The effects of essential oils on pH, pathogens, and volatile fatty acids (VFA) in two poultry litters were investigated through a lab study. Essential oil-added poultry litters were randomly divided to two groups: control (200 g poultry litter) and Treatment (50 g thymol/Briefly, 200 g broiler litter was treated with or without 50 g thymol (Control and T1, respectively; 1 groups) and 200 g duck litter was treated with or without 50 g carvacrol (Control and T2, respectively; 2 group). Adding thymol to broiler litter increased the pH, reduced pathogens, and did not affect VFA. Interestingly, adding carvacrol slightly reduced the pH of duck litter, but had no significant effect on reducing pathogens and VFA. This difference is probably because the essential oil used and the properties of the two litters are different. In addition, pH was thought to control the odor generated from the litter, but this has not been proven. Further field studies should focus on clarifying this point.
Anaerobic decomposition experiments were performed to know the effect of chemical composition and temperature for the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from marine sinking particles. Sinking particles were obtained with sediment traps set in Aburatsubo Inlet, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, in February, May and August. Sinking particles collected in May were composed of higher fraction of chl. a than the other two months. February and May samples were used to perform the decomposition experiments. VFAs production rates were higher in May sample than February. The production rates increased with increase of incubation temperature, and order of production rates of four VFAs were acetate>n-butyrate>propionate>iso-butyrate at $10^{\circ}C\;and\;20^{\circ}C$. At $28^{\circ}C$, the production rate of propionate was higher than n-butyrate. Based on these results, it is considered that production of VFAs from sinking particles during anaerobic decomposition depends on the chemical composition and temperature.
This study was carried out to investigate the compositions of fatty acids, inorganic components and volatile organic acids from Korean valerian roots, Valeriana fauriei var. dasycarpa Hara and Valeriana officinalis var. latifolia Miq. The contents of total lipids ranged from 3.7 % to 4.5% and the major fatty acids were linoleic, linolenic and palmitic acid. Ash contents ranged from 4.3% to 6.3%. and the contents of Na, Fe, Zn and Cu showed some quantitative differences depending upon grown region or species. Fourty components were identified from acidic fraction of dichloromethane extract of V. fauriei var. dasycarpa Hara, of which the major components were 3-methyl butanoic, dimethoxy-2-propenoic. 3, 4-dimethoxy benzoic and 3-methyl pentanoic acid.
To enhance the utilization of garlic shoots as food material, the nutritional and volatile flavor com pounds were investigated for garlic shoots, both cold and warm region type garlic shoots. Proximate composition of cold and warm region type was as follows, respectively; crude protein 2%, crude lipid 0.4%, crude ash 1.1% and 1.5%, crude fiber 1.3% and 1.5%. The major fatty acids of 2 varieties of garlic shoots were linoleic, palmitic and linolenic acid, and their desaturation ratio of them was comparatively high, showing 73.7 and 66.8%, respectively. Free sugars were composed of glucose, sucrose, fructose, arabinose and sorbitol. In the total amino acid analysis, the major amino acids were glutamic acid and aspartic acid. The volatile flavor compounds of fresh garlic shoots extracted by hexane and Likens-Nikerson steam distillation apparatus were identified to be methyl-2-propenyl disulfide, diallyl disufide, propenyl propyl disulfide, di-2-propyl-trisulfide, 2-vinyl-1,3-dithiane, and 2-vinyl-4H-1,3-dithiin. Hexane was more effective than steam distillation for extraction of volatile components of garlic shoots.
We investigated the effects of sea urchin shell powder on 2 volatile fatty acids, acetic and butyric acid, in poultry litter. A total of 60 1-d-old male broiler chicks (Arbor Acres) were allocated to 2 treatments (basal diet and 1% sea urchin shell powder) with 3 replicates of 10 birds each. During the 4-week experimental period, significant differences in acetic acid and butyric acid concentrations were observed between treatments (P < 0.05), except for acetic acid at 1 week. Additions of 1% sea urchin shell powder resulted in lower acetic and butyric acid concentrations compared to the litter of control birds. We conclude that the sea urchin shell powder used in this study might prove beneficial in reducing environmental pollution caused by poultry litter.
The performance of a membrane-coupled anaerobic fermenter system for the recovery of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from liquid organic sludge was experimentally investigated. Permeation flux was stably kept around $0.2(m^3/m^2/day)$ during operational period. The membrane-coupled fermenter showed 2.2 times higher VFAs concentration and higher VFAs forming rate than those of fermenter without membrane. The fermenter with membrane proved to be an effective system for the recovery of soluble organic materials from liquid sludge.
This study was conducted to investigate the removal effect of malodorous substances of piggery wastes by air injection. With 7% of TS weight of artificial piggery wastes, this study focused on the changes of the concentration of VFAs, H2S during treatment period of 14 days. As a results of this study, air injection volume for removal of malodorants in this study was 150$m\ell$ / min$.$l$.$Under this condition, we found the concentrations of VFAs, H2S, NH3 have very high relationship with the pH, ORP, BOD, {{{{ { NH}`_{4 } ^{+ } }}-N. Especially, the concentration of Volatile Fatty Acids, one of most offensive odorants and one of BOD compounds were depended on ORP which can be controled by air injection in artificial piggery wastes.
Odors from manures are a major problem for livestock production. The most significant odorous compounds in animal manure a.e volatile fatty acids(VFAs). This work reviews the VFAs from the anaerobic sequencing biofilm batch reactor(ASBBR), anaerobic sequencing batch reactor(ASBR), solid compost batch reactor(SCBR), and aerobic sequencing batch reactor(SBR) associated with the animal manure biological treatment. First, we describe and quantify VFAs from animal manure biological treatment and discuss biofiltration for odor control. Then we review certain fundamentals aspects about Anaerobic and aerobic SBR, composting of animal manure, manure compost biofilter for odorous VFAs control, SBR for nitrogen removal, and ASBR for animal wastewater treatment systems considered important for the resource recovery and air quality. Finally, we present an overview for the future needs and current experience of the biological systems engineering for animal manure management and odor control.
In order to clarify the inhibitory effects of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) lipids on ruminal fermentation and digestion, two experiments were carried out in vitro. Experiment 1 was carried out using residues of grass hay from which the lipid fraction was removed by ether extraction. To ground grass samples were added 0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0% lipids and incubated anaerobically at $39^{\circ}C$ for 24 h, with the mixtures of artificial saliva and rumen fluid. Increasing grass lipid levels remarkably reduced DM and NDF disappearances. Volatile fatty acid concentration was significantly reduced at 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0% lipid levels. Microbial nitrogen proportion to total nitrogen tended to decrease by the addition of the lipids. These results indicated that grass lipids have a marked inhibitory effect on ruminal fermentation and digestion, especially when to the substrate was added 3% or more grass lipids as ether extracts. Experiment 2 was conducted to study the relationship between changes in the free fatty acids and changes in the fermentation traits. Samples were incubated for 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24 h as a sole substrate. The polyunsaturated fatty acids steadily decreased during incubation, whereas the saturated fatty acid ($C_{18:0}$) increased. It was suggested that the hydrogenation was extended during the initial stage of incubation. The unsaturated fatty acids ($C_{18:2}$, $C_{18:3}$) produced at the initial stage of incubation were negatively correlated with the amount of microbial N and DM disappearance, indicating that polyunsaturated fatty acids had the possibility to show an inhibiting effect on ruminal fermentation and digestion.
