In this paper, the relationships between volumetric mixing ratio of rubber chip and physical and mechanical properties of wood/rubber composite panel was examined in order to investigate the mixture characteristics of wood and rubber chip. Because of the specific gravity of rubber differed from wood chip, physical properties of wood/rubber composite panel was shown very different values by mixing rate of chip element. Specific gravity in air-dry of composite panel was increased rapidly as volumetric percent of rubber chip was increased. Moisture content of composite panel was decreased as volumetric percent of rubber chip element was increased. This results was considered that wood weight is light and porosity material for moisture absorption. Compressive strength and modulus of rupture in bending test were decreased as volumetric percent of rubber chip increased. By mixing ratio control of chip elements, various wood/rubber composite panel can be applicable to every interior materials such as subfloor, playground, and exterior materials such as road blocks for recreational facilities in garden and forest and city parks.
This study presents the results of a laboratory investigation performed to study physical properties of soil-bentonite mixtures through the vertical permeation test and dielectric measurement test using Frequency Domain Reflectometry system for the liner of waste landfill. For the laboratory experiments, geotechnical testing was conducted on pre-mixed soil-bentonite which is consisted of standard sand, weathered granite soil and bentonite for estimating physical parameters such as a volumetric water content, void ratio and dielectric constant. In experiment results, initial soil-bentonite mixing rate has an effect of change of volumetric water content. Also change of volumetric water content of a soil-bentonite mixture is clearly detected to measure a response of dielectric constant. In order to estimate an unsaturated permeable property of soil-bentonite mixtures, equations between volumetric water content and dielectric constant were derived from this study.

Engineered mixtures composed of rigid sand particles and soft rubber particles are tested to investigate their behavior with strain level. Mixtures are prepared with different volumetric sand fractions (sf) to identify response using small strain resonant column, intermediate strain oedometer, and large strain direct shear tests. The small strain shear modulus and damping ratio are determined with volumetric sand fractions. The asymmetric frequency response curve increases with decreasing sand fraction. Linear responses of shear strain and damping ratio with shear strain are observed at the mixture of sf=0.2. Vertical strain increases with decreasing sand fraction. Mixtures with $04.{\leq}sf{\leq}0.6$ show the transitional stress-deformation behavior from rubber-like to sand-like behavior. The friction angle increases with the sand fraction and no apparent peak strength is observed in mixture without sf=1.0.
As the structure of broken rock mass is complex, with obvious discontinuity and anisotropy, it is generally necessary to reinforce broken rock mass using grouting in underground construction. The purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate the mechanical properties of broken rock mass after grouting reinforcement with consideration of the characteristics of broken rock mass (i.e., degree of fragmentation and shape) and a range of reinforcement methods such as relative strength ratio between the broken rock mass and cement-based grout stone body (λ), and volumetric block proportion (VBP) representing the volumetric ratio of broken rock mass and the overall cement grout-broken rock mass mixture after the reinforcement. The experimental results show that the strength and deformation of the reinforced broken rock mass is largely determined by relative strength ratio (λ) and VBP. In addition, the enhancement in compressive strength by grouting is more obvious for broken rock mass with spherical shape under a relatively high strength ratio (e.g., λ=2.0), whereas the shape of rock mass has little influence when the strength ratio is low (e.g., λ=0.1). Importantly, the results indicate that columnar splitting failure and inclined shear failure are two typical failure modes of broken rock mass with grouting reinforcement.
This study was conducted to investigate the influence of hydrophilic polymer (HP) mixture ratio (Control, 1.0%, 2.5%, 5.0%, and 10.0%) on growth of eggplant (Solanum melongena) for lower maintenance urban agriculture via green roofs. Although it was not statistically significant (p > 0.05), substrate temperature was decreased as hydrophilic polymer mixture ratio were increased. High substrate water content (95%) was found consistently in growing media under elevated hydrophilic polymer mixture ratio at over 5% during the entire growing period. Substrate electronic conductivity was increased as hydrophilic polymer mixture ratio were increased. Growth index was decreased as hydrophilic polymer mixture ratio was increased. It was reduced about 1/3 and 1/5 compared to that of Control in HP5.0 and HP10.0 treatment plants, respectively. Number of leaves, leaf length, and leaf width were decreased in following order: Control> HP1.0> HP2.5> HP5.0> HP10.0 treatments. There numbers were significantly lower in HP5.0 and HP10.0 treatment plants. Dry weight of shoot and root were decreased as hydrophilic polymer mixture ratio was increased. They were reduced by 1/4 compared to those of Control treatment plants. In addition, visual value was decreased as hydrophilic polymer mixture ratio was increased. Plants grown in HP1.0, HP2.5, and HP5.0 treatments all survived. However, plants grown in the HP10.0 treatment had the lowest survival rate (56%) after 3 months of growing. These results indicate that the advantage of adding hydrophilic polymer to green roof growing media may greater during dry periods. However, the proper mixture proportion of hydrophilic polymer should be determined according to different characteristics of growing media and plant species.
Characteristics of the transesterification reaction between triglycerides in soy bean oil and methanol were investigated in the presence of acid catalysts. such as sulfuric acid and PTS (p-toluene sulfonic acid). Concentrations of diglyceride and monoglyceride which were intermediates in the reaction mixtures, were far below 10% of triglyceride under any reaction conditions. Thus, conversion of the reaction could be determined from the concentration of triglyceride. Dried PTS had more superior catalytic power than sulfuric acid for transesterification reaction between soy bean oil and methanol. When transesterification reaction of soy bean oil was catalyzed by 1 wt% of PTS at methanol stoichiometric mole ratio of 2 and $65^{\circ}C$, final conversion reached 95% within 48 hours. If FAME (fatty acid methyl ester) was added into reaction mixture of soy bean oil, methanol and PTS catalyst, it converted reaction mixture into homogeneous phase, and substantially increased reaction rate. When reaction mixture was freely boiling which had equal volumetric amount of FAME to soy bean oil, methanol stoichiometric mole ratio of 2 and 1 wt% of PTS, final conversion achieved value of 94% and temperature approached to $110^{\circ}C$ within 2 hours.
This study presents the thermal behaviors of glass beads-rubber mixtures depending on the volumetric fraction of each constituent and relative size between them. The transient plane source method is used to measure the effective thermal conductivity of mixtures. The discrete element method (DEM) and the thermal network model are integrated to investigate the particle-scale mechanism of heat transfer in granular packings. Results show that 1) the effective thermal conductivity decreases as the rubber fraction increases, and 2) the relative size between two solid particles dominates the spatial configuration of inter-particle contact condition that in tum determines the majority of heat propagation path through particle contacts. For the mixtures whose volumetric fraction of rubber is identical, the less conductive materials (e.g., rubber particles) with a large size facilitate heat transfer in granular materials. The experimental results and particle-scale observation highlight that the thermal conduction behavior is dominated not only by the volumetric fraction but also the spatial configuration of each constituent.
Anaerobic fermentation of food waste (FW) and waste activated sludge (WAS) for hydrogen production was performed in CSTR (Continuous Stirred tank reactor) under various HRTs and volumetric mixing ratio (V/V) of two substrates, FW and WAS. The specific hydrogen production potential of FW was higher than that of WAS. However, pH drop in the CSTR for hydrogen production from FW was higher than that from WAS. The maintenance of desired pH during fermentative hydrogen production is regarded as the most important operation parameter for the stable hydrogen production. Therefore, when the potential of hydrogen production from FW and better buffer capacity of WAS, the proper mixture of FW and WAS for fermentative hydrogen production were considered as a useful complementary substrate. The maximum yield of specific hydrogen production, 140 mL/g VSS, was found at HRT of 2 day and the volumetric mixing ratio of 20:80 (WAS : FW). The spatial distribution of hydrogen producing bacteria was observed in anaerobic fermentative reactor using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) method.
This paper presents the results of the effects on the inclusion of the pigment in the color asphalt mixture. The particle size of the pigment is extremely finer than that of the filler and should be reduced the amount of the filler used. It was found in the present practise that the total weight of 2% of the pigment in the weight of the total aggregate was used during the mix design. The extra inclusion of the pigment in the mixture increased the amount of the filler and affected on the volumetric properties such as void ratio and VMA. It has related with the performance and distress of the pavement and found that the mechanical properties have decreased.
