  • Ramjet mode combustion test was performed for a dual-mode ramjet engine model. The engine model consists of an air intake, a combustor and a nozzle. The combustor in the model has a large backward-facing step, designed to be used as a part of a rocket-based combined cycle engine. The test was performed at the flight speed of Mach 5 and the altitude of 24 km. Strong combustion was established only when the fuel was injected from both of the bottom-side and cowl-side wall. When the total fuel stoichiometric ratio was 1.0, distributed as 0.5 on the cowl side and 0.5 on the bottom side, the flow became subsonic at some portion in the combustor by thermal choking, i.e., ramjet mode was established for this condition.

  • In this research, the surface roughness affecting the pressure drop in a pipe used as the steam generator of a PWR was studied. Based on the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) technique using a commercial code named ANSYS-FLUENT, a straight pipe was modeled to obtain the Darcy frictional coefficient, changed with a range of various surface roughness ratios as well as Reynolds numbers. The result is validated by the comparison with a Moody chart to set the appropriate size of grids at the wall for the correct consideration of surface roughness. The pressure drop in a full-scale U-shaped pipe is measured with the same code, correlated with the surface roughness ratio. In the next stage, we studied a reduced scale model of a U-shaped heat pipe with experiment and analysis of the investigation into fluid-structure interaction (FSI). The material of the pipe was cut from the real heat pipe of a material named Inconel 690 alloy, now used in steam generators. The accelerations at the fixed stations on the outer surface of the pipe model are measured in the series of time history, and Fourier transformed to the frequency domain. The natural frequency of three leading modes were traced from the FFT data, and compared with the result of a numerical analysis for unsteady, incompressible flow. The corresponding mode shapes and maximum displacement are obtained numerically from the FSI simulation with the coupling of the commercial codes, ANSYS-FLUENT and TRANSIENT_STRUCTURAL. The primary frequencies for the model system consist of three parts: structural vibration, BPF(blade pass frequency) of pump, and fluid-structure interaction.

  • The operation of the natural circulation type solar heating systems with facade integrated collector was analyzed by experiment. Two different types of flat plate solar collectors were used for these experiments. One was for the normal flat plate solar collector with the size of 1m*2m and the other was for the large size solar collector with $4m^2$(1m*4m). The experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of the series or parallel connection method on the performance of the collectors. As a result, the solar thermal system which is installed on the wall or facade would be applicable for the natural circulation type if the system design reflects various parameters, including collector connecting method(series or parallel), to provide enough vertical height between collector and storage tank, and to reduce pressure loss due to collector and piping network, etc. The natural circulation type of solar thermal system as proposed in this study can increase the system reliability by removing or minimizing the use of the components such as pump, controller, sensors which may cause serious troubles of the system for a long-time operation

  • The evaporation heat transfer coefficient for R-l34a, R-407C (a mixture of 23wt% R-32, 25 wt% R-125, and 52 wt% R-l34a) and R-410A (a mixture of 50 wt% R-32 and 50 wt% R-125) flowing in the oblong shell and plate heat exchanger were investigated experimentally in this study. Four vertical counterflow channels were formed in the exchanger by four plates of commercial geometry with a corrugated sinusoid shape of a chevron angle of 45 degree. The effects of the mean vapor quality, mass flux, heat flux, and saturation temperature of different refrigerants on the evaporation heat transfer were explored in detail. Similar to the case of a Plate heat exchanger, even at a very low Reynolds number, the flow in the oblong shell and plate heat exchanger remains turbulent. It is found that the evaporation heat transfer coefficient in the plates is much higher than that in circular pipes. The present data show that the evaporation heat transfer coefficients of all refrigerants increase with the vapor quality. At a higher mass flux h, is higher than for the entire range of the vapor quality. Raising the imposed wall heat flux was found to slightly improve h$_{r}$, while h$_{r}$ is found to be lower at a higher refrigerant saturation temperature. A comparison of the performance of the various refrigerants reveals that R-410A has the highest heat transfer performance followed by R-l34a, and R-407C had the lowest performance of the refrigerants tested. Based on the present data, empirical correlations of the evaporation heat transfer coefficient were proposed.sed.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of laminar syngas/air mixture with 10% hydrogen content impinging normally to a flat plate of cylinder. Effects of impinging distance, Reynolds number and equivalence ratio as major parameters on heat fluxes of stagnation point and radial direction were examined experimentally by the direct photos and data acquisitions from heat flux sensor. In this work, we could find the incurved flame behavior of line shaped inner top-flame in very closed distance between flat plate and burner exit, which has been not reported from general gas-fuels. There were 3 times of maximum and 2 times minimum heat flux of stagnation point with respect to the impinging distance for the investigation of Reynolds number and equivalence ratio effect. It was confirmed that the maximum heat flux of stagnation point in 1'st and 2'nd peaks increased with the increase of the Reynolds number due to the Nusselt number increment. There was a third maximum rise in the heat flux of stagnation point for larger separation distances and this phenomenon was different each for laminar and turbulent condition. The heat transfer characteristics between the stagnation and wall jet region in radial heat flux profiles was investigated by the averaged heat flux value. It has been observed that the values of averaged heat flux traced well with the characteristics of major parameters and the decreasing of averaged heat flux was coincided with the decreasing trend of adiabatic temperature in spite of the same flow condition, especially for impinging distance and equivalence ratio effects.

  • Numerical computations are performed to investigate the effect of pintle stroke on the performance of an internal pintle thruster. Results show that the thrust control ratio was less than 2% and the aerodynamic load ratio was 22% as the pintle stroke increased. The flow past the nozzle throat rapidly expanding because of the shape of the pintle, and a shock wave was generated. Particularly, at the pintle stroke distance of 4 and 5 mm, the shock wave hit the wall of the nozzle, results in peeling bubbles. Depending on the altitude, the thrust increased and the aerodynamic load decreased, but the difference was as small as 1.5%. In the presence of the bore, the reduction of the pintle tip area resulted in a decrease in aerodynamic load.

  • The influence of arrangement and length of discrete ribs on heat/mass transfer and friction loss is investigated. Mass transfer experiments are conducted to obtain the detailed local heat/mass transfer information on the ribbed wall. The aspect ratio (width/height) of the duct is 2.04 and the rib height is one tenth of the duct height, such that the ratio of the rib height to hydraulic diameter is 0.0743. The ratio of rib-to-rib distance to rib height is 10. The discrete ribs were made by dividing each continuous rib into 2, 3 or 5 pieces and attached periodically to the top and the bottom walls of the duct with a parallel orientation The combined effects of rib angle and length of the discrete ribs on heat/mass transfer ae considered for the rib angles $({\alpha})\;of\;90^{\circ}\;and\;45^{\circ}$. As the number of the discrete ribs increases, the uniformity of the heat/mass transfer distributions increases. For $(\alpha})=90^{\circ}$, the heat/mass transfer enhancement with the discrete ribs is remarkable, while the heat/mass transfer performances are slightly higher than that of the transverse continuous ribs due to the accompanied high friction loss penalty. For $(\alpha})=90^{\circ}$, the average heat/mass transfer coefficients and the heat/mass transfer performances decrease slightly with the discrete ribs compared to the case of the angled continuous ribs.

  • Liquid droplet impingement erosion (LDIE) is caused by the impact of high-velocity droplets entrained in steam or air on metal. The degradation caused by the LDIE has been experienced in steam turbine internals and high-velocity airplane components (particularly canopies). Recently, LDIE has also been observed in the pipelines of nuclear plants. LDIE among the pipelines occurs when two-phase steam experiences a high pressure drop (e.g., across an orifice in a line to the condenser). In 2011, a nuclear power plant in Korea experienced a steam leak caused by LDIE in a pipe through which a two-phase fluid was flowing. This paper describes a study on the design change of a pipe affected by LDIE in order to mitigate the damage. The design change has been reviewed in terms of fluid dynamics by using the FLUENT code.

  • Central venous catheterization is used to provide a large amount of fluid, total parenteral nutrition and to administer antitumor agents with few complications reported. We report an uncommon case of pleural effusion that occurred after central venous catheterization. In many cases, the mechanism for the pleural effusion after central venous catheterization occurs through an injury to the superior vena cava by the continuous mechanical force of the catheter tip, the flow of large amount of fluid and an osmotic injury to the wall of the vein. This case is somewhat different in that the central catheter was placed in an aberrant vessel resulting in the pleural effusion. A post-placement chest roentgenogram and the correct approach of catheterization are important for preventing this complication.

  • The hydrophones is mounted in many applications on a vibrating surface and functions as an underwater acoustic signal receiver without sensing the vibrations from the mounting surface. However, their performance is usually degraded by the interference of exterior noises such as acoustic cavitation in water stream, host structural vibration in the hull, and propeller motions. This paper describes the design and evaluation of a self noise suppressing hydrophones which shows very poor sensitivity to the external noises, first, effects of the external noise on the its receiver performance is simulated with finite element method(FEM). Second, the geometrical variations are implemented on the original structure that include additional air pockets and acoustic walls which work as acoustic shied or scatter of the noises. The results show that the effect of the external noise is the most significant when it is applied near to the bottom of the side wall of the hydrophones. The transverse noise induced by the outside water flow is isolated most effectively when a thin compliant (damping) layer combined with two air pockets is inserted to the circumference of the nose. Noise level is reduced about fifty nine percent of that of the original structure.
