  • Visible light communication (VLC) is a method of transmitting data through LED blinking and is vulnerable to eavesdropping because the illumination affects the wide range of area. IEEE standard 802.15.7 defines On-Off Keying (OOK), Variable Pulse Position Modulation (VPPM), and Color Shift Keying (CSK) as modulation. In this paper, we propose an encryption method in VPPM for secure communication. The VPPM uses an encoding method called 4B6B where 16 different outputs are represented with 6-bit. This paper extends the number of outputs to 20, to add complexity while not violating the 4B6B generation conditions. Then each entry in the extended 4B6B table is scrambled using vigenère cipher. The probability of decrypting each 6-bit data is $\frac{1}{20}$. Eavesdropper should perform $\sum\limits_{k=1}^{n}20^k$ number of different trials to decrypt the message if the number of keys is n. The proposed method can be applied to OOK of PHY II and CSK of PHY III. We further discuss the secure encoding that can be used in OOK and CSK without performance degradation.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel UE(User Equipment) position tracking algorithm of visible light signals, and analyze BER performance when optical beamforming scheme is applied in VLC(Visible Light Communications) system. The optical beamforming scheme as an interference mitigation method provides good optical channel conditions between UE(Rx) and LED light(Tx), and lead to better BER performance because UE is able to get a better RSSI(Received Signal strength indication) value. For the system BER, the proposed UE position tracking method for optical beamforming transmission demonstrates the performance enhancement compared to a system not applied the optical beamforming transmission scheme, and up to about 5~6dB SNR performance gain is achieved. The results of the paper can be applied to design of various VLC and LBS applications for ubiquitous home network systems.

  • A new technique, which can increase the channel bandwidth in an optical wireless orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) link based on a light emitting diode (LED), is proposed. The technique uses adaptive sampling to convert an OFDM signal to a sparse waveform. In compressive sensing (CS), a sparse signal that is sampled below the Nyquist/Shannon limit can be reconstructed successively with sufficient measurements. The data rate of the proposed CS-based visible light communication (VLC)-OFDM link increases from 30.72 Mb/s to 51.2 Mb/s showing an error vector magnitude (EVM) of 31 % at the quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) symbol.

  • Hawaiian textile art has inspired artists and fashion designers worldwide and accounts for the high value of vintage Hawaiian apparel as collectibles. Other than tropical designs, a large portion of the textile art showcased the ethnic diversity of Hawai'i. In the 1800s, Hawai'i attracted immigrants from all over Asia, and the majority of Hawaii's residents today claim Asian ethnicity. This ethnic mix was made visible in textiles, a trend championed by Alfred Shaheen, an apparel manufacturer who loved Asian designs. He was committed to the celebration of cultural diversity at a time when Hawai'i was rapidly westernizing. The team of Asian textile artists he led created textile designs based on motifs and imagery from Asia. Shaheen's passionate vision led to the unique textiles produced in the 'golden age' of Hawaiian textiles, from 1940 through the 1960s. Alfred Shaheen has been called "Hawaii's Master Printer" and has been credited for turning Hawaiian textiles into art. The author's interviews with Mr. Shaheen were conducted over a decade, and form the basis for this paper in which Shaheen's own words are used to discuss his use of textile art in the transformation of the Hawaiian textiles and garment industry.

  • Deep red EuSi2O2N2 phosphors were synthesized under various sintering gas pressures (1 atm, 2 atm, and 3 atm). They were in good agreement with the standard EuSi2O2N2 ICSD card # 41-6046 (a monoclinic crystal system with space group of P21/a). Their photoluminescence intensities were significantly increased with increasing the gas pressures. They showed a broad band emission peaking at 680 nm due to 4f65d1 - 4f7 of Eu2+ ion, which can be efficiently excited in the visible range up to 550 nm. The best one at 3 atm was applied for red LED based on blue chip, which showed the strong deep red emission.

  • In this study, nitrogen doped $TiO_2$ ($N-TiO_2$) coated on an activated carbon pellet (ACP) was prepared using sol-gel and the solid state heat treatment of urea to improve the removal property of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). To explore the visible light photocatalytic activity of the ACP under the light emitting diods (LED), the removal property of benzene gas was characterized by gas chromatography. The SEM and BET results show that the increment of titanium tetra isopropoxide contents leads to the increased $TiO_2$ coating amount of ACP surface and decreased specific surface area. From the results of benzene gas removal, the breakthrough time of ACP10 increased about 2 times compared to that of the ACP. The improved performance was attributed to the $N-TiO_2$ coating on ACP surface, which could be more effective to remove benzene gas under the condition of LED lamp.

  • The characteristics of aquatic light fields are generally reflected in the visual systems of fishes inhabiting them. Therefore, research on light sensitivity of fish is useful to explain the correlation between the visual function and habitat, behavior and distribution of fish. Rockfish is an important species in coastal ecology and also one of the main species for culturing in Korea. To make a contribution on the maintenance of the fish resources and understanding the ecology of the rockfish, the visual spectral sensitivities of the dark-adapted rockfishes were measured in the range of visible light (405~660 nm) using a light source of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In order to assess electrophysiological response of the fish, the ERGs (electroretinograms) of the dark-adapted rockfishes were recorded on a data logger (12 bits) and a laptop computer. Juvenile (n=5; weight: $20.3{\pm}5.2g$; total length: $10.3{\pm}0.7cm$) and adult (n=5; weight: $87.8{\pm}21.8g$; total length: $18.1{\pm}1.3cm$) rockfishes were used in experiment. The visual threshold of juvenile and adult rockfish were 11.66 (log quanta/$cm^2/s$) and 11.81 (log quanta/$cm^2/s$) in 574 nm, respectively. The peak wavelength of the spectral sensitivity in the dark-adapted juvenile and adult rockfish was commonly 551 nm (series of green color). Collectively, these results demonstrate that the rockfish has suitable visual capabilities for inhabiting coastal water in Korea.

  • Due to metallicity of materials, a vessel has a limitation to adopt RF-based wireless communication technologies for the inner communication means. Visible Light Communication(VLC) can be a sound alternative to dissolve such a limitation. Using a visual light as a transmission medium, VLC is free from radio interferences and restriction of radio usages which are typically related to RF-based wireless communications. In addition, VLC can not only require the facility cost relatively low because of being possibly converged with existing LED illumination, but also be harmless to the human body. This paper proposes an indoor location-based emergency call service system solution for ships using the VLC technology that supports 256Kbps data rate and 5m transmission distance. This paper presents real implementation and testing results of the solution which verifies the propriety of the proposal.

  • To improve the color gamut of a liquid-crystal display (LCD), we propose a bandpass filter that is added to the backlight unit to optimize the backlight spectrum. The bandpass filter can only transmit red, green and blue light in the visible range, while reflecting the unwanted light. We study the optical properties of the bandpass filter using the transfer-matrix method, and the effect of the bandpass filter on the color gamuts of LCDs is also investigated. When a bandpass filter based on a 5-layer configuration comprising low and high refractive indices ((HL)2H) is used in phosphor-converted white-light-emitting diode (pc-WLED), K2SiF6:Mn4+ (KSF-LED), and quantum-dot (QD) backlights, the color gamuts of the LCDs improve from 72% to 95.3% of NTSC, from 92% to 106.7% of NTSC, and from 104.3% to 112.2% of NTSC respectively. When the incident angle of light increases to 30°, the color gamuts of LCDs with pc-WLED and KSF-LED backlights decrease by 2.9% and 1% respectively. For the QD backlight, the color gamut almost does not change. When the (HL)2H structure is coated on the diffusion film, the color gamut can be improved to 92.6% of NTSC (pc-WLED), 105.6% of NTSC (KSF-LED), and 111.9% of NTSC (QD). The diffusion film has no obvious effect on the color gamut. The results have an important potential application in wide-color-gamut LCDs.
