The present study aims to evaluate the nonlinear and post-buckling behaviors of orthotropic graphene sheets exposed to end-shortening strain by implementing a semi-Galerkin technique, as a new approach. The nano-sheets are regarded to be on elastic foundations and different out-of-plane boundary conditions are considered for graphene sheets. In addition, nonlocal elasticity theory is employed to achieve the post-buckling behavior related to the nano-sheets. In the present study, first, out-of-plane deflection function is considered as the only displacement field in the proposed technique, which is hypothesized by an appropriate deflected form. Then, the exact nonlocal stress function is calculated through a complete solution of the von-Karman compatibility equation. In the next step, Galerkin's method is used to solve the unknown parameters considered in the proposed technique. In addition, three different scenarios, which are significantly different with respect to concept, are used to satisfy the natural in-plane boundary conditions and completely attain the stress function. Finally, the post-buckling behavior of thin graphene sheets are evaluated for all three different scenarios, and the impacts of boundary conditions, polymer substrate, and nonlocal parameter are examined in each scenario.
In this study, the nonlinear vibration analysis of the composite nanoplate is studied. The composite nanoplate is fabricated by the functional graded (FG) core and lipid face sheets. The material properties in the FG core vary in three directions. The Kelvin-Voigt model is used to study the viscoelastic effect of the lipid layers. By using the Von-Karman assumptions, the nonlinear differential equation of the vibration analysis of the composite nanoplate is obtained. The foundation of the system is modeled by the nonlinear Pasternak foundation. The Bubnov-Galerkin method and the multiple scale method are used to solve the nonlinear differential equation of the composite nanoplate. The free and force vibration analysis of the composite nanoplate are studied. A comparison between the presented results and the reported results is done and good achievement is obtained. The reported results are verified by the results which are obtained by the Runge-Kutta method. The effects of different parameters on the nonlinear vibration frequencies, the primary, the super harmonic and subharmonic resonance cases are investigated. This work will be useful to design the nanosensors with high biocompatibility.
The main objective of this paper is to study the axial buckling and post-buckling of geometrically imperfect single-layer graphene sheets (GSs) under in-plane loading in the theoretical framework of the nonlocal strain gradient theory. To begin with, a graphene sheet is modeled by a two-dimensional plate subjected to simply supported ends, and supposed to have a small initial curvature. Then according to the Hamilton's principle, the nonlinear governing equations are derived with the aid of the classical plate theory and the von-karman nonlinearity theory. Subsequently, for providing a more accurate physical assessment with respect to the influence of respective parameters on the mechanical performances, the approximate analytical solutions are acquired via using a two-step perturbation method. Finally, the authors perform a detailed parametric study based on the solutions, including geometric imperfection, nonlocal parameters, strain gradient parameters and wave mode numbers, and then reaching a significant conclusion that both the size-dependent effect and a geometrical imperfection can't be ignored in analyzing GSs.
This paper examines the thermal post-buckling behaviors of graphene-reinforced metal matrix composite (GRMMC) laminated cylindrical panels which possess in-plane negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) and rest on an elastic foundation. A panel consists of GRMMC layers of piece-wise varying graphene volume fractions to obtain functionally graded (FG) patterns. Based on the MD simulation results, the GRMMCs exhibit in-plane NPR as well as temperature-dependent material properties. The governing equations for the thermal post-buckling of panels are based on the Reddy's third order shear deformation shell theory. The von Karman nonlinear strain-displacement relationship and the elastic foundation are also included. The nonlinear partial differential equations for GRMMC laminated cylindrical panels are solved by means of a singular perturbation technique in associate with a two-step perturbation approach and in the solution process the boundary layer effect is considered. The results of numerical investigations reveal that the thermal post-buckling strength for (0/90)5T GRMMC laminated cylindrical panels can be enhanced with an FG-X pattern. The thermal post-buckling load-deflection curve of 6-layer (0/90/0)S and (0/90)3T panels of FG-X pattern are higher than those of 10-layer (0/90/0/90/0)S and (0/90)5T panels of FG-X pattern.
This research concentrates on the effects of distributions and volume fractions of carbon nanotubes (CNT) on the nonlinear bending behavior of deep cylindrical panels reinforced by functionally graded carbon nanotubes under thermo-mechanical loading, hitherto not reported in the literature. Assuming the effects of shear deformation and moderately high value of the radius-to-side ratio (R/a), based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and von Karman type of geometric nonlinearity, the governing system of equations is obtained. The analytical solution of field equations is carried out using the Ritz method together with the Newton-Raphson iterative scheme. The effects of radius-to-side ratio, temperature change, and boundary conditions on the nonlinear response of the functionally graded carbon nanotubes reinforced composite deep cylindrical panel (FG-CNTRC) are investigated. It is concluded that, among the five possible distribution patterns of CNT, FG-V CNTRC deep cylindrical panel is strongest with the highest bending moment and followed by UD, X, O, and Ʌ-ones. Also, considering the present deep cylindrical panel formulation increases the accuracy of the results. Hence, according to the noticeable amount of R/a in FG-CNTRC cylindrical panels, it is mandatory to apply strain-displacement relations of deep cylindrical panels for bending analysis of FG-CNTRC which certainly is desirable for industrial application.
The size-dependent nonlinear thermomechanical vibration analysis of pre- and post-buckled tapered two-directional functionally graded (2D-FG) microbeams is presented in this study. In the context of the modified couple stress theory, the formulations are derived based on the parabolic shear deformation beam theory and von Karman nonlinear strains. Different thermomechanical material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent and smoothly vary in both length and thickness directions using the power law and the physical neutral axis concept is employed. The nonlinear governing equations are derived using the Hamilton principle and the resulting variable coefficient equations of motion are solved using the differential quadrature method (DQM) and iterative Newton's method for clamped-clamped and simply supported boundary conditions. Comparison studies are presented to validate the derived model and solution procedure. The impacts of induced thermal moments, temperature power index, two gradient indices, nonuniform cross-section, and microstructure length scale parameter on the frequency-temperature configurations are explored for both clamped and simply supported microbeams.
This study explores the linear and nonlinear solutions of sigmoid functionally graded material (S-FGM) nanoplate with porous effects. A size-dependent numerical solution is established using the strain gradient theory and isogeometric finite element formulation. The nonlinear nonlocal strain gradient is developed based on the Reissner-Mindlin plate theory and the Von-Karman strain assumption. The sigmoid function is utilized to modify the classical functionally graded material to ensure the constituent volume distribution. Two different patterns of porosity distribution are investigated, viz. pattern A and pattern B, in which the porosities are symmetric and asymmetric varied across the plate's thickness, respectively. The nonlinear finite element governing equations are established for bending analysis of S-FGM nanoplates, and the Newton-Raphson iteration technique is derived from the nonlinear responses. The isogeometric finite element method is the most suitable numerical method because it can satisfy a higher-order derivative requirement of the nonlocal strain gradient theory. Several numerical results are presented to investigate the influences of porosity distributions, power indexes, aspect ratios, nonlocal and strain gradient parameters on the porous S-FGM nanoplate's linear and nonlinear bending responses.
The random vibration of saddle membrane structures under wind load is studied theoretically and experimentally. First, the nonlinear random vibration differential equations of saddle membrane structures under wind loads are established based on von Karman's large deflection theory, thin shell theory and potential flow theory. The probabilistic density function (PDF) and its corresponding statistical parameters of the displacement response of membrane structure are obtained by using the diffusion process theory and the Fokker Planck Kolmogorov equation method (FPK) to solve the equation. Furthermore, a wind tunnel test is carried out to obtain the displacement time history data of the test model under wind load, and the statistical characteristics of the displacement time history of the prototype model are obtained by similarity theory and probability statistics method. Finally, the rationality of the theoretical model is verified by comparing the experimental model with the theoretical model. The results show that the theoretical model agrees with the experimental model, and the random vibration response can be effectively reduced by increasing the initial pretension force and the rise-span ratio within a certain range. The research methods can provide a theoretical reference for the random vibration of the membrane structure, and also be the foundation of structural reliability of membrane structure based on wind-induced response.
Organic solar cells utilized natural polymers to convert solar energy to electricity. The demands for green energy production and less disposal of toxic materials make them one of the interesting candidates for replacing conventional solar cells. However, the different aspects of their properties including mechanical strength and stability are not well recognized. Therefore, in the present study, we aim to explore the chaotic responses of these organic solar cells. In doing so, a specific type of organic solar cell constructed from layers of material with different thicknesses is considered to obtain vibrational and chaotic responses under different boundaries and initial conditions. A square plate structure is examined with first-order shear deformation theory to acquire the displacement field in the laminated structure. The bounding between different layers is considered to be perfect with no sliding and separation. On the other hand, nonlocal elasticity theory is engaged in incorporating the structural effects of the organic material into calculations. Hamilton's principle is adopted to obtain governing equations with regard to boundary conditions and mechanical loadings. The extracted equations of motion were solved using the perturbation method and differential quadrature approach. The results demonstrated the significant effect of relative glass layer thickness on the chaotic behavior of the structure with higher relative thickness leading to less chaotic responses. Moreover, a comprehensive parameter study is presented to examine the effects of nonlocality and relative thicknesses on the natural frequency of square organic solar cell structure.
In this research, an approach combining a semi-analytical method and an analytical method is presented to investigate the static and dynamic post-buckling behavior of the sandwich functionally graded (FG) porous cylindrical shells exposed to external pressure. The sandwich cylindrical shell considered is composed of a viscoelastic core and two FG porous (FGP) face layers. The viscoelastic core is made of Kelvin-Voigt-type material. The material properties of the FG porous face layer are considered continuous through each face thickness according to a porosity coefficient and a volume fraction index. Two types of sandwich FG porous viscoelastic cylindrical shells named Type A and Type B are considered in the research. Type A shell has the porosity evenly distributed across the thickness direction, and Type B has the porosity unevenly distributes across the thickness direction. The FG face layers are considered in two cases: outside metal surface, inside ceramic surface (OMS-ICS), and inside metal surface, outside ceramic surface (IMS-OCS). According to Donnell shell theory, von-Karman equation, and Galerkin's method, a discretized nonlinear governing equation is derived for analyzing the behavior of the shells. The explicit expressions for static and dynamic critical buckling loading are thus developed. To study the dynamic buckling of the shells, the governing equation is examined via a numerical approach implementing the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. With a procedure presented by Budiansky-Roth, the critical load for dynamic post-buckling is obtained. The effects of various parameters, such as material and geometrical parameters, on the post-buckling behaviors are investigated.
