Hydrodynamic interaction between two cylinders in planar shear flow of viscoelastic fluid

  • Particle-particle interaction is of great importance in the study of suspension rheology. In this research we have investigated the hydrodynamic interaction between two identical cylinders in viscoelastic fluids numerically as a model problem for the study of viscoelastic suspension. We confine two neutrally buoyant cylinders between two parallel plates and impose a shear flow. We determine the migration velocity of two cylinders. The result shows that cylinders move toward or away from each other depending upon the initial distance between them and that there is an equilibrium distance between two cylinders in viscoelastic fluids regardless of the initial distance. In the case of Newtonian fluid, there is no relative movement as expected. The results partly explain the chaining phenomena of spherical particles in shear flows of viscoelastic fluids.

A phenomenological approach to suspensions with viscoelastic matrices

  • A simple constitutive model for viscoelastic suspensions is discussed in this paper. The model can be used to predict the rheological properties (relative viscosity and all stresses) for viscoelastic suspensions in shear and elongational flow, and the constitutive equations combine a 'viscoelastic' behaviour component and a 'Newtonian' behaviour component. As expected, the model gives a prediction of positive first normal stress difference and negative second normal stress difference; the dimensionless first normal stress difference strongly depends on the shear rate and decreases with the volume fraction of solid phase, but the dimensionless second normal stress difference (in magnitude) is nearly independent of the shear rate and increases with the volume fraction. The relative viscosities and all the stresses have been tested against available experimental measurements.

  • In order to compute the forces which are transmitted through rubber bushings with a commercial multibody dynamic analysis (MBDA) program, a rubber bushing model is needed. The rubber bushing model of MBDA programs such as DADS or ADAMS is the Voigt model which is simply a parallel spring-viscous damper system, meaning that the damping force of the Voigt model is proportional to the frequency. However, experiments do not necessarily support this proportionality. Alternatively, the viscoelastic characteristics of rubber bushings can be better represented by the complex stiffness. The purpose of this paper is to develop a viscoelastic rubber bushing model for the MBDA programs. Firstly, a methodology is proposed to calculate the complex stiffness of rubber bushings considering static and dynamic load conditions. Secondly, a viscoelastic rubber bushing model developed which uses standard elements provided by DADS. The proposed methods are applied to the rubber bushings of the lower control arms of a rear suspension of a 1994 Ford Taurus model. Then, the forces computed for the rubber bushing model are analyzed and compared with the Voigt model in time and frequency domains.

  • An elastomeric bushing is a device used in automotive suspension systems to cushion the force transmitted from the wheel to the frame of the vehicle. A bushing is an elastomeric hollow cylinder which is bonded to a solid metal shaft at its inner surface and a metal sleeve at its outer suface. The relation between the force applied to the shaft or sleeve and their relative deformation is nolinear and exhibits features of viscoelasticity. Numerical solutions of the boundary value problem represent the exact bushing response for use in the method for determining the force relaxation function of the bushing. The new nonlinear viscoelastic bushing model, which is called Pipkin-Rogers model, is proposed and it is shown that the predictions of the proposed force-displacement relation are in very good agreement with the exact results. This new bushing model is thus very suitable for use in multi-body dynamics codes. The success of the present study for axial mode response suggests that the same approach be applied to other modes, such as torsional or radial modes.

Viscoelastic Properties of Fresh Cement Paste to Study the Flow Behavior

  • During concrete pumping, the migration and redistribution of particles occur in a pipe and the lubrication layer that forms between the bulk concrete and the pipe wall is the governing factor determining the flow behavior. In order to identify flow behavior of pumping, in this study, the viscoelastic properties related to the microstructural behavior of a flocculated suspension were examined by using dynamic oscillatory measurements. Cement paste is assumed to be a constituent material of the lubrication layer and ten cases of mixing design are employed by changing the proportions of mineral admixtures. The relationship between the yield stress obtained from the steady shear test and the dynamic modulus resulted from the oscillatory shear measurement was derived and the implications of the correlation are discussed. Moreover, based on the investigation of the viscoelastic properties with oscillatory measurements, the initial behavior of pumped concrete was analyzed systematically.

Effect of Protein and Degree of Oxidation on Viscoelastic Behavior of Corn Starch Gel (산화정도와 단백질 첨가에 따른 산화 옥수수 전분 겔의 유동특성)

  • Viscoelastic behavior of oxidized starch gel, modified with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and the adding effects of protein in oxidized starch gel was studied by dynamic viscoelastic measurement. The storage modulus(G′) of starch gel increased with the increase of starch concentration. They showed higher value when starch suspension was treated to 95$^{\circ}C$ rather than 85$^{\circ}C$. Consistency of starch gel was decreased over 1.0% active Cl/g starch when heated to 95$^{\circ}C$, which means that the swelling of starch granules increased with concentration of NaOCl and showed more sensitive against shear. As the extent of oxidation increased, starch granules were easily destroyed. Therefore, it is hard to separate between compartment of leached-out amylose and that of amylopectin, which means that the ability of gel formation was reduced. When oxidized starches were gelatinized in presence of soy protein and sodium caseinate, it was found that G′ decreased, and frequency dependence of G′ and G" increased with the increased degree of oxidation in starch. The reduce of starch-protein interaction was thought to be through the dissociation of the branched amylopectin, which playa leading role in protein interaction, with the oxidation of starch.

Therefore, by modifying the constitutive equation fur a nonlinear viscoelastic incompressible material developed by Lianis, the data fur the elastomeric bushing material was obtained and this data was used to derive the new load-displacement relation for radial response of the bushing. After the load relaxation function for the bushing is obtained from the step displacement control test, Pipkin-Rogers model was developed, Solutions were allowed fur comparison between the results of Modified Lianis model and those of the proposed model. It is shown that the proposed Pipkin-Rogers model is in very good agreement with Modified Lianis model.
