In this study, the torsional vibration analysis for a marine propulsion system is carried out by using the transfer matrix method(TMM). The torsional moment produced by gas pressure and reciprocating inertia force may yield severe torsional vibration problem in the shaft system which results in a damage of engine system. There are several ways to control the torsional vibration problem at hand, firstly natural frequencies can be changed by adjusting shaft dimensions and/or inertia quantities, secondly firing order and crank arrangement are modified to reduce excitation force, and finally lower the vibration energy by adopting torsional vibration damper. In this paper, the viscous torsional vibration damper is used for reducing the torsional vibration stresses of shaft system and it is conformed that optimum model of the viscous damper can be determined by selecting the geometric design parameters of damper and silicon oil viscosity.
An approximate analytical method has been developed for estimating hydrodynamic forces acting on oscillating inner cylinder in concentric annulus. When the rigid inner cylinder executes translational oscillation, fluid inertia and damping forces on the oscillating cylinder are generated by unsteady pressure and viscous skin friction. Considering the dynamic-characteristics of unsteady viscous flow and the added mass coefficient of inviscid fluid, these hydrodynamic forces including viscous effect are dramatically simplified and expressed in terms of oscillatory Reynolds number and the geometry of annular configuration. Thus, the viscous effect on the forces can be estimated very easily compared to an existing theory. The forces are calculated by two models developed for relatively high and low oscillatory Reynolds numbers. The model for low oscillatory Reynolds number is suitable for relatively high ratio of the penetration depth to annular space while the model for high oscillatory Reynolds number is applicable to the case of relatively low ratio. It is found that the transient ratio between two models is approximately 0.2~0.25 and the forcea are expressed in terms of oscillatory Reynolds number, explicity. The present results show good agreements with an existing numerical results, especially for high and low penetration ratios to annular gap.

Linear motion (LM) ball guides have good accuracy and high efficiency. They are widely applied for precision machinery such as machine tools, semiconductor fabrication machines and robots. However, friction force incurs heat between the balls and grooves. Thermal expansion due to the heat deteriorates stiffness and accuracy of the LM ball guides. For accurate estimation of stiffness and accuracy during the linear motion, friction models of LM ball guides are required. To formulate accurate frictional models of LM ball guides according to load and preload conditions, rolling and viscous frictional analyses have been performed in this paper. Contact loads between balls and grooves are derived from Hertzian contact analysis. Contact angle variation is incorporated for the precision modeling. Viscous friction model is formulated from the shear stress of lubricant and the contact area between balls and grooves. Experiments confirm validity of the developed friction model for various external load and feedrate conditions.
The optimal design for a leading car considering the aerodynamic resistance is required on the high-speed train due to increasing of ratio of drag force with proportion for the square of velocity. The aerodynamic analysis using CFD in the stage of concept design offers more economical analysis method which is used to estimate the influence of flow and pressure around the leading car than the experimental method using the Mock-up. In this study, we want to assist the artistic design with aerodynamics analysis in order to get the optimal design for leading car with the operation speed of 180km/h. The results of aerodynamic analysis for two leading car models which one is expressed with lineal beauty and the other is with curvaceous beauty are compared with each other and they offer the proposal of modification for two models in order to decrease the drag force. The shape of curvaceous model is better for the pressure force but slightly worse for the viscous force than the other. The Fluent software is used for the calculation of flow profile in this study.

Viscous fluid damper is used for vibration isolation of piping system, presses, turbo-generator and other heavy industrial equipments, as well as seismic isolation of buildings structure. So dynamic characteristic of viscous fluid damper is very important. This paper presents the result of the study of dynamic characteristic of viscous fluid damper. And the force-displacement relation of the viscous damper is described by experimentally calibrated fractional derivative Maxwell Model. The proposed model is validated by dynamic testing and A good agreement between predicted and experimental results is obtained.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the friction characteristics of piston assembly, which composed of ring pack and piston skirt. The friction force of piston assembly was measured by using the movable liner in the single cylinder engine, and the various parameters were tested. The friction force was suddenly increased at the expansion stroke due to higher cylinder pressure. The viscous friction was dominant at the mid stroke, but the boundary friction was dominant at the top and bottom dead centers. Through the experiment, we could validate previous theoretical study, and confirm that th e radial clearance and ring tension were very effective to reduce friction loss of piston assembly.

We consider influences of the aperture variation and the ambient groundwater flow on the migration of DNAPL within a fracture network. In context of a modified invasion percolation (MIP) growth algorithm, we formulate a mechanistic model that includes capillary and gravity forces as well as viscous forces within the DNAPL and the ambient groundwater. The MIP model is verified against laboratory experiments, which is conducted using a two-dimensional random fracture network model. The results show that the aperture variation and ambient groundwater flow can be significant factors controlling DNAPL migration path within fracture networks.

In this study, the dynamic instabilities of a nonlinear elastic system subjected to follower force are investigated. The two-degree-of-freedom double pendulum model with nonlinear geometry, cubic spring, and linear viscous damping is used for the study. The constant and periodic follower forces are considered. The chaotic nature of the system is identified using the standard methods, such as time histories, phase portraits, and Poincare maps, etc.. The responses are chaotic and unpredictable due to the sensitivity to initial conditions. The sensitivities to parameters, such as geometric initial imperfections, magnitude of follower force, and viscous damping, etc. is analysed. The strange attractors in Poincare map have the self-similar fractal geometry. Dynamic buckling loads are computed for various parameters, where the loads are changed drastically for the small change of parameters.
In hydraulic machinery, the hydraulic fluid acts primarily as working fluid and secondarily as a lubricant. Hence, the viscous friction force acting on the sliding components should be reduced to improve the mechanical efficiency. It is now well known that the surface texturing is a useful method for friction reduction. In this study, using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT, the lubrication characteristics of a surface textured slider bearing under high boundary pressure difference is studied. The streamlines, velocity profiles, pressure distributions, load capacity, friction force and leakage flowrate are highly affected by the film thickness ratio and the textured region. Partial texturing at the inlet region of the inclined slider bearing can reduce both friction force and leakage flowrate than in the untextured case. The present results can be used to improve the lubrication characteristics of hydraulic machinery.
This paper presents a systematic design and training procedure for the feed-forward back-propagation neural network (NN) modeling of both forward and inverse behavior of a rotary magnetorheological (MR) damper based on experimental data. For the forward damper model, with damper force as output, an optimization procedure demonstrates accurate training of the NN architecture with only current and velocity as input states. For the inverse damper model, with current as output, the absolute value of velocity and force are used as input states to avoid negative current spikes when tracking a desired damper force. The forward and inverse damper models are trained and validated experimentally, combining a limited number of harmonic displacement records, and constant and half-sinusoidal current records. In general the validation shows accurate results for both forward and inverse damper models, where the observed modeling errors for the inverse model can be related to knocking effects in the measured force due to the bearing plays between hydraulic piston and MR damper rod. Finally, the validated models are used to emulate pure viscous damping. Comparison of numerical and experimental results demonstrates good agreement in the post-yield region of the MR damper, while the main error of the inverse NN occurs in the pre-yield region where the inverse NN overestimates the current to track the desired viscous force.
