Velume Phase Transition of Poly (N-isopropylacrylamide-co-sodium methacrylate) Hydrogel Crosslinked with Poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (Poly(ethylene glyco1) diacrylate로 가교된 Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) Hydrogel의 부피 상전이 특성)

  • The volume phase transition of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) and poly (N-isopropylacrylamide-co-sodium methacrylate) (P (NIPAAm-co-SMA)) hydrogels crosslinked with poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) was investigated in consideration of water content and surface area. The volume phase transition temperature of hydrogel was not affected by the concentration of crosslinking agent, which increased over 40$\^{C}$ by incorporating a small amount of SMA. Higher volume phase transition temperature was obtained when PEGAD was used as a crosslinking agent, suggesting that the chain length of crosslinking agent had a significant effect on the volume phase transition temperature. The surface area of PNIPAAm and P (NIPAAm-co-SMA) gels fell off around the volume phase transition temperature, resulting from the fact that the size of pores reduced remarkably in the course of the volume phase transition. Hence, the surface area and the pore size were considered to be important factors indicating the volume phase transition.

  • Equilibrium swelling curves of N-isopropyl acrylamide(NIPA) gel and its ionized copolymer gels were obtained as a function of temperature. Discontinuous volume changes of the gels were observed. Phase transition temperature was increased with the ionized counter parts of the gels. Equilibrium swelling of ionized copolymer gel cylinder was found to depend strongly on their diameters. Crosslinking density of NIPA gel was adjusted by increasing N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide(BIS). Phase transition temperature was increased with the crosslinking density.

  • pH- and temperature-sensitive bifunctional hydrogels composed of N-isopropylacrylamide (NiPAAm) and a sulfadimethoxine monomer (SDM) derived from sulfadimethoxine were prepared. These hydrogels exhibit simultaneous pH- and temperature-induced volume-phase transitions. The pH-induced volume-phase transition behavior is produced by the ionization/deionization of SDM and is very sharp. In the high pH region, the ionization of SDM induces swelling of the hydrogels. In the low pH region, the deionization of SDM induces deswelling of the hydrogels. The temperature-induced volume-phase transition behavior of the bifunctional hydrogels exhibits negative thermosensitivity because of the NiPAAm component. The hydrogels swell even at low pH as the temperature decreases. The hydrogels swell at low temperature and high pH, and deswell at high temperature and low pH. The volume of the hydrogels dependl on the balance of the swelling and deswelling produced by the two competing stimuli, pH and temperature.

  • The PVT(pressure-volume-temperature) relation of main-chain dimer liquid crystals having structures such as $\alpha$,$\omega$-bis[(4,4`-cyanobiphenyl) oxy] alkane(CBA-n with=9, 10) were studied. these dimer liquid crystals are known to form an enantiotropic nematic mesophase. In this work, we have determined the volume change as a function of temperature and pressure by using a GNOMIX PVT apparatus. In the V-Tcurves obtaind from isobaris mearements on various pressures, volume changes were observed at the nematic-isotropiz and nematic-crystal phase transitions. The volume changes at the transition exhibit slight odd-even effect with respect to the number of methylene unit n. The values of the (S)v obtained at the NI transition for CBA-9 and -10 were 6.9 and 12.6J/mol k. The valuesof (S)v for the CN transition were estimated on the basis of DSC(differential scanning calorimetry) data: 58.8(CBA-9) and 65.3J/mol k (CBA-10). For both transition, it was found that the correction about the volume change is significant, ranging from 40% to 60% of the total transition entropy observed under constant pressure.

  • For rheology investigation of lubricating oils, first phase diagrams were made from determined free volume based on density measurements and the temperature-pressure relation was estimated using the expansion coefficient of free volume and the temperature-pressure relation of the viscoelastic transition point. Next, the authors proposed the density-pressure-temperature relation and the viscosity-pressure-temperature relation of the tested oils based on the free volume and the phase diagrams. Moreover, it was shown that the Ehrenfest equation or the gradient of the phase diagram is closely related to the expansion coefficient of free volume.

  • Novel microgels of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM)-co-methacrylic acid (MAA) (NIPAM-co-MAA) with different contents of N,N-methylene bis acrylamide (MBA) were prepared by emulsion polymerization technique and were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta potential measurement. Effect of pH, temperature and different salts concentration on the microgel particles was investigated. DLS results have shown that the hydrodynamic radius of the microgel increased upon increasing pH and decreased upon increasing temperature. The swelling/deswelling behaviors as determined by DLS showed the ionic repulsions of the carboxyl group of the methacrylic acid and hydrophobic interaction of NIPAM. The effect of various salts on volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) was also investigated. Upon increasing salt concentration, VPTT became broad and shifted to a lower temperature. Electrophoretic mobility measurements showed an increase with increasing pH and temperature at a constant ionic strength.

  • To understand the thermoresponsive volume phase transition of an N-isopropyl acrylamide(NIPA) gel on water, the solubility parameter of neutral NIPA gel was determined by swelling the gel with various solvents. Water was found not to be a good solvent for NIPA gel. Equilibrium swelling curves of NIPA gel were respectively obtained by immersing in pure water, ethanol, n-propanol and some mixed solvents. On adding a small amount of alcohols to water, volume phase transition of NIPA gel in water was changed. Phase transition temperature of this gel was decreased with the increase of the carbon number of alcohol.

  • Pure zirconia ceramic fiber experiences severe volume changes through thermal cyclings of heating and cooling. Zirconia fiber was doped with CaO to stabilize the phase and its effect of CaO was studied on volumetric ratio of each phases, phase transition temperature and microstructure. Tetragonal phase was increased as CaO increases up to 10 mol% and cubic phase was stabilized when CaO was added more than 10 mol%. The average grain size of zirconia fiber was increased as CaO increased and transition temperature was shifted to lower temperature.

  • The formation and transition of 2212 and 2223 phase have been studied in BPSCCO system. The 2212 phase formed in early sintering state reacts on $Ca_2PbO_4,\;Ca_2CuO_3$ and CuO during sintering process and thus produces the 2223 phase. A long sintering period is need to fabricate the superconductor with large volume fraction of 2223 phase. Also, the thin plate-like grains composed of Bi, Sr, Ca and Cu contribute to 2223 phase formation. Though the sample has lower volume fraction of 2223 phase, the critical temperature is measured highly in case of the grain grown to plate-like shape. In this work, the critical temperature of the sample sintered for 264 hr in air was measured 108 K. Microstructure of the sample was varied with condition of heat treatment after sintering process and the sample annealed with $500^{\circ}C$ for 5 hr showed excellent charateristics of 2223 phase formation.

Preparation of Porous Glasses by the Phase-separation of the Silicate Glass Containing $TiO_2$ ($TiO_2$를 함유한 규산염 유리의 상분리를 이용한 다공질 유리의 제조)

  • Microporous glasses in the system TiO2-SiO2-Al2O3-B2O3-CaO-Na2O were prepared by the phase-separation technique. Morphology and distribution of pore and specific surface area of glasses heated and leached out at various conditions were investigated by SEM and Porosimeter. Crystallization of glasses heated above transition temperature was also inspected by X-ray diffraction method. When the heating temperature and time increased, the pore size and volume increased, but the specific surface area decreased above the critical temperature. The phase-separation, specific surface area and pore size showed more sensitive change on the variation of heating temperature than of heating time. The specific surface area and micropore volume of porous glasses prepared in this study were about 120-330$m^2$/g and 0.001-0.01cc/g, respectively. Mean pore size of porous glasses were about 20-90$\AA$. Anatase phases was deposited when the parent glass was heat-treated at 75$0^{\circ}C$ for 6hrs.
