  • This study investigates the dyeability of soybean protein fabric after dyeing with gallut. In this study, the colorants of gallnut were extracted with boiling water at $60^{\circ}C$ and 60min. Soybean protein fabric was dyed with extracted solution from gallnut according to concentration, temperature and time. After dyeing with gallut solution, dyeability (K/S) was obtained by CCM observation. Al, Cu and Fe were employed as a mordanting agents. Various color changing were produced by the interactions of mordants that were different from soybean protein fabric; however, Al mordant was not indicated as a variable color change. Fastness to washing and light were also investigated. Consequently, the dyeability of the soybean protein fabric dyed with gallut showed reasonable results at 100% o.w.f, $90^{\circ}C$, for 60min. Fastness to washing according to concentration indicated good result as more than grade (4-5) in general. Fastness to light was almost the same compared to fastness to washing at all concentrations. Fastness to washing according to mordants indicated good grade (4) in principle at Al, Cu, and Fe; in addition, fastness to light indicated a good grade too. Fastness to light also indicated the highest dyeability at Fe mordant. This study shows that gallut is a reasonable dyestuff to soybean protein fabric and that it is possible to manufacture a variety of products that use soybean protein fabric.

  • The car washing effluent containing various oils and detergent was treated by ultrafiltration membranes. Dead-end type stirred cell (Amicon 8050) with 10, 30 and lOOk dalton membranes was used to determine permeation and rejection characteristics for the car washing effluent. In case of low molecular weight cut-off membranes, the effect of membrane fouling was weak under the applied pressures. However, the permeation flux for YM100 membrane(look dalton) may be affected by oil layer formation on the membrane surface as well as oil particle plugging for a part of membrane pores due to compressible and deformable oil properties. Oil and particle rejections in the permeates were over 95%, but detergent was passed easily through the membranes. Hence, the permeates containing detergent can be recycled to the system, and may reduce water pollution. Also, the car washing effluent was treated continuously by a capillary type ultrafiltration membrane of MWCO 50k dalton. The experimental data were fitted suitably to the cake filtration model.

  • Soil washing equipment was developed for decontamination of radioactively contaminated soil generated during normal operation or decommissioning and verification experiments were performed. Decontamination effciency above $80{\%}$ was achieved. In case of low radiation level and large particle size, decontamination efficiency was higher. According to the ratio of volume of water to soil quantity, decontamination efficiency was higher in case of high radiation level. Re-decontamination using decontaminated soil was effective in case of small particles. Using soil washing equipment, radioactivity of contaminated soil generated in nuclear power plant can be decreased and volume of soil for disposal can be decreased. And this equipment can be used in decommissioning.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effect of aqueous chlorine dioxide treatment as a washing method on removal of pesticide residues. Three pesticides of chlorpyrifos, diazinon, and metalaxyl, which are commonly used in vegetable crops, were treated with 10, 50, and 100 ppm of aqueous chlorine dioxide and decomposition of the pesticides was determined using gas chromatography. Three pesticides used in this study were decomposed by aqueous chlorine dioxide treatment and removal rate was proportional to treatment time as well as concentration of aqueous chlorine dioxide. In particular, 100 ppm of aqueous chlorine dioxide treatment decreased the pesticides efficiently. In addition, lettuce was treated by dipping in distilled water and 100 ppm aqueous chlorine dioxide, respectively, and was compared regarding removal efficiency of the pesticides. The results revealed that washing with 100 ppm aqueous chlorine dioxide for 10 min was the most effective for removing the pesticides. These results suggest that aqueous chlorine dioxide can be used as a washing method of fresh produce to remove the residual of pesticides.

  • Various methods are used to remediate soil contaminated with heavy metals or petroleum. In recent years, harsh physical and chemical remediation methods are being used to increase remediation efficiency, however, such processes could affect soil properties and degrade the ecological functions of the soil. Effects of soil washing, thermal desorption, and land farming, which are the most frequently used remediation methods, on the physicochemical properties of remediated soil were investigated in this study. For soils smaller than 2 mm, the soil texture were changed from sandy clay loam to sandy loam because of the decrease in the clay content after soil washing, and from loamy sand to sandy loam because of the decrease in the sand content and increase in silt content during thermal desorption, however, the soil texture remained unchanged after land farming process. The water-holding capacity, organic matter content, and total nitrogen concentration of the tested soil decreased after soil washing. A change in soil color and an increase in the available phosphate concentration were observed after thermal desorption. Exchangeable cations, total nitrogen, and available phosphate concentration were found to decrease after land farming; these components were probably used by microorganisms during as well as after the land farming process because microbial processes remain active even after land farming. A study of these changes can provide information useful for the reuse of remediated soil. However, it is insufficient to assess only soil physicochemical properties from the viewpoint of the reuse of remediated soil. Potential risks and ecological functions of remediated soil should also be considered to realize sustainable soil use.

  • In this study, general bacterial counts and coliform counts, which are hygienic indicator microorganisms, were tested for candy, chocolate, and jelly which are easily available and enjoyed around. After dropping each sample on the desk, indoors, and outdoors, it is immediately collected, or washed and collected to confirm the myth of the 3-second rule. Immediately after removing the wrapping paper, each sample was dropped on the desk, indoors, and outdoors, and after 3 seconds from the moment of contact with the surface, and then collected in a sample bag using sterilized sanitary gloves. After the same operation, each sample was rinsed for 5 seconds using sterilized sanitary gloves and sterilized distilled water, and then collected in a sample bag. The number of bacteria detected in non-washing candies was 41 CFU/g at outdoor and the number of bacteria detected in non-washing chocolate was 76 CFU/g at outdoor. The number of bacteria detected in non-washing jellies was 79 CFU/g at outdoor. Coliform group was not detected in all samples. This showed good results at the level of m = 10,000 or less, which is an allowable value suggested in the Food Code. Also, effect of washing on contaminated food was confirmed. This result is remarkably low compared with the microorganism specimens shown in Food Code, and it is confirmed that contamination occurs but not high value. Therefore, the myth of the 3-second rule is true compared to the figures based on Food Code. However, it showed the characteristics of bacteria that could survive and cross-contaminate on dry food surfaces and emphasized the importance of hygiene through food contact to unsanitary surfaces to minimize the risk of food poisoning.

  • Three different methods (simple washing of plastic and pulp sample, washing after direct heating of the diapers, and the heating after washing of plastic and pulp sample) were carried out to decrease total coliforms and heterotrophic plate count (HPC) in the diaper's plastic and pulp. Plastic and pulp samples were obtained from diaper by treatment with 10% $CaCl_2$ and 4% sea salt water, dilution with 1,000 ml tap water, and draining by using sieves. Three times washing was the most appropriate for the reduction of microorganisms in plastic and pulp. By three times washing, the number of total coliforms in the plastic and pulp samples showed 92.8% and 99.8% of decrease, respectively, and the number of HPC showed 97.3% of decrease in the plastic and 98.5% of decrease in the pulp. The washing after direct heating of the fecal contaminated diapers was not effective because HPC in the plastic and pulp samples were still detected about 2-3 log CFU/g in the plastic and 1-2 log CFU/g in the pulp, respectively, even after heating at $60^{\circ}C$, $80^{\circ}C$, $100^{\circ}C$ for 12 h. Meanwhile, total coliforms and HPC were completely sterilized at $80^{\circ}C$ for 4 h by heating after washing of plastic and pulp samples, suggesting that this method was the most appropriate method for the reduction of microorganisms in plastic and pulp obtained from fecal contaminated diapers.

  • The objectives of this study are to investigate the suitability of various coal fly ashes and incineration ashes for zeolite synthesis. Zeolite P and hydroxysodalite are produced from coal fly ash and paper sludge incineration ash. When soluble and acid-soluble materials in incineration fly ash are removed by the water washing or acid washing before hydrothermal synthesis, hydroxysodalite can be produced. The factors to make solid-liquid separation difficult are the calcium component and the unburned carbon in ash.

  • The Rotaviruses are members of the family Reoviridae and are the major cause of severe childhood gastroenteritis worldwide. Recently, electron microscopy has been used to detect non-group A rotaviruses to determine a relatively high resolution structure of the rotavirion. Mature, infectious virions(double-shelled particles) have a diameter of approximately 70nm, and have a capsid structure composed of two concentric protein layers. We have studied patient's stool specimen by negative staining technique complete removal of sucrose suspension. This negative staining technique that could be carried out in about 30 minutes and that could be used with crude stool specimen was an advantage of major significance. Removal of sucrose in the sample by has been completed washing with distilled of sucrose and by washing with distilled water. Ultrastructurally, typical feature of rotavirus has a double capsid construction with an inner capsid of 55nm and on outer 65-70nm diameter can be clearly demonstrated.
