Gel-like compounds containing flammable solvents were prepared to use fur cleaning agents in field of innovative industries and general purposes. And experiments were conducted to improve the defects of liquified flammable solvents from the view point of safety and health hazards. Flammable solvents used in this study were several single component flammable solvents(turpentine oil, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone(NMP), d-limonene) and multi component flammable solvent(gasoline and ethanol). For gelation of flammable solvents, commercially Known as Aerosil(equation omitted) 200 fumed silica and triethanolamine(TEA) were used as gelation agent dispersant. The analyses on properties of gel-like compounds was studied by gelation and viscosity test pH test, volatility test and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) measurement. The experimental results indicate that gel-like compounds containing flammable solvents have pH stability, high viscosity, volatile organic compounds(VOC) control by the decrease of volatility and odor component generation, fluidity control etc. From the experimental values, it can be predicted that the safety in the working place is improved by manufacturing flammable solvents into gel-like compounds.
When extracting semi-volatile components of herbal medicines using hot water vapor, some substances may react with water vapor or oxygen, and some volatile substances may be lost, when using an organic solvent extraction method has the disadvantage that it may contain a non-volatile material and residual organic solvent. In addition, it is inefficient to separate semi-volatile substances from herbal medicines into each single component and conduct biological activity research for each component to determine the effective ingredient, and some components may be lost in the separation process. In this study, semi-volatile substances evaporated under two pressure-reduced conditions in Chinese herbal medicines such as Cnidii Rhizoma, Aucklandiae Radix and Amomum Fructus were separated by cooling with liquid nitrogen. Those were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to identify the components, and this method may be used to study biological activities at the cellular level. The substances separated under reduced pressure, essential oil obtained by simultaneous distillation extraction (SDE) method and substances by using solid phase micro-extraction (SPME) from Cnidii Rhizoma, Aucklandiae Radix and Amomum Fructus were analyzed by GC-MS. In the case of Cnidii Rhizoma and Aucklandiae Radix, there were some differences among the essential oil components obtained by SDE and those identified by low temperature capture (CT) and SPME method, these were believed to be produced by some volatiles reacting with water or oxygen at the boiling point temperature of water.
Generally, the same quality tobacco may give similar concentration of each chemical component. This research investigation was studied to obtain the differences in concentrations of volatile oil compounds in physically similar tobacco produced in different environment and managements-in Korea and in the United States. The flue-cured leaf tobacco produced in Korea and America was regraded to B3L and P3L by American grading system and analyzed for volatile oils relating to tobacco flavor and aroma. Sixty compounds of the more than 100 peaks distinguishable on the total neutral volatile oils were identified by G5-MS and quantified. Their concentrations are compared between B3 L and P3L produced in Korea and in the United States. The most volatile oil concentrations of B3 L and P3L grade tobacco arc higher in American than in Korean. Only a few components such as benzaldehyde, pulegonc, 4, 6, 9 - megastigmatriene - 3 - one, and coumaran are less in American.
The volatile flavor components were isolated from the roots of Saussurea lappa C.B. Clarke produced in Korea and China by the hydro distillation, and were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). 63 aroma compounds representing 87.47% of the total peak area were tentatively identified, including 13 alcohols (22.56%), 26 hydrocarbons (21.78%), 4 aldehydes (21.24%), 11 ketones (18.04%), 1 oxide (0.52%), 3 esters (0.16%), 1 carboxylic acid (0.02%) and 4 miscellaneous components (3.15%). 46 volatile flavor components of imported S. lappa C.B. Clarke constituted 65.69% of the total volatile composition were tentatively characterized, consisting of 1 aldehyde (23.32%), 24 hydrocarbons (16.69%), 10 ketones (15.84%), 7 alcohols (8.92%), 1 oxide (0.83%), 2 esters (0.07%) and 1 acid (0.02%). The predominant components of both essential oils were (7Z,10Z,13Z)-7,10,13-hexadecatrienal and dehydrocostuslactone.
Korean cabbage, a member of the Brassicaceae family which also includes cauliflower, mustard, radish, and turnip plants, is a crucial leafy vegetable crop. Korean cabbage is harvested after completion of the leaf heading process and is often prepared for use in "baechu kimchi", a traditional Korean food. Many of the components in Korean cabbage are essential for proper human nutrition; these components can be divided into two groups: primary metabolites, which include carbohydrates, amino acids, fatty acids, and organic acids, and secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, carotenoids, sterols, phenolic acids, alkaloids, and glucosinolates (GSLs). Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, this study examined the variety of volatile compounds (including isothiocyanates) contained in Korean cabbage and its seed, which resulted in the identification of 16 and 12 volatile compounds, respectively. The primary volatile compound found in the cabbage was ethyl linoleolate (~23%), while 4,5-epithiovaleronitrile (~46%) was the primary volatile component in the seed.
To enhance the utilization of garlic shoots as food material, the nutritional and volatile flavor com pounds were investigated for garlic shoots, both cold and warm region type garlic shoots. Proximate composition of cold and warm region type was as follows, respectively; crude protein 2%, crude lipid 0.4%, crude ash 1.1% and 1.5%, crude fiber 1.3% and 1.5%. The major fatty acids of 2 varieties of garlic shoots were linoleic, palmitic and linolenic acid, and their desaturation ratio of them was comparatively high, showing 73.7 and 66.8%, respectively. Free sugars were composed of glucose, sucrose, fructose, arabinose and sorbitol. In the total amino acid analysis, the major amino acids were glutamic acid and aspartic acid. The volatile flavor compounds of fresh garlic shoots extracted by hexane and Likens-Nikerson steam distillation apparatus were identified to be methyl-2-propenyl disulfide, diallyl disufide, propenyl propyl disulfide, di-2-propyl-trisulfide, 2-vinyl-1,3-dithiane, and 2-vinyl-4H-1,3-dithiin. Hexane was more effective than steam distillation for extraction of volatile components of garlic shoots.
This work has been conducted to develop a method for the analysis of neutral volatile flavors and their precursors in tobacco. The neutral volatile compounds and precursors in tobaccos have been investigated by Neutral Volatile scan method(NV scan) using Soxhlet extractor. The method has been used to analyze a range of different tobaccos and tobacco products. Neutral flavor compounds were classified as three sections(1st Volatile Fraction, Breakdown Flavor Products and Cembranoid Precursors). The major components of the First Volatile Fraction were 2-cyclohexene-1-one, 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one, limonene and phenyl ethanol. The major components of Breakdown Flavor Products were isophorone, solanone, damascenone, 3-hydroxy-$\beta$-damascone, geranyl acetone, $\beta$-ionone, dihydroactinidiolide, norsolanadione, neophytadiene, hexahydrofarnesylacetone, farnesyl acetone and megastigmatrienone. The major cembranoid precursor compounds were dibutyl phthalate, duvatrenediols, 8,12-epoxy-14-labden-13-ol, 11-hydroperoxy-2,7,12(20)-cembratriene-4,6-diol, 12,15-epoxy-12,14-labadien-8-ol, 2,7,11-cembratrien-4,6-diol and 8,13-epoxy-14-labdien-12-ol. The NV scna results of tobacco types(flue-cured, burley and oriental) showed that each tobacco type has a characteristic flavor component profile.
Seasoning oils(SO) were manufactured by direct fire method(DFM) and autoclaving method(AM) using sunflower seed meal. The SO manufactured by DFM is stronger than that by AM for Lovibond color and flavor strength. The flavor strength of 2 kinds SOs were lower than sesame oil as a control group. But acid value of SOs were superior than sesame oil, 0.452, 0.463 and 1.987, respectively. The level of Lovibond color for 2 kinds of sample seasoning oil was similar. Composition and contents of total volatile flavor components were determined from their essential oils of sesame oil and 2 kinds sample seasoning oils. As a result, total volatile flavor contents of sesame oil was 1,300.6 ppm, and that of seasoning oil samples were 697.8 ppm, 648.2 ppm, respectively. Major volatile flavor components of seasoning oil were 2-butanone, hexanal, methyl pyrazine etc. In contrast, major volatile flavor component of sesame oil was pyrazines, but that was not a major component of 2 kinds of sample seasoning oils.
The volatile composition of veal has yet to be reported and is one of the important factors determining meat character and quality. To identify the most important aroma compounds in veal from Holstein bull calves fed one of three diets, samples were subjected to solid-phase microextraction (SPME) combined with gas chromatography-quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Most of the important odorants were aldehydes and alcohols. For group A (veal calves fed entirely on milk for 90 d before slaughter), the most abundant compound class was the aldehydes (52.231%), while that was alcohols (26.260%) in group C (veal calves fed starter diet for at least 60 d before slaughter). In both classes the absolute percentages of the volatile compounds in veal were different indicating that the veal diet significantly (p<0.05) affected headspace volatile composition in veal as determined by principal component analysis (PCA). Twenty three volatile compounds showed significance by using a partial least-squared discriminate analysis (PLS-DA) (VIP>1). The establishment of the global volatile signature of veal may be a useful tool to define the beef diet that improves the organoleptic characteristics of the meat and consequently impacts both its taste and economic value.
The antibacterial and insecticidal properties of ethanol extracts and volatile components extracted from Eugenia caryophyllata, Boswellia carerii, Agastache rugosa, Aristolochia contorta, and Aquilaria agallocha were evaluated. The ethanol extract and volatile component of E. caryophyllata showed strong antimicrobial effect against all strains (Mucor hiemalis, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium funiculosum, Trichodema viride) and the volatile component of B. carterii showed antimicrobial effect against all strains except T. viride. The ethanol extract of E. caryophyllata and A. contorta showed $100\%\;and\;32\%$ mortality against Reticulitermes spertus kyushuensis Morimoto for 48 hours and 72 hours, respectively. In the case of volatile component, R. aryophyllata showed $100\%\;and\;20\%$ mortality against R. spertus and Lyctus linearis GOZE, respectively. The main constitute, eugenol $(92\%)$ among nine components from volatile component of E. aryophyllata were identified as antibacterial active substance.
