The abrasion behaviors of NR/BR blend vulcanizates were investigated using NR/BR = 100/0, 80/20, and 60/40 compounds. The abrasion test was performed using a laboratory abrasion tester (LAT) at slip angles of 1° and 7°. The size distributions of the wear particles and the abrasion rates were examined according to the rubber compositions and slip angles. The most abundant wear particles at the slip angle of 1° were sizes above 1,000 ㎛, irrespective of the rubber composition. The most abundant wear particles at 7° slip angle had sizes in the range of 212-500 ㎛, except for the NR = 100 sample. The wear particle size distribution shifted to a smaller size as the slip angle and BR content increased. The abrasion rate at 7° was much larger than that at 1° slip angle. Furthermore, the abrasion rate was notably increased by adding BR to NR.
Abrasion tests of model tire tread compounds (NR and NR/BR blend compounds) were performed at different slip angles (1° and 7°) using a laboratory abrasion tester. The abrasion behavior was investigated by analyzing the worn surface and wear particles. The abrasion spacing formed on the specimen worn at the large slip angle of 7° was significantly narrower than that at the small slip angle of 1°, while the abrasion depth for the specimen worn at 7° was lower than that at 1°. The abrasion spacing and depth tended to be narrower and lower, respectively, as the BR content increased. The abrasion patterns were clearly visible on the outside of the specimen for the slip angle of 1° but not for 7°. The wear particles had a rough surface and there were numerous micro-bumps. It was found that the crosslink density affected the abrasion patterns and morphologies of the wear particles.

More than 3 wt% of polycyclic aromatics (PCAs) in process oil is known to cause skin cancer. The criterion of distinguishing between low PCA oil and high PCA oil is based on 3 wt% of PCA. High PCA oil is called as a carcinogen like distillate aromatic extract (DAE). Low PCA oil is considered as safety oils like treated distillate aromatic extract (TDAE), mild extract solvate (MES), and paraffinic oil. Four types of process oils such as DAE, TDAE, MES, and paraffinic oil purified by solvent extraction and separation skills from SBR vulcanizates were measured by FT-IR techniques. The effects of rubber chemicals such as N-1,3-dimethylbutyl-N'-phenyl-p-phenylnenediamine (HPPD), polymerized 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,2-dihydroquinoline (TMDQ), paraffin wax as antidegradants, and processing aid like Structol 40MS on paraffinic oil from SBR vulcanizates were also studied. The type of low or high PCA was identified by the relative abundance of absorbance at the aromatic substitution patterns of 864, 810, and $754cm^{-1}$ and at the paraffinic or naphthenic pattern of $721cm^{-1}$.
A new piece of test equipment, the slurry wear tester (SWT), was proposed in this study to evaluate the wear behavior of rubber vulcanizate in environmental contact with slurry. Natural rubber (NR) and chloroprene rubber (CR) were chosen as the basic matrices to test the slurry wear. The fluids used to fill the chamber of the SWT were 35% HCl and NaCl solution. The Akron abrasion test was used for comparison with SWT. According to the results of the Akron abrasion test, CR vulcanizate abraded more rapidly than NR vulcanizate under same test condition. It was found that the hysteresis of rubber was key factor contribute to the wear behavior. However, the slurry wear rate of the NR and CR vulcanizates did not change significantly, even with changes in the concentration of acid and the immersion time in both HCl and NaCl solutions; the fluid decreased the friction between the abrasive paper and the specimen. It also reduced the heat generated from repeated deformation and wear debris at the surface of the SWT's abrasion arm. Thus, these phenomena affected the wear behavior of rubber vulcanizate and caused different results in the conventional Akron abrasion test. This outcome could have resulted in an incorrect analysis if the slurry wear behavior of the rubber vulcanizate was estimated by the conventional abrasion tests, which are operated under dry conditions.
Using solid state $^{13}C$ NMR, polybutadiene rubber vulcanizates were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed. In the filled conventional system of BR vulcanizate accelerated with TBBS, addition to the olefinic double bond and substitution in the $\alpha$ position to the double bond occurred simultaneously. Also the latter $\alpha$ substitution reaction was faster than the former addition reaction at initial reaction time. In addition, it was suggested that double bond-addition-polysulfide structures might be modified into 5-membered and 6-membered cyclic structures in overcure time. These chain modifications were correlated with the decrease in the chemical crosslink density in overcure time.

This paper addresses the practical problem of finding a useful strain energy function of the incompressible rubberlike materials. It examines methods by which the form of the functions are determined and shows how the selection of experimental data influences the resulting form of the functions. From this information, an optimal choice of the form of energy functions becomes possible. Phenomenological theories used in this paper are limited to elastic, incompressible material models. Due to the nature of the phenomenological methods, these theories are accurate only for the materials treated. However, they serve as a starting basis for the study of more complicated material behaviors.
This study was related with the effect of elevated temperature on the tensile strength of edge-cut samples. There was a different tensile strength behavior of uncut samples and pre-cut samples under different test temperatures. Tensile strength of uncut sample decreases with increasing test temperature. When pro-cut size(C) is larger than critical cut size($C_{cr}$), tensile strength or pre-cut specimen at $80^{\circ}C$ is higher than that of pre-cut specimen at room temperature (RT). Test specimens under $80^{\circ}C$ condition exhibited more secondary cracks at the crack tip region compared to room temperature conditions. However, secondary cracks of pre-cut specimens are not clearly developed at $110^{\circ}C$. Differences in tensile strength induced by different test temperature seem to be responsible for the strain-induced crystallization and micro-cracking patterns.
Influence of the filler composition ratio on cure characteristics and bound rubber content of the compounds and on physical properties of the vulcanizates were studied using both silica and carbon black-filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds with the total filler content of 80.0 phr. The bound rubber content increased slightly with increase of the silica content ratio. The viscosity also increased with increasing the silica content ratio, especially increased steeply after the silica content of 60.0 phr. The cure times obtained with a rheometer, t2, t40, and t90, are increased by increasing the silica content ratio and the cure rate decreased. The delta torque increased with the increased silica content ratio. Variation or the modulus with the silica content ratio showed a decreased trend though the delta torque increased. The tan ${\delta}$ at $60^{\circ}C$ decreased with increased of the silica content ratio.
Rubber reinforcing carbon black N330 was treated by physical activation under $CO_2$ to different degrees of burn-off. The mechanical properties indicating the reinforcement of SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) vulcanizates filled by activated carbon blacks, such as tensile strength, modulus at 300% strain and elongation at break were determined. During $CO_2$ activation of fresh carbon blacks, the development of microporous structure caused an increase of extremely large specific surface area and the porosity turned out to be an increasing function of the degree of burn-off. The tensile strength and modulus at 300% of activated carbon blacks filled rubber composites were improved at lower loading ratios of 20 and 30 phr, but decreased drastically after 30 phr, which is considered that it might be difficult to get a fully dispersed rubber mixture at higher loading ratios for fillers having very large specific surface areas. However, the Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness of SBR rubber composites having activated carbon black at 74% yield were improved at a large extent when compared to those having raw carbon black and increased significantly as a function of increasing loading ratio.
The ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) blends with acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) were prepared by mechanical mixing method. Mooney viscosity, cure behaviors, compression set and dynamic mechanical properties were subsequently examined. Dynamic characteristics of the entire blends determined from a Rheovibron generally showed two glass transitions (T'$_{g}$s), -43$^{\circ}C$ and -4$^{\circ}C$ for NBR and EPDM, respectively. The tan $\delta$ peak monotonically shifted toward the higher temperature with increasing NBR content. It was also found that the optimum cure time was significantly decreased with loading of NBR.
