Productive Capacities, Structural Economic Vulnerability and Fiscal Space Volatility in Developing Countries

  • The current article has explored the effect of productive capacities (as defined by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) and of structural economic vulnerability (as defined by the United Nations) on fiscal space volatility in developing countries. It relies on the definition and measure of fiscal space proposed by Aizenman and Jinjarak (2010; 2011) and Aizenman et al. (2019). To compute the indicator of fiscal space and hence that of fiscal space volatility, fiscal space is considered as the ratio of outstanding public debt to the 'de facto tax base', the latter being the number of years of tax revenues needed for a country to repay its debt. Results based on a sample of 116 countries from 2000 to 2018 have revealed that the enhancement of productive capacities is associated with lower fiscal space volatility, while higher structural economic vulnerability heightens fiscal space volatility. On another note, highly vulnerable countries tend to experience a higher negative effect of productive capacities on fiscal space volatility than relatively less vulnerable countries.

  • This study conducted an experiment on the crowd walking speed, one of the factors for calculating the evacuation capacity of a building. The experiment was measured the crowd walking speed by factor of corridor width and Vulnerable People to Disaster. The result of experiment, it saw the decrease of crowd walking speed due to rate of Vulnerable People to Disaster. In the future, using this as basic data, it is considered that additional research is need to development Human Safetay Standards in Korea.

  • Detecting and assessing human-related risks is critical to improve the on-site safety condition and reduce the loss in lives, time and budget for construction industry. Recent research in neural science and psychology suggest inattentional blindness that caused by overload in working memory is the major cause of unexpected human related accidents. Due to the limitation of human mental workload, laborers are vulnerable to unexpected hazards while focusing on complicated and dangerous construction tasks. Therefore, detecting the risk perception abilities of workers could help to identify vulnerable individuals and reduce unexpected injuries. However, there are no available measurement approaches or devices capable of monitoring construction workers' mental conditions. The research proposed in this paper aims to develop such a measurement framework to evaluate hazards through monitoring electroencephalogram of labors. The research team developed a wearable safety monitoring helmet, which can collect the brain waves of users for analysis. A bispectrum approach has been developed in this paper to enrich the data source and improve accuracy.

Smart and Secure Point of Sale Framework with Threat Modeling and Formal Verification

  • Existing PoS (Point of Sale) based payment frameworks are vulnerable as the Payment Application's integrity in the smart phone and PoS are compromised, vulnerable to reverse engineering attacks. In addition to these existing PoS (Point of Sale) based payment frameworks do not perform point-to-point encryption and do not ensure communication security. We propose a Smart and Secure PoS (SSPoS) Framework which overcomes these attacks. Our proposed SSPoS framework ensures point-to-point encryption (P2PE), Application hardening and Application wrapping. SSPoS framework overcomes repackaging attacks. SSPoS framework has very less communication and computation cost. SSPoS framework also addresses Heartbleed vulnerability. SSPoS protocol is successfully verified using Burrows-Abadi-Needham (BAN) logic, so it ensures all the security properties. SSPoS is threat modeled and implemented successfully.

The Impacts of Climate Variability on Household Consumption: Evidence Based on Village Weather Data in Indonesia

  • This study investigates the impacts of long-term climate variability on household consumption in Indonesia, a country highly vulnerable to climate change. The analysis combines household survey data from nearly 5,998 families with satellite-derived weather data from NASA POWER spanning 30 years. We use the long-term variability in temperature and precipitation as a proxy for climate change. This study examines the impact of climate change which proceeds over the long term, unlike previous studies concerning one-off or short-term climate events. In addition, using satellite data enhances the accuracy of households' exposure to climate variability. The analysis finds that households in a village with higher temperature and precipitation variability significantly consume less food. This implies that households more exposed to climate change are at higher risk of malnutrition in developing countries. This study has a limitation that it cannot rule out the potential endogeneity of choosing a climate-vulnerable residential location due to economic poorness.

  • Purpose: This study aims to analyze the application of Industry 5.0 technologies to improve residential welfare, focusing on vulnerable groups such as the elderly and one-person households. Research design, data, and methodology: Through a literature review and SWOT analysis, it examines both the strengths and challenges of these technologies, which include AI, IoT, energy management solutions, and personalized systems. Results: The application of Industry 5.0 technologies in residential welfare offers opportunities for enhanced personalization, energy efficiency, and security, especially for vulnerable groups like the elderly and one-person households. However, challenges such as high costs, data privacy, infrastructure limitations, and technological inequality must be addressed to ensure equitable access and widespread adoption. Conclusions: The research identifies key areas for improvement, including data privacy, infrastructure limitations, and the need for equitable access to advanced housing solutions. By addressing these areas, the adoption of Industry 5.0 technologies can help create a more resilient, inclusive, and efficient residential welfare system for future generations.
