  • Background and Objectives : Training of breath support and laryngeal muscles control are important components in the development of the singing voice. The purpose of this study is to compare characteristics of respiratory and phonatory control on pitch, loudness, register change with untrained males and trained male singers. Materials and Methods : The 11 untrained males and 11 trained male singers participated. Closed Quotient(CQ), fundamental frequency (fo) and relative volume contribution of the rib cage (in percentage rib cage, % RC) and relative volume contribution of abdomen (in percentage abdomen, % AB) were measured during various pitch, loudness, register tasks using /a/ vowel phonation : Legato, staccato with C3-D3-E3-F3-G3 notes and crescendo and decrescendo with C3 note as well as modal register with C3 and falsetto register with C4 note using an integrated analysis system of Respiration, EGG and Voice. Results : (1) When pitch increased with legato task, loudness also increased in untrained male group but maintained in trained male singers. CQ was also increased both untrained and trained male singers but it was not significantly different ($p>.05$). The abdomen contribution to lung volume were significantly predominant both in inhalation and exhalation in trained males singers ($p<.05$). (2) When pitch increased with staccato task, CQ was not significantly different in untrained but significantly different in trained male singers. The respiratory function of male singers were characterized by significantly predominant abdomen contribution to lung volume in exhalation except for inhalation ($p<.05$) (3) When loudness increased with crescendo, fo was significantly increased with increasing CQ in untrained males but fo was relatively consistent with increasing CQ in trained male singers. The respiratory function of male singers were characterized by significantly predominant abdomen contribution to lung volume in exhalation except for inhalation ($p<.05$). (4) Most male singers were able to change register from modal to falsetto register, but untrained males were not. Thus, CQ was significantly different between modal and falsetto register in trained male singers ($p<.05$). The respiratory function of male singers were characterized by significantly predominant abdomen contribution to lung volume in exhalation except for inhalation ($p<.05$). Conclusion : Male singers were superior to untrained males in coordination of respiratory and phonatory control on pitch, loudness, register change. Implication are offered regarding how the results might be applied to the voice therapy as well as singing training.

  • This study focused on the changes in the voices in determining the effects of speech training. This study aimed to make more visible and scientific evaluation of the changes in the voices among the substantial effects obtained from speech training. As a result, some objective differences from before the speech training could be found in the voice of every learner. Each learner showed gradual technical improvement in a variety of vocal elements, including resonance and timbre, accuracy of pronunciation, pause; that is, the voice became more powerful, more accurate pronounced, more pausing and more stable than before the speech training. This study determined if speech training could change a voice and the results are expected to help speech learners participate actively in speech training and see their speech ability improved.

  • IPTV and VoIP services are considered as killer applications over Mobile WiMAX network, which provideshigh mobility and data rate. Among those which affect the quality of voice in those services, the jitter buffer or playout buffer can compensate the poor voice quality caused by the packet drop due to frequent route change or differences among routes between service endpoints. In this paper, we analyze the correlation between the sleep interval length and jitter buffer size in order to guarantee a predefined level of voice quality. For this purpose, we present an end-to-end delay model considering additional delay incurred by the WiMAX PSC-II sleep mode and a VoIP service quality requirement based on the delay constraints. Through extensive simulation experiments, we also show that the increase of jitter buffer size may degrade the voice quality since it can introduce additional packet drop in the jitter buffer under WiMAX power saving mode.

  • In this paper, we carried out experiments to analyze influence of vocal cords according to changes of water temperature. We would like to particularly perform a study to design voice measurement system for significant extraction about vibration patterns of vocal cords according to temperature changes of water to drink. To this end, we measured elements value of voice analysis vibration of vocal cords to change, when drank, temperature difference of step 8 from $0^{\circ}C$ to $70^{\circ}C$ to $10^{\circ}C$ intervals. As a result of us experiment, when drank water of $30^{\circ}C{\sim}40^{\circ}C$, vibration of vocal cords stabilized and accuracy of pronunciation improved. We can analyzed that water of $30^{\circ}C{\sim}40^{\circ}C$ had a good effect in vocal cords.

  • As the basic analysis to solve the within-and cross-speaker variability in phoneme based speech recognition, changes in pitch and formant frequencies of 8 Korean vowels with age and sex of speaker has been investigated by analyzing a large number fo samples. Conclusions obtained are as follows: 1) Changes in pitch frequency with age and sex of speaker for children are hard to distinguish and the difference of before and after the voice change is analyzed approximately 0.2 oct. for female an 0.9 oct. for male. 2) While most of the formants of vowel considerably change with the age of speaker, the change becomes smaller as the age becomes older. 3) While there is an indirect correlation between pitch and formant with change in age, it is hard to see a direct correlation. 4) When the objects of the recognition experiment by pitch and formants are various speakers in each age and sex, pitch also works as an efficient recognition parameter.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify whether hearing a recording of mother's voice affected physiological reactions, behavioral state related to sleep and weight of very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. Methods: This was a nonequivalent control group pre-post test quasiexperimental design. The participants were 11 VLBW infants in the experimental group and 11 in the control group. In the experimental group, a recording of mother's voice was played to her infant by voice recorder four times each day for five minutes over 10 consecutive days in the incubator. Results: For physiological response (heart rate, respiration rate, oxygen saturation), there were statistically significant differences between the experimental and control groups. Behavioral state during sleep was more very quiet and quiet in the experimental group. In the daily weight change, there was no significant difference between the experimental and control groups. Conclusion: The findings suggest that, for VLBW infants, the intervention of hearing a recording of mother's voice had some significance as a nursing intervention having a positive impact. Such interventions can help pediatric nurses to stabilize the physiological response and maintenance more very quiet sleep state and improve VLBW infants' growth.
