Paint, fiber and dye which play a critcal role in proving the relationship between a suspect and a victim or a crime scene, are one of the most frequently encountered trace evidences at a forensic laboratory, however, in usual, because of infinitesimally small sizes of forensic samples, investigation of the spectroscopic characteristics of such samples is becomming more and more prevalent in forensic science as a non-destructive method. In this study, transmittance/reflectance profiles at ultraviolet-visible region (240-780nm), were investigated by UV/visible microspectro- photometer and used to analyze the spectral characteristics of different types of 14 microfibers, 12 inks of four colors and 44 automotive paints of two colors. Good results for discrimination were given from spectra of these samples due to the characteristic bands in uv/vis region, respectively.

In this paper, we proposed a portable electronic cardiogram and stethoscope (ECGS) that can simultaneously perform the electrocardiogram (ECG) and auscultation tests to increase the reliability of diagnosis of heart disease. To measure the ECG and heart sound (HS) at the same time, three ECG electrodes and a microphone sensor were combined into a triangular shape with a width of 90 mm and a height of 97 mm that can be held in one hand. In order to prevent skin problems when they contact the patient's skin, a capacitive coupled electrode was selected as the ECG electrode and a silicone material was used in a chest piece with the microphone sensor. For the signals measured from the electrodes and the chest piece, filters were respectively configured to pass only the signals of 0.01-100 Hz and 20-250 Hz, which are frequency bands for ECG and HS. The filtered ECG and HS analog signals were converted into digital signals and transmitted to a PC using wireless communication for monitoring them. The HS could be auscultated simultaneously using an earphone. The monitored ECG had an SNR of about 34 dB and a P-QRS-T waveform is clearly visible. In addition, the HS had an SNR of about 28 dB and both S1 and S2 are clearly visible. It is expected that it can aid doctors' inexperience in analyzing the ECG and HS.

Soybean has widely grown for its edible bean which has numerous uses. Microwave remote sensing has a great potential over the conventional remote sensing with the visible and infrared spectra due to its all-weather day-and-night imaging capabilities. In this investigation, a ground-based polarimetric scatterometer operating at multiple frequencies was used to continuously monitor the crop conditions of a soybean field. Polarimetric backscatter data at L, C, and X-bands were acquired every 10 minutes on the microwave observations at various soybean stages. The polarimetric scatterometer consists of a vector network analyzer, a microwave switch, radio frequency cables, power unit and a personal computer. The polarimetric scatterometer components were installed inside an air-conditioned shelter to maintain constant temperature and humidity during the data acquisition period. The backscattering coefficients were calculated from the measured data at incidence angle $40^{\circ}$ and full polarization (HH, VV, HV, VH) by applying the radar equation. The soybean growth data such as leaf area index (LAI), plant height, fresh and dry weight, vegetation water content and pod weight were measured periodically throughout the growth season. We measured the temporal variations of backscattering coefficients of the soybean crop at L, C, and X-bands during a soybean growth period. In the three bands, VV-polarized backscattering coefficients were higher than HH-polarized backscattering coefficients until mid-June, and thereafter HH-polarized backscattering coefficients were higher than VV-, HV-polarized back scattering coefficients. However, the cross-over stage (HH > VV) was different for each frequency: DOY 200 for L-band and DOY 210 for both C and X-bands. The temporal trend of the backscattering coefficients for all bands agreed with the soybean growth data such as LAI, dry weight and plant height; i.e., increased until about DOY 271 and decreased afterward. We plotted the relationship between the backscattering coefficients with three bands and soybean growth parameters. The growth parameters were highly correlated with HH-polarization at L-band (over r=0.92).
Physical properties, XRF, UV-Vis, FTIR studies were carried out in order to characterize gemological features of ruby from Tajikistan. Fluorescence reaction of the Tajikistan ruby to short wave ultraviolet was moderate to very strong in red and long wave ultraviolet rays was weakly detected. UV-visible analysis strong absorption bands at 468.5, 475, 476.5 nm and broaden bands at 550 nm were observed for ruby due to $Cr^{3+}$. According to FT-IR analysis, all rubies from Tajikistan showed the similar patterns and kaolinite peaks at 3500, 3617, 3630, $3677cm^{-1}$ and boehmite broaden absorption bands at 3085 and $3320cm^{-1}$. Inclusions in Tajikistan ruby are observed solid inclusions, negative crystals, needle and silk inclusions. These distinctive characteristics mentioned above can be used to identify the locality and source of ruby stones from Tajikistan.
Both lead molybdate ($PbMoO_4$) and chromium substituted lead molybdate ($PbMo_{1-x}Cr_xO_4$) were successfully synthesized using a conventional hydrothermal method and characterized by XRD, DRS, Raman, SEM and PL. We also investigated the photocatalytic activity of these materials for the decomposition of rhodamine B under UV-visible irradiation. The XRD and Raman results revealed the successful synthesis of well-crystallized $PbMoO_4$ crystals with the diameter of 51-59 nm, regardless of the addition of chromium ion. The DRS spectra of $PbMo_{1-x}Cr_xO_4$ catalysts showed new intensive absorption bands in the visible region. The $PbMoO_4$ catalysts showed the lowest photocatalytic activity and the activity increased with an increase of chromium substitution amounts under visible irradiation. PL peaks appeared at about 540-580 nm for all catalysts and excitonic PL signals were proportional to the photocatalytic activity for the decomposition of rhodamine B.
The sharp-line absorption spectrum of microcrystalline samples of cis-[Cr(cycb)$Cl_2$]Cl (cycb=rac-5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) has been measured between 13000 and $16000 cm^{-1}$ at temperatures down to 5K. The 77K emission and excitation spectra, and 298 K infrared and visible absorption spectra have also been measured. The nine electronic bands due to spin-allowed and spin-forbidden transitions were assigned. Using the observed transitions, a ligand field analysis has been performed to probe the ligand field properties of coordinated atoms in the title chromium(III) complex. The zero-phonon line in the sharp-line absorption spectrum splits into two components by $240 cm^{-1}$ , and the $large ^2$$_E{g}$ splitting can be reproduced by the modem ligand field theory. It is confirmed that nitrogen atoms of the macrocyclic cycb ligand have a strong $\sigma$-donor character, but chloride ligand has weak $\sigma$- nd $\pi$-donor properties toward chromium(III) ion.n.
Detection of red tides by satellite remote sensing can be done either by detecting enhanced level of chlorophyll pigment or by detecting changes in the spectral composition of pixels. Using chlorophyll concentration, however, is not effective currently due to the facts: 1) Chlorophyll-a is a universal pigment of phytoplankton, and 2) no accurate algorithm for chlorophyll in case 2 water is available yet. Here, red band algorithm, classification and PCA (Principal Component Analysis) techniques were applied for detecting patches of Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tides which occurred in Korean waters in 1995. This dinoflagellate species appears dark red due to the characteristic pigments absorbing lights in the blue and green wavelength most effectively. In the satellite image, the brightness of red tide pixels in all the three visible bands were low making the detection difficult. Red band algorithm is not good for detecting the red tide because of reflectance of suspended sediments. For supervised classification, selecting training area was difficult, while unsupervised classification was not effective in delineating the patches from surrounding pixels. On the other hand, PCA gave a good qualitative discrimination on the distribution compared with actual observation.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Earth Observing System (EOS) Terra and Aqua satellites, launched in 1999 and 2002, is directly received by Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) ground station facility. BURI engineers develop a system to receive direct broadcast downlink from MODIS to provide near-realtime, remotely-sensed, spaceborne data to the user community in Korea. MODIS scans a swath width of 2330 km that is sufficiently wide to cover Korean peninsular, Yellow and East Sea at once. The MODIS has 36 spectral bands between 0.415 fm and 14.235 $\mu$m, i.e. through the visible into the thermal infrared. MODIS has been observed active fires, floods, smoke transport, dust storms, severe storms since February of 2000. The KARI is preparing for distribution of direct broadcasted MODIS data to users in Korea. The MODIS database system will be designed and developed by KARI engineer for data service from year of 2003. MODIS data user group will be organized from $\.{O}$ctober to December 2002.
In order to retrieve the latent and sensible heat fluxes, high-resolution airborne imageries with visible, near infrared, and thermal infrared bands and ground-base meteorology measurements are utilized in this paper. The retrieval scheme is based on the balance of surface energy budget and momentum equations. There are three basic surface parameters including surface albedo $(\alpha)$, normalized difference vegetation index (NOVI) and surface kinetic temperature (TO). Lowtran 7 code is used to correct the atmosphere effect. The imageries were taken on 28 April and 5 May 2003. From the scattering plot of data set, we observed the extreme dry and wet pixels to derive the fitting of dry and wet controlled lines, respectively. Then the sensible heat and latent heat fluxes are derived from through a partitioning factor A. The retrieved latent and sensible heat fluxes are compared with in situ measurements, including eddy correlation and porometer measurements. It is shown that the retrieved fluxes from our scheme match with the measurements better than those derived from the S-SEBI model.
We propose a new method of masking cloud-affected pixels in satellite ocean color imageries such as of GLI. Those pixels, mostly found around cloud pixels or in scattered cloud area, have anomalous features in either in chlorophyll-a estimate or in water reflectance. This artifact is most likely caused by residual error of inter-band registration correction. Our method is to check the pixel-wise 'soundness' of the spectral water reflectance Rw retrieved after the atmospheric correction. First, we define two spectral ratio between water reflectance, IRR1 and IRR2, each defined as RW(B1)/RW (B3) RW (B3) and as RW (B2)/RW(B4) respectively, where $B1{\sim}B4$ stand for 4 consecutive visible bands. We show that an almost linear relation holds over log-scaled IRR1 and IRR2 for shipmeasured RW data of SeaBAM in situ data set and for GLI cloud-free Level 2 sub-scenes. The method we propose is to utilize this nature, identifying those pixels that show significant discrepancy from that relationship. We apply this method to ADEOS-II/GLI ocean color data to evaluate the performance over Level-2 data, which includes different water types such as case 1, turbid case 2 and coccolithophore bloom waters.
