Stereo Image Quality Assessment Using Visual Attention and Distortion Predictors

  • Several metrics have been reported in the literature to assess stereo image quality, mostly based on visual attention or human visual sensitivity based distortion prediction with the help of disparity information, which do not consider the combined aspects of human visual processing. In this paper, visual attention and depth assisted stereo image quality assessment model (VAD-SIQAM) is devised that consists of three main components, i.e., stereo attention predictor (SAP), depth variation (DV), and stereo distortion predictor (SDP). Visual attention is modeled based on entropy and inverse contrast to detect regions or objects of interest/attention. Depth variation is fused into the attention probability to account for the amount of changed depth in distorted stereo images. Finally, the stereo distortion predictor is designed by integrating distortion probability, which is based on low-level human visual system (HVS), responses into actual attention probabilities. The results show that regions of attention are detected among the visually significant distortions in the stereo image pair. Drawbacks of human visual sensitivity based picture quality metrics are alleviated by integrating visual attention and depth information. We also show that positive correlation with ground-truth attention and depth maps are increased by up to 0.949 and 0.936 in terms of the Pearson and the Spearman correlation coefficients, respectively.

  • 도로의 곡선구간에서 운전자가 주행시 느끼는 인지곡선반경은 실제곡선반경과 상이하게 나타나는데, 이러한 현상을 시각왜곡현상이라 한다. 시각왜곡현상은 운전자에게 시각변화를 일으켜 운행속도에 영향을 미치고, 이로 인한 운행속도의 변화는 각운전자들의 인지정도 차이에 따라 운행속도의 편차에 영향을 주어 곡선부 주행안전에 악영향을 미친다. 그러나 현재까지 곡선부의 사고위험도를 증가시키는 시각왜곡현상을 정량적으로 분석하여 산정하거나, 시각왜곡현상을 고려해 도로 곡선부 설계시 이용될 설계기법에 대한 연구는 미비한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 도로 곡선부의 시각왜곡현상을 경험적 실험을 통한 분석을 실시하여 시각왜곡도를 정량적인 수치로 제시하였고, 곡선부 시각왜곡도를 고려한 설계기법을 제시하였다. 본 연구의 수행절차는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 설문조사를 실시하여 자료를 수집 활용하여 인지곡선반경을 종속변수로 하고, 기하구조를 독립변수로 하는 곡선부 인지곡선반경 모형식을 개발하였다. 둘째, 도로의 유형별로 인지곡선반경에 대한 실제곡선반경의 비율을 계산하여 곡선부 시각왜곡도를 산정하였다. 마지막으로, 곡선부 시각왜곡도 영향인자를 분석하여 이를 고려한 설계기법을 제시하였다.

Hybrid Block Coding of Medical Images Using the Characteristics of Human Visual System

  • The demand of image compression is increasing now for the integration of medical images into the hospital information system. Even though the quantitative distortion can be measured from the difference between original and reconstructed images, it doesn't include the nonlinear characteristics of human visual system. In this study, we have evaluated the nonlinear characteristics of human visual system and applied them to the compression of medical images. The distortion measures which reflect the characteristics of human visual system has been considered. This image compression procedure consists of coding scheme using JND (Just Noticeable Difference) curve, polynomial approximation and BTC (Block Truncation Coding). Results show that this method can be applied to CT images, scanned film images and other kinds of medical images with the compression ratio of 5-10:1 without any noticeable distortion.

Visible Distortion Predictors Based on Visual Attention in Color Images

  • An image attention model and its application to image quality assessment are discussed in this paper. The attention model is based on rarity quantification, which is related to self-information to attract the attention in an image. It is relatively simpler than the others but results in taking more consideration of global contrasts between a pixel and the whole image. The visual attention model is used to develop a local distortion predictor, named color visual differences predictor (CVDP), in color images in order to effectively detect luminance and color distortions.

Workflow for Anamorphic 3D Advertising based on Image Distortion

  • In producing anamorphic 3D advertisement projects, it is necessary to apply the principles of illusion art to distort the images output to the screen (Image Distortion) so that their display aligns with our visual perception in a real three-dimensional environment. We focuse on the methods of image distortion in the creation of content for anamorphic 3D advertisement screens in this thesis. We propose using Unity 3D's real-time rendering instead of the offline rendering method of compositing method, and employing UV grid mapping to replace the manual correction in Adobe After Effects(AE). The significance of this paper lies in simplifying the image distortion processing workflow in anamorphic 3D projects and optimizing the image distortion creation methods used in compositing method. In outdoor anamorphic 3D advertisement projects, the proposed image distortion creation method demonstrates significant advantages in terms of production time, process simplification, flexibility, and expansion possibilities. Our research provides new perspectives and methods for the creation of anamorphic 3D content, offering theoretical and methodological references for professionals working on similar contents.

곡선부 시각왜곡현상을 고려한 인지곡선반경 산정에 관한 연구 (Estimation of Perceived Curve Radius Considering Visual Distortion at Curve Sections)

  • 도로 곡선부에서는 운전자의 시각변화로 인해 속도변화가 크게 발생하여 직선부에 비해 상대적으로 사고심각도가 크게 나타난다. 특히, 곡선부에서 발생하는 위험요소 중 하나인 시각왜곡현상은 도로 기하구조에 따라 다르게 나타난다. 실제 곡선부 시각왜곡현상은 도로설계 시 반드시 고려되어야 하는 주요 설계요소임에도 불구하고, 이에 대한 정량적 설계기준 수립연구가 미흡한 실정이다. 이에 시각왜곡현상을 고려한 곡선부 도로 설계기준 수립이 절실히 요구되어진다. 본 연구에서는 곡선부 운전자 행태와 운전자 시각특성 및 인지곡선반경에 관한 선행 연구를 고찰하고, 지방부 2차로 곡선부 시각왜곡현상을 고려하여 수학적 기법을 적용한 이론적 인지곡선반경 모형식을 개발하였다. 또한, 이론적 인지곡선반경 모형식을 토대로 이론적 시각왜곡도를 산출한 후, 기존 연구의 경험적 시각왜곡도와 비교 분석을 통하여 이론적 인지곡선반경 모형식의 오차범위를 검증하였다. 그 결과, 이론적 인지곡선반경 모형식에서 실제 곡선반경이 증가할수록 오차범위가 감소하는 추세로 나타나 실제 도로 곡선부의 특성을 잘 반영하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과를 토대로, 향후 도로 곡선부 설계시 안전상의 결함을 사전에 제거함으로써 도로 곡선부 위험요소를 최소화하고, 인간공학적 도로설계기준 개발 향상에 이바지할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

웹 기반의 시각적 스트레스 증후군 선별에 관한 연구 (A Study of Web based Screening for Visual Stress Syndrome)

  • A visual stress may provoke migraine, cephalalgia, intervene a long term reading and learning capability and reduce the productivity of a laborer who uses computer for a good while. In this study, a web based screening tool for visual stress was developed, it applied to 72 visually normal young persons in parallel with traditional questionnaire about symptoms of visual stress. To estimate visual stress, It is proposed to measure difference of visual search time of Han Gul characters as targets between visual stressful pattern and non-visual stressful pattern as global background of characters. As a result of test, 5 subjects were screened whose mean visual search time in the stressful pattern with 6 CPD spatial frequency increase significantly more than in none stressful pattern(t-test, one-tailed, p=$1.0407\times10^{-11}$). 2 of them were diagnosed as mild visual stress syndrome in the clinic. None had visual distortion and 50% of subjects had visual discomfort in results of the questionnaire. Correlation between visual search time increase rate and normalized number of visual discomfort may be slight(C. coefficient=0.1355). This study may contribute as a basic research for screening person with migraine, visual reading disabilities and VDT syndrome. It is required to apply the test to visual reading disabilities, migraine with visual distortion and/or visual discomfort as well as normal person for higher reliability of the screening tool.

Distortion Variation Minimization in low-bit-rate Video Communication

  • A real-time frame-layer rate control algorithm with a token bucket traffic shaper is proposed for distortion variation minimization. The proposed rate control method uses a non-iterative optimization method for low computational complexity, and performs bit allocation at the frame level to minimize the average distortion over an entire sequence as well as variations in distortion between frames. The proposed algorithm does not produce time delay from encoding, and is suitable for real-time low-complexity video encoder. Experimental results indicate that the proposed control method provides better visual and PSNR performances than the existing rate control method.

  • Pipe inspection has a great importance to ensure safety for the nuclear power plant. In this paper, we designed visual inspection module for the tube internal, which diameter is 15${\sim}$20mm. And we made inspection module which consisted of CCD camera and light. And the relation between image and real world coordinate is established. Image processing is performed to calculate mapping parameter and analyze the size of defect. For the calculation of mapping parameter, experiment is performed using grid type test pattern. Acquired image is processed to extract image coordinate. Edge detection, thresholding, median filtering and morphology filtering is applied to extract grid pattern. Extracted image coordinate is used to calculate image to real world mapping. Lens distortion was considered and corrected to get exact data. Coordinate transformation data is provided for the users to recognize easily. Experiment was performed using grid type test pattern, we extracted lens distortion parameter and real coordinate of defect point. Radial distortion of lens was corrected but tangential distortion was not considered. As continuum to this study, the tangential distortion of lens is considered and improvement of analy zing technique for the tube internal be explored continuously.

어안렌즈왜곡 및 원근왜곡의 보정 (Correction of Fisheye Distortion and Perspective Distortion)

  • This paper considers the lens distortions such as a fisheye distortion and a perspective distortion. While a fisheye lens has a wide field-of-view, it causes a large distortion to the images. Regardless of a fisheye lens or a rectilinear lens, a lens generates perspective distortion in a vertical direction when the lens views in an upward direction or downward direction. These distortions deform images differently from human visual functions. Therefore, this paper presents a method to correct the distortions, and whereby, the research in this paper enlarges choices of images to image processing algorithm that may select the distorted images and the corrected images depending on applications. An infinite polynomial model is employed in the fisheye radial distortion correction, and the vertical perspective distortion correction is done by using a vanishing point. The methods introduced in this paper are implemented on the images captured by a rear-view camera installed on a vehicle and showed their robustness of the correction.
