than 2.1% and 1.7%, while intra- and inter-day accuracies were ranged from -6.8 to 4.5%, respectively. The suitability of the method was examined by analyzing unknown forensic aqueous samples.
A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with DAD detector and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) was established for the simultaneous determination of coniferin (1), loganic acid (2), demethylsecologanol (3), sweroside (4) and loganin (5) from caulis Lonicera joponica. The optimal chromatographic conditions were obtained on an ODS column ($5{\mu}m$, $4.6{\times}150mm$) with the column temperature $35^{\circ}C$. The mobile phase was composed of (A) water with 0.1% formic acid and (B) methanol with 0.1% formic acid using a gradient elution, the flow rate was 0.3 ml/min. Detection wavelength was set at 254 nm. All calibration curves showed good linear regression ($r^2$>0.998) within test ranges. The developed method provided satisfactory precision and accuracy with overall intra-day and interday variations of 0.16~3.28% and 0.14~1.99%, respectively, and the overall recoveries of 99.39~105.89% for the five compounds analyzed. The verified method was successfully applied to quantitative determination of the two types (phenolic compounds and iridoids) of bioactive compounds in 24 commercial caulis L. japonica samples from different markets in Korea and China. The analytical results demonstrated that the contents of the five analytes vary significantly with sources.
