The compressive tests under impact conditions were performed to establish a design guide for impact damage tolerance. The composition of layup was selected for the real cases of composite aircraft structure. The energy level of visible of visible damage threshold was determined as 7 Joules. It was found that the normalized bending stiffnesses in the direction of closely fixed boundary affected the area of damage. Graphite/epoxy used in the tests exhibited 60% reduction in compression strength at the energy level of visible damage threshold. Wet-conditioned specimens represented 9% reduction in residual compressive strength in comparison with room temperature ambient specimens. In this study, a design factor of 2.1 was proposed for the low velocity impact damage.
This study aims to detecting and analyzing the defects of damaged carbon fiber reinforced composites after impacts, particularly focusing on barely visible impact damages. The impact test was progressed by a drop-weight machine and applied to introduce simulated damages on laminated composites used in aircrafts. Various nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques were applied to identify the defects on the specimens with different levels of impact energies. Based on the measurements data, the levels of the barely visible impacts, and the applicability and effectiveness of the detection methods were discussed. Generally, the results demonstrated that their inner damages contained bigger footprints than those on the surfaces. However, when the damage energy was low, it was found that the inner damage size could be smaller than those appeared on the surfaces.

A growth chamber fumigation was conducted to evaluate the ozone (O3) on the physiology of three hot pepper, Capsicum annuum L. cultivars, 'dabotab', 'buchon' and 'pochungchun'. Thirty-day old plants were exposed to O3 of 120 nl 1-1 in the chambers for 8 h d-1 for 3 days. Foliar damage due to O3 was different from the varieties, 'dabotab'was most sensitive to O3, 'pochungchun' was medium, and 'buchon' was resistant. Ozone symptom on the leaves was bifacial necorsis. Photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were decreased due to O3 treatment, but they were not much different from the variety. Decreases of net photosynthesis by O3 were 56%, 40% and 35% on 'dabotab', 'buchon' and 'pochungchun', respectively Decreases of stomatal conductance by O3 were 66%, 63%, and 50% on each varieties. Ozone closed the stomata and decrease net photosynthesis on hot peppers regardless of the variety. Light curves on the three varieties were showing similar patterns that O3 damage on net photosynthesis were started at the low levels of light with or without the visible injury, Assimilation-internal CO2 concentration curves of the three cultivars were not different due to the treatment. It means there was not significant biochemical damage Inside the leaves by O3. In conclusion, ozone closed the stomata and damaged light capturing system of the pepper leaves with or without the visible damage. Although visible damage of the leaves could be a good indicator of O3 resistance, the ecophysiological change by O3 were not proportional to the amout of visible injuries
Action of various wavelengths of visible light on ultraviolet-radiation damage to haploid yeast cells, Saccharomyces cerevisiae 23971, was studied. The results were obtained on the basis of the survival and respiration rates by pre- and post-illuminations of various wavelengths before and after U.V.-irradiations on the yeast cells. Among the wavelengths tested, 635 $m{\mu}$, 429 $m{\mu}$ and white light which caused increase of respiration in pre-treatment alone, induced less resistance to the U. V.-damage than in the control, in both pre- and U.V.-treatment. On the contrary, such wavelengths as 574 $m{\mu}$and 530 $m{\mu}$, showing a weak effect on respiration in pre-treatment increased the susceptability to U.V.-radiation. Photoinactivation was generally obtained by both pre- and post- illuminations along with U.V.-treatment. At 635 $m{\mu}$ the PI rate was the lowest and also a low PI rate was shown at 429 $m{\mu}$. But 429 $m{\mu}$, in the post-treatment of the yeast cells pre-treated by the white light and the darkness respectively, showed the highest PI rate. In both pre- and post- treatment of 574, 530 and 473 $m{\mu}$,the PI rates were high to the same degree. Post-treatments of the wavelengths on U.V.-treated yeasts incubated rather under the white light than the darkness induced lower PI rate. It is assumed that there are great differences in action even of the same wavelength, depending upon the various combination of pre- and post-treatments, and that, moreover, the action of various wavelengths of visible light on U.V.-damage on the cells are concerned with the doses and dose rates of U.V. and visible lights. These observations led to an interpretation that each wavelength of visible light might exert distinctively different effects oil U. V.-damage, mainly causing the inhibition or stimulation of enzymes in the yeast cells.

After long exposure to low-density $SO_2$ the five tree species showed different changes in their visible damage: Ailanthus altissima showed no visible damage; Acanthopanax sessiliflorus, Populus alba ${\times}$ Populus glandulosa, and Platanus orientalis showed typical damage of yellow spots on their leaves; and Liriodendron tulipifera showed serious damage on the end of leaf tip. The photosynthesis rate of Liriodendron tulipifera and Acanthopanax sessiliflorus was usually lower than the control group: Ailanthus altissima, Populus alba ${\times}$ Populus glandulosa, and Platanus orientalis showed no difference from the control group, while Acanthopanax sessiliflorus and Liriodendron tulipifera showed large changes. In regard to the light compensation points, Ailanthus altissima showed similar values, Populus alba ${\times}$ Populus glandulosa and Platanus orientalis exposed to $SO_2$, showed 3 to $5{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ higher values than the control group, and Acanthopanax sessiliflorus and Liriodendron tulipifera exposed to $SO_2$ showed approximately twice higher light compensation points.
In this study, a cyclic tensile test on a notched butterfly specimen made of woven glass fiber composite was performed on a modified Arcan fixture. During the mechanical test, the sample was monitored with a hybrid stereoscopic system comprised of two visible lights and one infrared camera. The visible light cameras were employed for kinematic measurements using a finite-element-based multiview correlation technique. A semi-hybrid correlation approach was followed, providing Lagrangian temperature fields of the Region of Interest. Due to the complex composite architecture and specimen shape, localized shearing was observed during the tensile loading. Furthermore, asymmetrical damage developed around the notches as revealed by localized strains and thermal hot spots.
The paper describes the results of an experimental and numerical investigation into the structural and damage response of sandwich composites to low-velocity impact. Sandwich panels consisting of laminated composite skins with three different layups bonded to a PVC foam core were subjected to impact at various energy levels corresponding to barely visible impact damage (BVID) in the impacted skins. Damage assessment analyses were performed on the impacted panels to characterise the extent and the nature of the major failure mechanisms occurring in the skins. The data collected during the experimental analyses were finally used to assess the predictive capabilities of an FE tool recently developed by the authors for detailed simulation of impact damage in composite sandwich panels. Good agreement was observed between experimental results and model predictions in terms of structural response to impact, global extent of damage and typical features of individual damage mechanisms.

Natural draught cooling towers often develop visible crack structures as consequences of progressive damage processes over their life-time. The aim of this paper is a numerical demonstration of the progressive damage process of cooling towers, representatively for the reinforced concrete structures, in order to improve the durability and extend the life-time of structures subjected to such damage processes. For the analyses, the applied material model for reinforced concrete will be briefly introduced. An existing natural draught cooling tower with a pronounced crack structure, in which this crack structure indicates the typical damage pattern of large cooling towers will be numerically simulated. The change of dynamical behavior of the structure with regard to natural frequencies, reflecting the global damage process due to the degrading stiffness of the structure in dependence of the load type and intensity, will be presented and discussed.
Termites are a group of social insects that are one of the primary causes of damage to wooden architectural heritage. Since termite damage impairs the authenticity and structural stability of cultural heritage, it is imperative to prevent it. This study examines the extent of termite damage to wooden architectural heritage as part of efforts to prevent termite damage to nationally designated wooden architectural heritage sites across the country. The extent of termite damage to each cultural heritage was assessed qualitatively and quantitatively and comparatively analyzed by region using the results of the "Investigation on Biological Damage to Wooden Architectural Heritages" conducted by the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage from 2016 to 2019. It involved 362 nationally designated wooden architectural heritages(25 national treasures, 157 treasures, 180 national folklore cultural heritages) and 1,104 buildings. The results were as follows: termite detection dogs reacted at 317(87.6%) of the 362 wooden heritages, with visible termite damage observed in 185 cases(51.1%). Furthermore, termite damage was confirmed using one of two methods(detection dogs or visual inspection) in 324 cases(89.5%). Of the 1,104 buildings, termite detection dogs reacted at 668(60.5%), while 339(30.7%) showed visible termite damage. Employing one of the two methods, damage was confirmed in 702 buildings(63.6%). The country was categorized into nine regions(Seoul Metropolitan Area, Gangwon, Chungbuk, Chungnam, Jeonbuk, Jeonnam, Gyeongbuk, Gyeongnam, and Jeju) to examine the termite damage rate and the degree of damage to each cultural heritage according to location. Termite detection dogs reacted to more than 70% of the cultural heritage in all regions. Visible damage was minimal in the Seoul metropolitan area(32.1%) and Gangwon(21.4%) but severe in Chungnam(65.6%), Jeonnam(67.3%), and Gyeongnam(68.2%). By quantifying the degree of termite damage of each cultural heritage as a ratio of the absence of termite damage among the total absence, the average termite damage of the cultural heritage across the country was 9.2%. Regional variance analysis showed that the cultural heritage in Jeonbuk and Jeonnam showed a statistically significantly higher degree of termite damage than the cultural heritage in the Seoul metropolitan area, Chungbuk, and Gyeongbuk. This paper comprehensively analyzed termite damage to nationally designated wooden architectural heritage. The findings are expected to be valuable in establishing policies for the preservation and management of cultural heritage sites in the future.
We investigated the visible emission property of $SrTiO_3$ (STO) single crystals irradiated with gammy-ray (${\gamma}$-ray) at various total doses up to 900 kGy. The electric and optical absorption properties of the irradiated STO samples were hardly changed with the ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation, compared with those of un-irradiated STO. In contrast, the visible emission near 550 nm increased with the ${\gamma}$-ray dose increasing. While the development of the visible emission was indicative of the increase of oxygen vacancies inside STO by the ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation, the newly generated oxygen vacancies were not significantly harmful to the electric and optical properties of STO. We concluded that the STO single crystal should have a good tolerance against the damage by the ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation.
