To match the requirements of heterogeneous mobile devices, video objects may be transcoded, which requires considerable CPU resources. Alternatively, multiple versions of the same video may be stored on servers, but this requires a lot of disk space. We formulate the trade-off between the versions that are stored on disk and the need for transcoding. We propose an optimal solution to this formulation based on dynamic programming. Experiments show that our scheme allows up to 68% more clients to be admitted than conventional schemes when a reasonable amount of storage is available.

During the last decade, Internet protocol television(IPTV), broadcasting of multimedia services using well understood Internet technologies, is a fast spreading technology for distributing multimedia content to consumers. As IPTV services advance, an increasing user demand and tremendous content volume of multimedia content cause some difficulties in network resource management. In this paper, we propose an improved load balancing algorithm for video-on-demand(VoD) service. Unlike existing algorithms, the proposed algorithm considers user's behaviors for VoD service, and determines the most efficient allocation of VoD requests by estimating expected server load and expected user waiting time.

This paper implements MOD system using multicast delivery. Conventional system provide server-based system in multicast delivery but implemented system provides on-demand client-based multicast system. The scheduler aggregates clients' request and it generate multcast group addresses and port numbers according to requested video items and service request time. Then it transmits immediately multicast address to MOD server and client who request service. And then MOD server transmits requested streams with a multicast group address and the client joins the group automatically. The scheduler assigns the same multicast group address when other clients request an identical video within the same scheduling duration. The system can reduce load of server and support many clients at the same time.

최근 정보 기술의 비약적인 발전으로 영상서비스에 일대 혁신이 일어나고 있으며, 급기야는 방송과 통신이 융합된 멀티미디어 서비스의 보급이 실체화되고, 그 일례로 일반 가입자에게 전화, TV 컴퓨터가 결합한 가정용 미래형 TV 모델을 보급시키기에 이르렀다. 이것은 디지털을 기본으로 한 TV위의 장치로 혹은 원거리 중앙에의 컴퓨터 처리에 의해 영화나 게임 등의 각종 비디오 정보를 수신할 수 있는 것으로 발전된 것이다. 그 결과 양방향 대화형 미디어가 등장하게 되었으며, 지금 세계 각국에서 추진하고 있는 ''정보 고속도로''와 함께 양방향 대화형 미디어 서비스 중에서 가장 먼저 구체화되고 있는 서비스가 바로 주문자 요구형 비디오, 즉 Video On Demand(VOD) 서비스이다. 본 논문에서는 먼저 VOD 서비스 시스팀의 개요 및 국내외 동향 등을 알아보았으며, 또한 VOD 시스팀 구성과 그에 따른 VOD시스팀의 구성 요소들에 대한 설계 및 동작들에 대하여 설명하였다.

Passive optical networks (PONs) are the emerging solution for access networks since PONs provide high bandwidth. TDM ((time-division multiplexing) PON cannot support sufficient bandwidth for new broadband services such as UHD (ultra high-definition) IP TV, and VOD (video on demand). The solution is TWDM PON which is a mixture of WDM (wavelength-division multiplexing) and TDM. This paper proposes a new MAC (media access control) protocol for TWDM PON.

오늘날 네트웍의 발달로 인하여 사용자가 원하는 영상매체를 실시간으로 요구하는 멀티미디어 서비스에 대한 사용자의 요구가 날로 증가하고 있다. 때문에 영상매체를 제공하는 서버는 여러 사용자들이 동시에 접속하였을 때 서비스를 제공 할 수 있는 능력을 가져야 한다. 본 논문에서는 멀티미디어 서비스를 위한 VOD(Video-On-Demand)시스템을 설계 및 구현한다. VOD 시스템은 미디어를 분석하여 BES(Back-End-Server)에 저장하는 영화 관리자(Movie Manager), 분산 저장된 데이터를 읽어 들여 사용자나 연결된 FES(Front-End Server)로 보내는 BES, 사용자에게 미디어 데이트를 전송하는 FES와 전송된 데이트를 받아서 재생하는 클라이언트(Client)를 구성된다. 또한 다수의 서버를 연결하기 위하여 SCI(Scalabel Coherent Interface)를 이용한 효율적인 메시지 전송방법을 구현한다.

Downlink beamforming is very important in recent mobile communications which requires wireless internet, VOD(Video-On-Demand), multimedia services. This paper addresses and analyzes the essential considerations fur downlink beamforming of smart antenna system to provide wanted characteristics. Major considerations in this paper are HPA power allocation for downlink beamforming, received power at mobile terminal, concept and performance of auxiliary pilot channel, importance and moth of array calibration, and throughput comparison of downlink and uplink. All above mentioned items are investigated in this paper.

The Digital Audio-Visual Council(DAVIC) that was established to develop useful multimedia communication services has completed the specifications for providing on-demand services such as Movie on Demand(MoD), Teleshopping and accepting Internet service. And then they are proceeding the works to suport converstional communcation services like Plain Old Telecphone Service(POTS), Video telephone, Video teleconferencing. In this paper, we prpose an efficient terminal architecture which can provide conversational multimedia communication services on DAVIC Set-Top Box (STB) environments. To apply the implemented conversational terminal to the multipoint communication environment, we considered the factors of Qurlity of Services(QoS) that determine grade of conversational communication service. We also present the inter-working scheme and that system structure to satisfy QoS by using new MPEG video bridge which gurantees end to end delay requirements as major element of QoS for achieving the real time communication and does not accompany visual quality degradation.

This paper proposes multicast routing algorithm that operates for non-interactive multimedia applications such as VOD(Video On Demand) and real-time data broadcasting. It is possible that there exist multiple senders in non-interactive multimedia applications. This paper designs multicast routing algorithm in this environment. The simulation of algorithm proposed in this paper shows much better performancetcost, delay) than that of only one source. To guarantee the performance of algorithm, Broadband ATM network is modelled in simulation.

The increase of video data makes the demand of efficient retrieval, storing, and browsing technologies necessary. In this paper, a video segmentation method (scene change detection method, or shot boundary detection method) for the development of such systems is proposed. For abrupt cut detection, inter-frame similarities are computed using luminance and edge histograms and a cut is declared when the similarities are under th predetermined threshold values. A gradual scene change detection is based on the similarities between the current frame and the previous shot boundary frame. A correlation method is used to obtain universal threshold values, which are applied to various video data. Experimental results show that propose method provides 90% precision and 98% recall rates for abrupt cut, and 59% precision and 79% recall rates for gradual change.
