Plastic LCDs have remarkable advantages as compared to glass LCDs, but there still exist reliability issue. Regarding the reliability issue of plastic LCDs, we investigated the phenomena of dark spots that often occurred in plastic LCDs. It was recognized that dark spots are mainly caused by air bubbles that are induced from outside of LCD panel due to cell volume change with external stress and incomplete encapsulation. We have found that cell gap uniformity, spacer density and size and film deformation are important factors influencing dark spot behavior. In this paper, we discuss the phenomena and origin of dark spots in plastic LCDs
The effects of change in injection pressure on spray structure in high temperature and pressure field have been investigated. The analysis of liquid and vapor phases of injected fuel is important for emissions control of diesel engines. Therefore, this work examines the evaporating spray structure using a constant volume vessel. The injection pressure is selected as the experimental parameter, is changed from 22 MPa to 112 MPa using a high pressure injection system (ECD-U2). Also, we conducted simulation study by modified KIVA-II code. The results of simulation study are compared with experimental results. The images of liquid and vapor phase for free spray were simultaneously taken by exciplex fluorescence method. As experimental results, the vapor concentration of injected fuel is leaner due to the increase of atomization in the case of the high injection pressure than in that of the low injection pressure. The calculated results obtained by modified KIVA-II code show good agreements with experimental results.
This paper persents the crack control of mass concrete in massive machine foundation. The dimension of the machine foundation is 52.6m$\times$14.4m$\times$8.5m. The one distinctive characteristic of mass concrete is thermal behavior. Since the cement-water reaction is exothermic by nature, the temperature rises inside the massive concrete structure. When the heat is not quickly dissipated, it can be quite high. Significant tensile stresses may develop from the volume change associated with the increase of decrease of temperature within the mass concrete structure. To avoid occurrence of harmful cracks due to hydration heat, special attention shall be given to the construction of mass cnocrete structures. The temperature control system of mass concrete is proposed in this paper. This system contains a discussion of materials and concrete mix proportioning, thermal analysis, curing method, temperature control, and measurement of hydration heat. As will be seen throughout the paper, the proposed temperature control system have a great effect on the temperature-related cracks on mass concrete structures.
Miniaturized specimen technology is useful to characterize the mechanical behavior using a minimum volume of material, because it is almost impossible to sample the conventional specimen for the fracture toughness test without damage to equipment. Test material was 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel which was widely used for turbine rotor material. Two kinds of miniaturized impact specimens were prepared, i.e., miniaturized specimen with side groove and without side groove. The correlation between ductile brittle transition temperature(DBTT) of full size impact specimen and that of miniaturized impact specimen was made. The characteristics of miniaturized impact specimens technique as well as fracture stress were discussed. Finally, we concluded that the characteristics of fracture stress change on aging time were similar to that of DBTT.
In the current study, a new dynamic recrystallization model for predicting high temperature flow stress is developed based on a physical model and the mean field theory. In the model, the grain aggregate is assumed as a representative volume element to describe dynamic recrystallization. The flow stress and microstructure during dynamic recrystallization were calculated using three sub-models for work hardening, for nucleation and for growth. In the case of work hardening, a single parameter dislocation density model was used to calculate change of dislocation density and stress in the grains. For modeling nucleation, the nucleation criterion developed was based on the grain boundary bulge mechanism and a constant nucleation rate was assumed. Conventional rate theory was used for describing growth. The flow stress behavior of pure copper was investigated using the model and compared with experimental findings. Simulated results by cellular automata were used for validating the model.
The one-dimensional finite element program was developed to analyze the coupled behavior of heat, moisture, and air transfer in unsaturated porous media. By using this program, the simulation results were compared with those from the laboratory infiltration tests under isothermal condition and temperature gradient condition, respectively. The discrepancy of water uptake was found in the upper region of a bentonite sample under isothermal condition between numerical simulation and laboratory experiment. This indicated that air pressure was built up in the bentonite sample which could retard the infiltration velocity of liquid. In order to consider the swelling phenomena of compacted bentonite which cause the discrepancy of the distribution of water content and temperature, swelling and shrinkage factors were incorporated into the finite element formulation. It was found that these factors could be effective to represent the moisture diffusivity and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity due to volume change of bentonite sample.
In this study, an analysis of evaporative diesel spray and an usefulness of a general-purpose program, ANSYS CFX release 11.0, are investigated through the comparison and investigation of the experimental results carried out under an evaporative field, in which there is phase transition, by an exciplex fluorescence method and the results analyzed by the CFX program. The diesel fuel called n-Tridecane, $C_{13}H_{28}$, is injected from a single-hole nozzle (l/d=1.0mm/0.2mm) into a constant volume chamber under a high temperature and pressure. In the same condition as the experimental condition, the analysis was carried out. Both results of the spray tip penetration were almost coincident at each time. The results have validated the usefulness of this analysis. As a result, if the ambient pressure is high, the spray tip penetration will be shortened and move toward the nozzle exit.
This paper predicted the equivalent stiffness of spatially reinforced composites (SRC) using the volume average of a fiber rod and matrix stiffness, and the strength of SRC using the stiffness reduction and the modified Tsai-Wu composite failure theory. Those equivalent engineering constants are used to analyze the mechanical behavior and the failure of SRC structures. Because the distribution of equivalent engineering constants is varying with the change in SRC shape, we made a program that predicts engineering constants of SRC. Both 3-D and 4-D SRC show the smallest tensile modulus and the largest shear modulus at the maximum rotated direction from each rod. Also the strength properties show the same tendency.
In this study we report the results of ab initio first-principles calculations to investigate the possibility of metamagnetic behavior in Fe$_3$Al alloy. We used the WIEN2k package of full-potential linearized-augmented- plane-wave method within the local-spin-density approximation to the density-functional theory. The exchange-correlation functional is the generalized-gradient approximation of Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof. The theoretical lattice constant, which is about 0.5% smaller than the experimental one, is obtained by minimizing the total energy. If the volume decreases about 9 % from the equilibrium, the total magnetic moment decreases abruptly from 4.6 $\mu_{B}$/f.u. to 4.0 $\mu_{B}$/f.u. Since this change is considerably large (∼14%), it is possible to measure by a simple high-pressure experiment at about 180 kbar.
A geometric and material nonlinear finite element analysis is developed for the layered elastomeric bearings. In this study, a mixed variational approach with separate variables is used to describe the displacement and volume change of rubber. To represent finely deformed behavior, Kirchoff stress tensors are used and converted Eulerian stress tensors to describe real physical meanings. Newton's method is utilized to solve the governing nonlinear finite element equations. Numerical test are performed in the case of compression and shear to verify the theory and to illustrate the application of this analysis. And the results of this study were compared to the results of Moore's discrete finite element analysis.
