Failures in ATM networks can occur at virtual path (VP) links, virtual path switches, and virtual channel (VC) switches. Restoration schemes have been proposed for VP link and VP switch failures, however, none for VC switch failures. In general, VC switches are used for edge nodes in protection domains. Since even only one VC switch failure can cause a critical problem, new restoration schemes for VC switch failures are highly required. Restoration schemes at the VP level proposed so far can be categorized into those using the flooding algorithm and those using the backup virtual path (BVP) concept. Even though the latter cannot handle unpredictable failures, it has some advantages such as fast restoration and low spare capacity requirement. In this paper, we propose new restoration schemes using a new type of BVPs to handle VC switch failures. The simulation results show that the proposed schemes can restore virtual connection failures due to VC switch failures without degrading restorability for VP failures.
Abstract A cost evaluation of protection scheme for VP-based ATM network is presented here and its related characteristics are evaluated. The proposed and evaluated scheme is a state-independent restoration scheme using a disjoint path group. For fast and simple restoration of failed connections, link disjoint or node disjoint VP groups (DVPG) were utilized in this paper. A VP assignment and capacity planning problem is formulated. When failure occurs, the failed working VPs are switched to the protection VPs of disjoint path groups with a simple restoration scheme. And, cost evaluation and restoration characteristics are presented. The consideration of multiple QoS (Quality of Service) levels and disjoint path group protection scheme require additional network cost but acquire fit and fast restoration.
Genetic Algorithm is well known as the efficient algorithm which can solve a difficult optimization problem. Recently, there has been increasing interest in applying genetic algorithm to problem related to network design. In this paper, we propose a two-step genetic algorithm for designing a optimum virtual path network(VPN) for a given physical network and traffic demand. The first step is a routing step in which a route is found between every node pair in the network. In the second step, paths are assigned as VPs so as to minimize the total number of VPs configured, the number of VPs carried by a link, and the VP hopcount. We study the performance of the propose algorithm through simulation. The result shows that the VPN generated by the proposed algorithm is good in minimizing the number of VPs configured, the load on a link, and the VP hopcount.

In order to sufficiently utilize the potential effectiveness of ATM networks, systematic and effective network management and control systems must be employed. In addition to network design, planning, and call routing techniques used in traditional circuit-switched networks. ATM networks can provide logical VP(Virtual Path) reconfiguration capabilities which can adapt to changes in the network environment. With a proper application of the VP reconfiguration technique, ATM networks can reduce the overhead of frequent network redesign and the overhead of call routing processing. However, ATM VP reconfiguration is a very complex and difficult problem which consists of many facets of optimization subproblems such as VP routing. VP sizing, VP terminating point location and VC routing. Most previous research on the ATM logical network reconfiguration problem dealt with the subset of the problem. This paper mathematically formulates the ATM network reconfiguration problem completely considering all subproblems. Since it is very difficult to derive the optimal solution of the formulated problem, we develop a heuristic method based on a Max min bandwidth allocation principle. We show the feasibility of the proposed heuristic method with a simple example.
In the forthcoming public ATM/B-ISDN, the efficient resource management with pre-planned transit networking which public domain NNI signaling is essential to maintain high network utilization and to assure QoS to the multimedia service users. For this purpose the transit networks must be managed according to the bearer service capability which is defined by ATM Forum and ITU-T. In this paper, we introduce an implementation of ATM transit networking with ATM VP-XC(Virtual Path cross-connect) and US(Network Management System). The functions of ATM VP-XC and NMS have been simulated with OPNET 6.1 modules. We implemented the F4 OAM functions of ATM VP connection according to the ITU-T 1.610 recommendation. Also, the ATM VP transit networking is managed by the NMS according to the connection management architecture of the TWN(Telecommunications Management Network) /TINA ( Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture).
In this paper, we propose a new heuristic design algorithm for the virtual path (VP)-based ATM network with multiple traffic classes, in which QoS constraints associated with traffic class are taken into account. The minimum bandwidth of VP required to carry given amount of traffic is obtained by utilizing an equivalent bandwidth concept, and the route of each VP is placed so that the network cost is minimized while the QoS requirement is fulfilled To evaluate our design algorithm, we consider two kinds of traffic: voice traffic as low speed service and still picture traffic as high speed service. Through numerical examples, we demonstrate that our design method can achieve an efficient use of network resources, which results in providing a cost-effective VP-based ATM network.

In ATM networks with high capacity, the effect of failures on transmission links or nodes can be catastrophic, so that the issue of survivability is of great importance. In this paper. we consider the routing problem for working and backup virtual paths(VPs). To accomplish a higher survivability. routing the two kinds of VPs should be taken into account at the same time because backup VP routing depends on the working VP routing. A coevolutionary algorithm is employed to solve the problem for simultaneously routing of working and backup VPs. To develop an efficient coevolutionary algorithm for the problem. structure of populations, encoding method, neighborhood, and genetic operators are studied in this paper. The results of extensive experiments are reported. The performance comparison of the proposed algorithm with a conventional genetic algorithm and existing heuristics shows that our approach is promising.
This paper considers a problem of configuring both physical backbone and logical virtual path (VP) networks in a reconfigurable asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network where links are subject to failures. The objective is to determine jointly the VP assignment, the capacity assignment of physical links and the bandwidth allocation of VPs, and the routing assignment of traffic demand at least cost. The network cost includes backbone link capacity expansion cost and penalty cost for not satisfying the maximum throughput of the traffic due to link failures or insufficient link capacities. The problem is formulated as a zero-one non-linear mixed integer programming problem, for which an effective solution procedure is developed by using a Lagrangean relaxation technique for finding a lower bound and a heuristic method exploited for improving the upper bound of any intermediate solution. The solution procedure is tested for its effectiveness with various numerical examples.

The Type of Service based multicast routing algorithm is necessary to support efficiently herogeneous applications in ATM network. In this paper I propose the Constrained Multicast Tree with Virtual Destination(DMTVD) heuristic algorithm as least cost multicast routing algorithm. The service is categorized into two types, as delay sensitive and non in CMTVD algorithm. For the delay sensitive service type, the cost optimized route is the Minimum Cost Stenier Tree connecting all the destination node group, virtual destination node group and source node with least costs, subject to the delay along the path being less than the maximum allowable end to end delay. The other side for the non-delay sensitive service, the cost optimized route is the MCST connecting all the multicast groups with least costs, subject to the traffic load is balanced in the network. The CMTVD algorithm is based on the Constrained Multicasting Tree algorithm but regards the nodes branching multiple destination nodes as virtural destination node. The experimental results show that the total route costs is enhanced 10%-15% than the CTM algorithm.
