  • This study investigated the correlation of physique factor( standing height, body weight, chest girth, body surface ) and vital capacity upon records of swimming discipline at sea water. The subjects are 194 sophomore students of Korea Maritime University who participated in the swimming discipline. The swimming records were divided into three groups - higher, middle and lower group. The results from this investigation are as follow ; 1. The standing height was above the average on the A, B+ record, body weight was above on the A+, A record, and vital capacity was above on the A+, A, B+, C record respectively. 2. The standing height, body weight, chest girth, body surface, vital capacity was significantly correlated between record P < 0.05 and P < 0.01. Therefore the higher record group has better physique factor and vital capacity than the middle or lower record group. 3. The standing higher of the higher record group was significantly correlated with body weight(0.514), body surface(0.768) and vital capacity(0.427), and body weight was significantly correlated with chest girth(0.525), body surface(0.940) and vital capacity. This standing heiht of the middle record group was sigificantly correlated with body weight(0.509) and body surface(0.779), and body weight was significantly orrelated with chest grith(0.618) and body surface(0.927). The standing height of the lower record group was significantly correlated with body weight(0.595), chest grith(0.363), body surface(0.802) and vital capacity(0.250), and body weight was significantly correlated with chest grith(0.678) and body surface(0.952).

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in the vital signs and anxiety reactions during scaling to patients who had received the dental hygiene treatment at department of Dental Hygiene in a university. A total of 189 patients were participated in the study. The level of anxiety was assessed through a dental anxiety questionnaire consisting of dental fear survey scale and dental anxiety survey scale. The vital signs were measured before and after scaling. The obtained results were as follows. The level of anxiety before scaling was 2.16 and after scaling was 1.96. This was significantly higher in women. The pulse and systolic blood pressure after scaling significantly decreased from 77.48 times to 74.36 times per minute and from 124.96 mmHg to 122.50 mmHg respectively. These changes are within the normal physiological variations. Individual changes in respiration, pulse, blood pressure, body temperature are affected by age, gender and previous dental experience, but previous scaling experience. The level of anxiety was significantly explained by respiration before scaling and pulse after scaling. As a result, scaling was associated with dental anxiety reactions and changes in vital signs.

  • Objectives : To research origin of the shape of vital gate(命門) in Yixuerunmen makes us understand more exactly what the author, Li Chan(李梴) thought vital gate shaped. Methods : It's shape described in his book was compared with pictures portraying it in Hua Tuo Xuan Men Nei Zhao Tu(華陀玄門內照圖), one of references of his book. Results : He reasonably modified its passing track, while explaining it according to the paintings in Hua Tuo Xuan Men Nei Zhao Tu. Vital gate, as he thought, was not an real organ like the other five viscera, but a cord or a tube similar to blood vessels. He believed its cord had long connections from pericardium to terminal of urethra, which went through pericardium upward, right kidney downward, right around terminal rectum down-frontward, and urethra in parallel outward. Conclusions : He had consistent understandings for vital gate to penetrate several different viewpoints, as based on pictures in Hua Tuo Xuan Men Nei Zhao Tu.

  • The purpose of this study is to present a method for determining the k most vital arcs in shortest path problem using an evolutionary algorithm. The problem of finding the k most vital arcs in shortest path problem is to find a set of k arcs whose simultaneous removal from the network causes the greatest increase in the total length of shortest path. Generally, the problem determining the k most vital arcs in shortest path problem has known as NP-hard. Therefore, in order to deal with the problem of real world the heuristic algorithm is needed. In this study we propose to the method of finding the k most vital arcs in shortest path problem using an evolutionary algorithm which known as the most efficient algorithm among heuristics. The method presented in this study is developed using the library of the evolutionary algorithm framework and then the performance of algorithm is analyzed through the computer experiment.

  • Objectives : This study was done to find the philological origin of the concept of pulse of the vital gate being assigned left or right according to sex distinction, and study its theoretical features that had been applied to clinical diagnosis. Methods : Medical books such as Maijue(脈訣), Leizheng Huorenshu(類證活人書), Maijuezhizhang(脈訣指掌), Yixuerumen(醫學入門), which directly mentions or having been considered to mention such concept of pulse of the vital gate, were inquired to find the philological origin of the concept. And after the philological origin was confirmed, combination between this concept and traditional pulse theory was also discussed. Results & Conclusions : The philological origin of the concept was confirmed as having the Taoist origin. In this study it was discussed through the contents of Xiyuedouxiansheng Xiuzhenzhinan(西嶽竇先生修眞指南). A term that is called 'the vital pulse(命脈)' appears in this book, and it could be said that the concept of 'the vital pulse' which is assigned on left or right according to sex distinction in the book like this had lead the pulse assignment of the vital gate into such a form that considers the sex distinction. After being accepted in medical theory, this concept also had been united with traditional pulse theory that appears in Nanjing(難經) and Maijing(脈經) to become a applicable theory in clinical diagnosis.

  • Purpose: To improve pulmonary function and decrease in balance ability with increasing forward head position and vertebral curvature, we applied Figure-8 brace to confirm the immediate effect on vital capacity and balance and to see if it is applicable. Methods: A total of 34 elderly women aged 65 or older and young women in their 20s with FHP were screened to measure vital capacity, measuring the forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC), and measuring the foot pressure to see the change in balance. For statistical analysis, the difference between pre and post values was compared using pared t-test. Results: As a result of vital capacity measurements, there was no significant difference between FEV1 and FVC for women over 65 years old (p>0.05). Young women in their 20s had no significant difference in FEV1 (p>0.05), and FVC had significant differences (p<0.05). In measuring foot pressure to measure balance, both women aged 65 and above and young women in their 20s had a significant decrease in anterior foot pressure, and a significant increase in posterior foot pressure (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study did not positively affect the vital capacity of elderly women with FHP. However, the significant increase in vital capacity of young women in their 20s suggests that contraction of the abdominal muscle is necessary during forced expiration. Therefore, it is believed that proper application and therapeutic interventions should be combined when applying Figure-8 brace.

  • PURPOSE : The 3rd molar extraction of mandible is common in out-patient office of oral and maxillofacial surgery. And it is dynamic minor operation with changes of vital signs. most of patients are already sensitive about their dental treatment. The changes of emotion are reached to the highest level when patients is laid down to be treated on unit chair. It can be induced to undesirable accidents as to this fear. The undesirable complications are nausea, vomiting, hyperventilation, dyspnea, syncope, shock and so on. The severe changes of vital signs may influence their behavior and make serious medical malpractice or suit such as fracture of dental instruments and injury of proximal area. METHOD AND PATIENTS : A total of 99 selected normal patients were reviewed. Among this, 70 patients(43 men, 27 women with statistical significance) were included in this study. Each steps(pre-anesthesis, 5 minutes after anesthesis, just after mucogingival incision, just after tooth section, just after suture and gauze biting) were investigated for a change of a vital signs. It is analyzed to 2 categories,"Means" and "Tendency". The "Means" is the amount of vital signs changed in comparison with pre-step during operation. That means is the amount of vital changes by each step operation. Next, " Tendency" is changes of vital signs in comparison with step1 during operation. RESULT : This is the changing tendency of vital signs with time. That is active effect of fear and pain. Thus this "Means" and "Tendency" will present a sudden changes of vital signs and it can lead to more safe treatment. CONCLUSION : Thus, the purpose of this study is, through careful operation in each step, to less on patients' complication and increase trust between patient and OMFS. This study is a first article shown with the amount of "Means" and "Tendency" in vital signs, when a third molar of mandible is extracted. This study will be base study of patients with general diseases, because it selected only patients without general diseases.
