  • The main purpose of this study is to obtain forest scenic beauty management informations toward forest working systems in pinus densiflora forest stands, etc. To get these information, visual preference and spatial image analysis methods are used. 25 different alternatives were simulated to visualize on basis of actual forest working methods with taken photos from May to July, 2003. The options were illustrated as photos produced by computer software. Respondents' ratings for 25 landscape scenes were obtained by interview survey method. Each alternatives were evaluated by forest major student group with total 103 respondents after reliability test. Visual preference evaluation was used 10 point rating scale. Spatial images of 12 alternatives were measured by 12 semantic differential scale. In general, the respondents preferred refreshing and ordering forest stand after forest working to natural forest stand before forest working. High visual preference for forest density produces 400-600 trees/ha in small diameter class forest stands. Regarding visual preference according to pavement type of trail, soil trail is ranked high. Visual preference for cutting area ranks mature forest stand and visual preference for trail slope cover type ranks shrub with grass as relatively high on the preference scale. Through the factor analysis, spatial images of 12 coniferous forest stands are classified as 'ordered opened' and 'beautiful healthy'. Results indicate how to conduct forest working systems for forest scenic beauty management.

  • Visual trope is one of the important appealing methods of creativity to induce voluntary consumer participation. In many cases, it delivers a message using metaphors. To define the concepts of_metaphor, we investigated methods of expression and significance of metaphor itself and associated forms; in all: metaphor, analogy, catachresis, metonymy, and synecdoche. We also considered the structure of each form to propose a method of metricizing the metaphor Consequently, we found that the metaphor of a visual trope is a type of operation and development of codes. We suggested models for each form type and concept of metaphor through the evaluation of metaphor significance and case study. Metaphor significance forms mutually close relationships with codes of pragmatics, semantics, and syntax. We suggested a type of metrics or a guideline for an expression method and evaluation of a visual trope appropriate for a metaphor form type. Therefore and importantly, the following study presents unique, but manifold results that are also useful in the field of design.

  • The recent rise of the three-dimensional television (3DTV) industry has led to a wide exploitation of the dual-lens stereoscopic camera. However, when the zoom-in function is used, it is possible that a camera object is magnified only with a fixed convergence point, thereby leading to visual discomfort. In this paper, we propose several methods based on which a convergence point can be adjusted to prevent visual discomfort during zoom-in for a dual-lens stereoscopic camera. Further, we produce 3D contents by applying the proposed methods to certain cases and at certain distances and conduct a subjective evaluation. On the subjective evaluation, 48 subjects watch the 3D contents created by the proposed methods and score the stages of the visual comfort. The result of the subjective evaluation shows that some of the proposed methods are more efficient than the others. We hope that these proposed high-efficiency methods can be applied to produce a dual-lens stereoscopic camera that allows convenient stereoscopic photography.

  • The purpose of this study is to recognize the differences of visual evaluation by variations in silhouette of the wide pants. The stimuli are 9 samples: One control group, 3 variations of the width of hem line and 3 variations of the silhouette. The data has been obtained from 57 fashion college students. The data has been analyzed by Factor Analysis, Anova, Scheffe's Test. The results of the study are as follows: The visual evaluation by silhouette of wide pants are composed of 5 factors(i.e., physical characteristics, complexity, attractiveness, originality, and stiffness and softness). Among these factors, the physical characteristic is evaluated to be the most important factor. The straight pants were the most attractive and modern when the width of the hem line was 66cm (1st stage), while the pants were uncomfortable and unwearable when the width of the hem line was 98cm (3rd stage). The bell-bottom pants were evaluated to be the most attractive with the average width of the hem line. When the width of the hem line of the flare pants were too wide, it was uncomfortable and unwearable but had its unique originality. When the width of the hem line was narrow, the visual image changed as the pants' silhouette varied. However, when the width of the hem line was wide, the visual image did not change by silhouette.

  • OBJECTIVES : This study develops an evaluation method, which is useful to inspect pavement condition of specific boroughs. This is because pavement condition is broadly divided into five grades via visual inspection, which does not consider the types of deteriorations, and is decided by an investigator having a subjective viewpoint. This visual inspection method is not a satisfactory method for accurate maintenance when various deteriorations occur. METHODS : The performance model considers several factors such as crack, rutting, and IRI. This method is also modified from borough SPI based on SPI (Seoul Pavement Index). Considering limited budget of borough, PI (prediction index) is suggested, which is related to the grade of pavement condition evaluation and type of materials. Practical correlation review is also conducted with statistical verification by using the Monte Carlo simulation. RESULTS : The results of the study show that modified criteria are reasonable. First, the comparison between the visual inspection result and the SPI result indicates that the R-square value is sufficiently high. Second, through the common section, each evaluation method could be compared, and the result shows considerable similarity, which increases when the range is modified. Finally, PI for predicting remaining life and the random number SPI have common parts, which means that each indicator would be adequate to be used as an evaluation method. CONCLUSIONS : Comparison and analysis results show that the developed evaluation method is reasonable for specific boroughs where financial support is inadequate for the evaluation process by using the newer equipment. Moreover, for more accurate evaluation method, previous visual inspection data should be utilized, and the database of inspection equipment have to be collected.

  • The purpose of this study is to recognize the differences of visual evaluation by variations in width of hem line and waistline position of the bell buttom pants. The stimuli are 9 samples: One control group, 3 variations of the width of hem line and 3 variations of the waistline position. The data has been obtained from 56 fashion students. The data has been analyzed by Factor Analysis, Anova, Scheffe's Test and the MCA method. The results of the study are as follows: The visual evaluation by the width of hem line and waistline position of bell buttom pants are composed of 5 factors : comfort, personality, physical characteristics, stiffness and modern. Among these factors, the comfort is evaluated to be the most important factor. As a visual evaluation result of changes in the width of hern line, 62cm in width (the narrowest width) was highly evaluated in comfort and stiffness factors, 78cm in width (the widest width) was highly evaluated in personality and physical characteristics factors. For the result of changes in the waistline position, high-waisted bell buttom pants were was highly evaluated in personality and stiffness factors, low-waisted bell buttom pants were was highly evaluated in comfort, physical characteristics and modern factors. The width of hem line and waistline position of the bell buttom pants interacted to the comfort factor. The width of hem line had more influence on visual evaluation in personality factors while physical characteristics, stiffness and modern factors were affected by the waistline position.

  • The purpose of this study was to approve the capability of human sensibility evaluation based on physiological responses and real-time subjective assessments. Three well-trained healthy human subjects were participated in the experiments. We measured physiological responses such as Heart Rate Variability(HRV), Galvanic Skin Response(GSR) and skin temperature under rest and visual stimulation conditions, respectively. Off-time subjective assessments were recorded before and after visual stimulations. Real-time subjective assessments were recorded during visual stimulations. The results of physiological responses and off-time and real-time subjective assessments were quantified and compared. The results showed that the correlation between physiological responses and real-time subjective assessments was high (83%) for both the positive and negative visual stimulation. The correlation between the physiological responses and off-time subjective assessments was high (83%) for the negative visual stimulation but was low (15%) for the positive visual stimulation. Although the current observation is preliminary and requires more careful experimental study, it appears that the correlation between real-time subjective assessment and physiological responses is higher than that of the off-time subjective assessment and physiological responses.

  • Previous research for visual assessment of streetscape employed static simulation methods to represent future landscape. However, streetscape is experienced sequentially, and thus dynamic simulations can be more effective. This study tried to adopt computer animation in the evaluation of streetscape, and examined its effects and possibilities. Three development scenarios for the redevelopment districts of Sokong-Ro and Banpo-Ro in Seoul were designed, and simulations were produced by three methods-photo-retouching, computer still image, and animation. A preference questionnaire was asked to 69 university students, and the effects of simulation methods on visual preference were examined. In addition, the frames of the animation were reclassed to identify the visibility of physical elements. The relationships between the visibility and visual preference were analyzed. The results showed that visual preference can be explained by three factors-Amenity, Tidiness, and Variousness-that account for 62.4% of the total variance, and the Amenity showed the highest proportion: 36.0%. Among the three simulation methods, animation showed the largest difference in preference for the most important factor(Amenity), and yielded the highest correlation between visibility of physical elements and Amenity. This result demonstrated that dynamic simulations can provide more accurate observation of visual changes, especially because the simulated landscape is experienced sequentially. The results also revealed that the sequential change in the visibility of physical elements can be examined easily and precisely by animation. This benefit of animation enables analysts to identify the points where the landscape varies the most, and thus visual preference should be evaluated.
