  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to review Korean and Western medical papers on wart treatment. Methods : We searched papers published until 2015 via OASIS and KISS with the keyword "wart". In particular, OASIS is for searching Korean medicine and KISS for Western medicine articles. We exclude results that are inconsistent with established criteria. Results : The total number of papers on wart treatment in korean medicine was 10, and it includes 7 case studies, 2 original research article and 1 statistical analysis. The ones in Western medicine was 42 and it consists of 27 origianl research articles, 10 case studies, 4 comparative studies and 1 clinical study. 'Flat wart' accounts for 50.0% and it made up the biggest portion of the type of warts in Korean medicine, while the percentage of 'various warts' was 40.5% in Western medicine. 'Herbal medicine' accounts for 10(100.0%) and it made up the biggest portion of the the type of treatment in Korean medicine, while the percentage of 'cryo therapy' was 7(16.7%) in Western medicine. The various types of treatment are more introduced on Western than on Korean medicine papers. However, therapy suggested by Western medicine has more side effects than the one introduced by Korean medicine. Conclusions : We hope this article would encourage further research on treatment for warts in Korean medicine.

  • Purpose: A wart is caused by epidermal infection with the human papilloma virus. Although wart naturally disappears in some cases, it require treatment because of pain, aesthetic problem, and the possibility of malignant change. Conventional non-surgical treatment cannot be a fundamental solution for the pain and has such disadvantages as frequent recurrence and difficulties in achieving a satisfactory outcome. A surgical procedure was performed on patients with wart and the procedure had a good outcome. Methods: We investigated the gender, age, lesion site, mean treatment duration, and presence or absence of recurrence in 21 patients with a wart within the period of January 2007 to July 2011. For local lesions, primary closure, including subcuticular suture after the excision, was performed. If the defect size was too big to do primary closure, we performed rotation flap. For wide multiple lesions, a split thickness skin graft was performed. Results: Among the 21 patients, 12 patients were male and 9 patients were female, and their mean age was 42 years (SD=17.38, range: 11~75 years). The lesion site was the foot in 10 patients, the hand in 8 patients, the face in 2 patients, and the scalp in 1 patient. The mean treatment duration was 13.5 days (SD=4.36, range: 6~15 days) for the primary closure or rotation flap, and 18.5 days (SD=2.12, range: 17~20 days) for the skin graft. 20 patients were cured without recurrence. No recurrence was observed in the patients who underwent primary closure or rotation flap. One of the two patients who underwent a skin graft of their wart that had covered their entire palm had local recurrence in part of her finger tips. Conclusion: We performed surgical procedure on recalcitrant wart. As a results, we can treat it with short treatment duration, low recurrence rate and less scarring and get high patient satisfaction.

  • Purpose : To analyze the involvement of apoptosis regulatory genes p53, $p21^{wart/cip1}$ bax and bcl-2 in induction of apoptosis by radiation in murine tumors. Materials and methods : The radiation-sensitive ovarian carcinoma OCa-1, and the radiation-resistant hepatocarcinorna HCa-I were used. Tumors, 8 mm in diameter, were irradiated with 25 Gy and at various times after irradiation, ranging from 1 to 48 h, were analyzed histologically for apoptosis and by western blot for alterations in the expression of these genes. The p53 status of the tumors were determined by the polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism assay. Results : Both tumors were positive for wild-type p53. Radiation inducesd apoptosis in OCa-1 but not in HCa-1. Apoptosis developed rapidly, peaked at 2 h after irradiation and returned to almost the background level at 48 h In OCa-1 radiation upregulated the expression of p53, $p21^{wart/cip1}$. and the bcl-2/bax ratio was decreased. In HCa-1 radiation increased the expression of both p53 and $p21^{wart/cip1}$, although the increase of the latter was small The bcl-2/bax ratio was greatly increased. In general the observed changes occurred within a few hours after irradiation, and either preceded or coincided with development of apoptosis Conclusions : The development of apoptosis required upregulation of both p53 and $p21^{wart/cip1}$ as well as a decrease in bcl-2/bax ratio. In contrast, an increase in bcl-2/bax ratio Prevented apoptosis in the presence of upregulated p53 and $p21^{wart/cip1}$ . These findings indentified the involvement of multiple oncogenes in apoptosis regulation in vivo and demonstrate the complexity that may be associated with the use of a single oncogene assessment for Predicting the outcome of cancer therapy with cytotoxic agents.
