Reported is a visual and quantitative experimental study on the two-phase flow and heat transfer characteristics of miniature two-phase closed thermosyphons with wire inserts. The visual study clearly demonstrated the two-phase flow involved in such thermosyphons. In the quantitative study, the effects on the heat transfer rate of the insert wire diameter, the ratio of heated-length to cooled length and the applied heat flux were investigated.

This paper - following 'Development of multi-purpose marine waste cleaning systems for the shallow waters (Part I : preliminary conceptual design)'- describes on the system development and the sea trial performance evaluation(Cho[2003]). The multi-functional seabed waste collecting system and the towing hook system were developed. The maximum working depth of these systems are 15 and 100 meters, respectively(MOMAF[2001]). For the multi-purpose use to collect the marine waste, this system contains floating waste collecting device for the waste on seawater and remained waste collecting device for the waste on seabed, while steel wire cutting system is added for higher efficiency In order to evaluate the system performance, the prototype of multi-functional system was constructed and the sea trial test at shallow water were carried out. As a result, this system operated well with safe and without any interaction so that the developed systems are practicable and applicable.

The purpose of this study was to develop self-heating concrete by utilizing the conduction resistance of concrete in order to reduce the risk of occurrence of black ice in the concrete pavement in winter and to prevent damage caused by freez-thawing effect. For this purpose, it was attempted to evaluate the strength and temperature exothermic characteristics using powder and liquid waste CNTs and a waste cathode agent as a conduction promotion. It was analyzed that liquid waste CNT had an effective dispersion degree in the mortar and a small decrease in strength occurred. In addition, DC 24 V was supplied by applying steel mesh, copper foil and copper wire to the mortar as electrodes, and the temperature change characteristics according to the mixing ratio of spent CNTs, anodes and carbon fibers were evaluated. In addition, by evaluating the temperature characteristics according to the electrode spacing from the selected optimal mixture, it was confirmed that it had sufficient heating characteristics up to an electrode spacing of 100 mm up to AC 50 V.
The generation of waste cable has been continuously increased as a production of electrical and communication media are extended. The current recovery methods, such as mechanical peeling, incineration, solvent extraction and pyrolysis, seems inadequate because they are either hard to apply in some cases or environmentally unacceptable. It has been shown that copper can be effectively separated from the jelly filled type cables using a soybean oil treatment method. As a result, jelly compound is vanished from the wire by soybean oil bath and waste wires are separated copper and PE by the mechanical chipper. This is a more environmentally friendly method than burning, and considerably faster than Stripping.
Impurities removal from waste carbon black was carried out to produce high-grade carbon black. A lot of hydrophilic carbon black is produced as a byproduct of the hydrogen production process by flame decomposition of water. Due to its impurity content such as sulphur, iron, ash and etc., it can only be used as low-grade carbon or burnt out. High-grade hydrophilic carbon black is 3-5 times more expensive than oil-based carbon black because of its process difficulties and requires pollutant treatment. Hydrophilic carbon is normally used far conductive materials for batteries, pigment for plastics, electric wire covering, additives for rubber, etc.. In these applications, hydrophilic carbon must maintain its high purity. In this study magnetic separation, froth flotation and ultrasonic treatment were employed to remove impurities from the low-grade hydrophilic carbon black. As results, the ash, iron and sulphur content of product decreased to less than 0.01wt.%, 0.0lwt.% and 0.3wt.% respectively, and the surface area of product was about 930 $m^2$/g.

A large amount of acidic waste solution is generated from the practical electrokinetic decontamination equipments for the remediation of soil contaminated with uranium. After filtration of uranium hydroxides formed by adding CaO into the waste solution, the filtrate was recycled in order to reduce the volume of waste solution. However, when the filtrate was used in an electrokinetic equipment, the low permeability of the filtrate from anode cell to cathode cell due to a high concentration of calcium made several problems such as the weakening of a fabric tamis, the corrosion of electric wire and the adhension of metallic oxides to the surface of cathode electrode. To solve these problems, sulfuric acid was added into the filtrate and calcium in the solution was removed as $CaSO_4$ precipitate. A decontamination test using a small electrokinetic equipment for 20 days indicated that Ca-removed waste solution decreased uranium concentration of the waste soil to 0.35 Bq/g, which is a similar to a decontamination result obtained by distilled water.
The chromaticity of polyethylene glycol (PEG) generated from the recyling of a silicone slurry waste was improved by using activated carbon powder and a carbon filter. The color change of the PEG waste was investigated by changing the amount of adsorbent, adsorption time and temperature. The surface area of activated carbon did not have a significant impact on improving the color of the PEG waste. According to the results for the APHA color variation of the PEG waste changing the amount of the carbon adsorbent, the optimal usage to achieve the low APHA value was 100~150 mg-C/g-PEG. From the investigatnion on the effect of the adsorption temperature range from $25^{\circ}C$ to $100^{\circ}C$, it was found that the optimal temperatures were $40{\sim}50^{\circ}C$ in terms of achieving the lowest APHA value. The variation of the APHA color was investigated by changing the operation condition of the activated carbon filters. The use of ACF was a good way to enhance the chromaticity of the PEG waste. As a result, the APHA value of the PEG waste (APHA=53 at the initial waste) was reduced to be 10 through the ACF purification. It was also confirmed that the performance of the used carbon adsorbent can be recovered by the washing with purified water.
Bomb calorimeter was developed for measuring the calorific value of combustible matter such as wastes. The calorimeter consist of bomb, stirred-water type bucket, thermometer and ignition circuit. Operation and performance of the calorimeter have been tested experimentally. In the present study, calorific values of light oil, lamp oil and bunker C oil is measured using the bomb calorimeter. Mass of the sample is fixed at lg, and oxygen pressure in the bomb is used as an experimental parameter. Sample in the oxygen bomb is burned with electrically heated Ni-Cr wire of 100mm in length, and temperature of water in the bucket become increased by $5^{\circ}C$ during about 30min. Calorific value of the sample is calculated with the temperature difference of water. Combustion tests, such as the record of temperature history and the inspection of remnants, are performed at 4, 6, 8 and 10 atm of the oxygen pressure. From the test results, oxygen pressure in the bomb must be over 10atm for complete combustion.

Large amounts of the waste SiC sludge containing small amounts of Si and organic lubricant were produced during the wire cutting process of the single silicon crystal ingots. The waste SiC sludge was purified by the washing process and the purified SiC powders were used to fabricate continuously porous $SiC-Si_3N_4$ composites using a fibrous monolithic process, in which carbon, $6wt\%\;Y_2O_3-2\;wt\%\;A1_2O_3$ and ethylene vinyl acetate were added as a pore-forming agent, sintering additives, and binder, respectively. In the burning-out process, carbon was fully removed and continuously porous $SiC-Si_3N_4$ composites were successfully fabricated. The green bodies containing SiC, Si particles and sintering additives were nitrided at $1410^{\circ}C$ in a flowing $N_2+10\%\;H_2$ gas mixture. Continuously porous composites were combined with SiC, ${\alpha}Si_3N_4,\;\beta-Si_3N_4$ and a few $\%$ of Fe phases. The pore size of the 2nd and the 3rd passed $SiC-Si_3N_4$ composites was $260\;{\mu}m$ and $35\;{\mu}m$ in diameter, respectively.
