  • In this paper, a design for a radio frequency(RF) and infrared(IR) absorber with metasurfaces is discussed in microwave frequency bands. The RF absorber includes double layers of metasurfaces to operate in S- and X-bands. Effects of sheet resistance of the metasurfaces and thicknesses of dielectric supporting layers on reflection responses are investigated. An IR stealth layer incorporates an array of conductive grids with slits to reflect IR signals but to transmit RF signals and visible rays. Periodicity of the grids and slits is studied for transmission responses in the X-band and a surface area ratio. Reflection responses of the RF/IR multispectral absorber are found to be lower than -10 dB and -16 dB in the S- and X-bands, respectively, from full-wave simulation. Finally, the RF/IR multispectral absorber is fabricated and its reflection responses are measured to verify designed performance.

  • Face recognition system has advanctage to automatically recognize a person without causing repulsion at deteciton process. However, the face recognition system has a drawback to show lower perfomance according to illumination variation unlike the other biometric systems using fingerprint and iris. Therefore, this paper proposed a robust face recogntion method against illumination varition by slective fusion technique using both visible and infrared faces based on fuzzy linear disciment analysis(fuzzy-LDA). In the first step, both the visible image and infrared image are divided into four bands using wavelet transform. In the second step, Euclidean distance is calculated at each subband. In the third step, recognition rate is determined at each subband using the Euclidean distance calculated in the second step. And then, weights are determined by considering the recognition rate of each band. Finally, a fusion face recognition is performed and robust recognition results are obtained.

  • This study investigates the prediction of soil OM on Korean soils using the Visible-Near Infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy. The ASD Field Spec Pro was used to acquire the reflectance of soil samples to visible to near-infrared radiation (350 to 2500 nm). A total of 503 soil samples from 61 Korean soil series were scanned using the instrument and OM was measured using the Walkley and Black method. For data analysis, the spectra were resampled from 500-2450 nm with 4 nm spacing and converted to the $1^{st}$ derivative of absorbance (log (1/R)). Partial least squares regression (PLSR) and regression rules model (Cubist) were applied to predict soil OM. Regression rules model estimates the target value by building conditional rules, and each rule contains a linear expression predicting OM from selected absorbance values. The regression rules model was shown to give a better prediction compared to PLSR. Although the prediction for Andisols had a larger error, soil order was not found to be useful in stratifying the prediction model. The stratification used by Cubist was mainly based on absorbance at wavelengths of 850 and 2320 nm, which corresponds to the organic absorption bands. These results showed that there could be more information on soil properties useful to classify or group OM data from Korean soils. In conclusion, this study shows it is possible to develop good prediction model of OM from Korean soils and provide data to reexamine the existing prediction models for more accurate prediction.

  • The objective of this study was to classify between radish and Chinese cabbage in autumn using hyperspectral images. The hyperspectral images were acquired by Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI) with 1m spatial resolution and 48 bands covering the visible and near infrared portions of the solar spectrum from 370 to 1044 nm with a bandwidth of 14 nm. An object-based technique is used for classification of radish and Chinese cabbage. It was found that the optimum parameter values for image segmentation were scale 400, shape 0.1, color 0.9, compactness 0.5 and smoothness 0.5. As a result, the overall accuracy of classification was 90.7 % and the kappa coefficient was 0.71. The hyperspectral images can be used to classify other crops with higher accuracy than radish and Chines cabbage because of their similar characteristic and growth time.

  • In this work, we investigated on the white-colored ribbon fiber synthesized from GaN powder. We convinced the formation of monoclinic phase $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$from the X-ray diffraction pattern on ribbon fiber. The 10 K PL spectrum consisted with the strong emission band caused by self-activated optical center at 3.464 eV with the full-width at half maximum of 48 meV and the impurity related emission bands. Through this work, the optical properties and the electrical conductivity of $\beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$, it will be useful for the fabrication of optoelctronic devices operating in visible spectrum region.

  • The Communication Ocean Meteorological Satellite (COMS) is a geostationary satellite being developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute. Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) is one of the payloads embarked on the COMS satellite. It acquires ocean images around Korea in 8 visible spectral bands with a spatial resolution of about 500 m. The acquired data are used to provide forecasting and now casting of the ocean state. The GOCI operations are controlled by the satellite embedded software, i.e. on-board software. This paper introduces the GOCI payload of the COMS satellite and describes the control software for the GOCI.

  • The visible vibronic emission spectrum was recorded from the corona discharge of precursor 1,2,3,4-tetramethylbenzene with a large amount of inert carrier gas helium using a pinhole-type glass nozzle coupled with corona excited supersonic expansion. The spectrum showed a series of vibronic bands in the $D_1{\rightarrow}D_0$ electronic transition of jet-cooled benzyl-type radicals formed from the precursor in a corona excitation. The analysis confirmed that two isomeric radicals, 2,3,4- and 2,3,6-trimethylbenzyl radicals, were produced as a result of removal of a hydrogen atom from the methyl group at different substitution positions. For each isomeric product, the electronic transition and a few vibrational mode frequencies were determined in the ground electronic state.

  • A hyperspectral imaging spectrometer has shown significant advantages in performance over other existing ones for remote sensing applications. It can collect hundreds of narrow, adjacent spectral bands for each image, which provides a wealth of information on unique spectral characteristics of objects. We have developed a compact hyperspectral imaging system that successively shows high spatial and spectral resolutions and fast data processing performance. In this paper, we present an overview of the hyperspectral imaging system including the strucure of geometrical optics and several image processing schemes such as wavelength calibration and noise reduction for image data on Visible and Near-Infrared(VNIR) and Shortwave-Infrared(SWIR) band.

  • Using a pinhole-type glass nozzle equipped for a corona-excited supersonic expansion (CESE), precursor 2,6-dichlorotoluene seeded in a large amount of inert carrier gas helium was discharged to produce jet-cooled but electronically excited benzyl-type radicals. The visible vibronic emission spectrum was recorded with a long-path monochromator to observe vibronic bands in the $D_1{\rightarrow}D_0$ electronic transition of benzyl-type radicals. The spectral analysis revealed the generation of not only the 2,6-dichlorobenzyl radical as a typical product, but also the o-chlorobenzyl radical as an unexpected species, which indicates the possible molecular rearrangement in eliminating a chlorine atom from the benzene ring. A possible mechanism is proposed for the formation of the o-chlorobenzyl radical from the precurs or in the gas phase.

  • The 77 K emission and excitation, and room-temperature visible spectra of cis[Cr(cyclam)Br$_2$]Br (cyclam=1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) are reported. The mid- and far-infrared spectra at room-temperature are also measured. The vibrational intervals of the electronic ground state are extracted from the far-infrared and emission spectra. The ten electronic bands due to spin-allowed and spin-forbidden transitions are assigned. It is found that nitrogen atoms of the cyclam ligand have strong $\sigma$-donor characters, but bromide ligand has weak $\sigma$- and $\pi$-donor properties toward chromium(III) ion. The zerophonon line in the excitation spectrum splits into two components by 172 cm$^{2-}$, and the large $^2E_g$ splitting can be reproduced by the ligand field theory.
