This paper estimated the first-born effects on wage among wage and salary workers born in 1954 to 1973 with the 2003 KLIPS data set. The first-born effect on wage was estimated as 7.3% with the parsimoniously specified wage function using age and gender. Adding various variables as independent variables, the effects were estimated statistically insignificantly differently, the effect was estimated as 7.6% with adding education, tenure, marital status, father's education, the number of siblings, and health. The effect is not statistically significantly different from that of the parsimoniously specified wage function. We estimated the first-born effects of male, and female wage and salary workers separately. The first-born effects of male wage and salary workers were estimated as 5.9~8.8%. The first-born effects of female wage and salary workers were estimated as 8.8~9.9%.
Korean economy has contains many economic problems during past 2-3 years. One of these problems is unemployment rate rise rapidly. So Korean government has proposed many programs to deal specifically with male and female unemployment. But important things are not only administratoin's programs but also unemployed persons' reservation wage. Accordingly the purpose of this thesis is to analyze why reservation wages differ between male and female. The data we are going to use is the unemployment survey by researcher in 1998. By the result of the estimation of reservation wage functions, we are found two fact. The first is the principle of determinants reservation wage are different between male and female. In esimation of male reservation wage function, early wage and age, education level, unemployment period are very important determinants. But in esimation of female reservation wage function, early wage and education level, age, licence are very important determinants. The second is the reservation wage-setting mechanisms are different between male and fermale. Therefore we conclude that because Korean labor market is stratified labor market, reservation wage-setting mechanisms are much different by sex.
Using KRIVET's Graduates Economic Activities Survey for 2005, this article examines the relationship between university ranking and labor market outcome, with a focus on wage differentials existing between provincial and Seoul metropolitan area university graduates. According to the analysis results, the average monthly wage for provincial university graduates was 1,747.7 thousand Korean won, which is 11.5% lower than that for graduates of universities in the Seoul metropolitan area. School effects on individual wage were estimated to about 12.2% after applying Hierarchical Linear Model technique, which means that university explains only an insignificant part of the total variance in wage among graduates. After controlling for the selection bias, the ability difference between the two areas, by applying the Heckman type 2SLS wage function and Neumark wage differential decomposition technique, the wage gap resulting from the segregation was not identified. This implies that, to a significant extent, the wage gap between provincial and Seoul metropolitan university graduates is attributed to the difference in productivity among individual graduates, rather than to the wage segregation. Also, the estimated wage function by applying Quantile Regression technique indicates that there does not exist any significant wage segregation difference by wage quantile.
This study directly analyzes the wage distributions rather than indirectly looking at a few of their moments. It also investigates wage distributions using various descriptive and semi-parametric methods. The wage distributions of Korean manufacturing industries can in general be represented by three distinct forms, underdeveloped, advanced and the medium of the two. The discrepancies in these distribution forms are explained by differences in the labor-type distributions and their weights in the composition of wage distribution forms, and further clarified through various descriptive statistics based on them. However, the descriptive statistical analysis has a limit in that it shows mixed outcomes of different categoric variables. Then, this problem is resolved by applying a semi-parametric estimation of hazard function and the marginal effect evaluations of variable changes on estimated distributions not on the function. As a result of this marginal analysis, the common features and differences of categoric variables and their intensities of effects on distributions are revealed.
Nurses are medical personnel, who play a key role in supporting patient care, so it is important to supply them adequately in balance with ever increasing medical demand. But there appears severe shortage of nurses in some hospitals because of their uneven distribution, especially in small sized-hospitals and rural-hospitals. As nationwide distorted distribution of nurses in Korea is just like what monopsony model(a kind of market structure model) tells us, it is attempted to explain this situation of nurse labor market in Korea on the basis of monopsony model and presented in this paper. Specifically, determinants of nurse wage and the level of their relative employment were examined, and monopsony impact on their wage and the level of relative employment controlling those determinants were studied. Major results of this study arc as follows. The most important determinant of nurse wage level in this study was the wage level of a local community where each hospital located Hospital owner's characteristics an educational function of each hospital were also important factors. With these factor controlled, it was found that monopsony power of each hospital was negativel associated with nurse wage level as expected. 1% increase in monopsony power of hospital(measured by Herfindah-Hirschman Index) reduced nurse wage by $5,674{\sim}19,19$ won(in Korean currency). With regard to the level of relative employment, the most important determinant wa the capacity for supplying nurses of the local community. Again, hospital owner characteristics and educational function of each hospital were also important. With these factors controlled, it was found that monopsony power of each hospital was negative associated with the number of nurses per bed, as expected. 1% increase in monopsony power of each hospital(again measured by Herfindah-Hirschman Index) reduced the number of nurses per 100 bed as much as $0.46{\sim}0.67$. In conclusion. structural factors of nurse labor market influence the instability of nurse labor supply in Korea. Further consideration for these market structural characteristics needed for policy making related to nurse resource allocation.
This paper documents the recent changes in wage density and decomposes them. Middle group is found to have shrunk, one-third of which reflects the changes in worker composition. The rest mostly reflects insufficient supply response to the rising skill demand within jobs. The pattern is more pronounced among manufacturing, large and unionized firms, and production workers.
This study investigates the structural change of wage determination within internal labor market that have occurred around the financial crisis in 1997 by using the personnel data(1996~2000) of a Korean large firm. We take the effect of performance-based pay system to apply on wage determination of workers using Mincerian earnings function estimation. After introducing the annual salary system in the firm, we did not find the fact that the wage effect of seniority decreases, but we found the wage effect of relative evaluation ratings increases. Then, this study identifies the importance of the reward strategy of firm in Korean internal labor market. Finally, we have concluded that although the firm acknowledged the positive effects of performance-based HRM practices, we have not obtained enough evidence on the transformation into such practices because the seniority-based HRM has been traditionally prevalent in the Korean internal labor market.
This paper analysis the structure of Housing Consumption Expenditure of urban salary and wage-earners' households from 1982 to 1992 by employing Time-series. Data was based on " Annual report on the Family Income and Expenditure Survey" of the National Bureau of Statistic Planning Board, Republic of Korea. Percentile marginal-propensity to consume(MPC) and income elasticity of consumption expenditure are estimated by their socio-economic and demographic variables. The results are as follows: 1. The proportion of the expenditure for furniture and utensils and house mending has increased with the increase of income in urban salary and wage-earners' households, while fuel light and water charges and rents paid has decreased. 2.1) Engel Function by income group; MPC associated with rents paid and fuel light and water charges is higher in the lower income group than in the rest. The income elasticity estimates in rents paid and fuel light and water charges is less than 1 in all group while larger than 1 in furniture and utensils and house mending. 2) Engel Function by occupation of household head; The highest MPC in rents paid is associated with the sales profession. The income elasticity of fuel light and water charge is found be inelastic. The groups other than the sales group show irregular MPC. 3) Engel Function by family size; MPC in house mending and fuel light and water charge is increased while is decreased in rents paid in accordance with family size. The income elasticity of rents paid and fuel light and water charge is less than 1 in all groups while that of house mending and furniture and utensils is larger than 1. 4) Engel Function by age of housegold head; MPC in rents paid is decreased according to the age of housefold head. The income elasticity of rents paid and fuel light and water charge is less than 1 in all group while it is larger than 1.
As the IT labor captures an increasing proportion of the total labor, it is important to analyze the contribution of IT labor to national economy. Although there has been abundant research about the effect of IT investments, it is difficult to find a research about IT labor's economic contribution. Most prior studies on the effect of IT investment have focused on the effect of IT capital investment. This paper empirically explores whether and how IT labor makes contribution to Korean economy. And also this paper examines the economic contribution of IT experts and semi-experts in Korean industries over the 2000 to 2007 period, using production function framework and panel data set for 24 industries constructed from 'Input-Output table' and 'Research on Wage Structure Survey'. Based on the full sample of 120 observations, this study finds that a 1% increase in IT labor wage is associated with 0.042190% increase in added value. In the case of non-manufacturing industries on the sample of 50 observations, this study finds that a 1% increase in IT labor wage is associated with 0.074908% increase in added value. And in the case of IT experts (separated from IT semi-experts), this study finds that a 1% increase in IT expert's labor wage is associated with 0.013957% increase in added value of all industry. This study provides implication for policy makers and managers. The results suggests that non-manufacturing industries can capture further benefits by increasing investment in IT labor. Building on this study, future research should examine the impact of IT labor at a more detailed industry level and the firm level.
The purposes of this study were to explore the rural women's labor by measuring labor value economically. To achieve the purpose, this study applied four methods : replacement cost method individual function, replacement cost method generalist, opportunity cost method and shadow wage method. The results of this study were as follows: 1) Time used for agricultural work and household work by with women were 5.3 hours and 3.8 hours each. 2) According to the methods used, the amounts of valuing rural women's labor were varied and ranged from 23,000 won to 43,000 won per day. This study might help recognize the degree of rural women's labor contribution to the household income of farm households and improve the socio-economic status of rural women through showing the productivity of the rural women's labor.
