Smart sensor is known as intelligent sensor, it is different with other conventional sensors in the case of intelligent system embedded on it. Smart sensor has many benefits e.g. low-cost in usage, self-decision and self-diagnosis abilities. This sensor consists of perception element(sensing element), signal processing and technology of communication. In this work, a bridge and structure of smart sensor has been investigated to be capable to condition monitoring routine. This investigation involves low power consumption, software programming, fast data acquisition ability, and authoritativeness warranty. Moreover, this work also develops smart sensor to be capable to perform high sampling rate, high resolution of ADC, high memory capacity, and good communication for data transfer. The result shows that the developed smart sensor is promising to be applied to various industrial fields.

Fiber-guided sensor system using a generator and a receiver can detect the amplitude of load or pressure. However, this type of sensor can show some difficulties in detecting the location of damages and pressure loadings. To overcome this weakness of this type, the ultrasonic active fiber sensor, which has an integrated ultrasonic generator and sensing part, was developed in this study. By using this sensor system, the location of mechanical loads can be exactly detected. Moreover, the ultrasonic active fiber sensor is more cost-effective than an ultrasonic fiber sensor using two piezoelectric transducers which are used as a generator and a receiver, respectively. Two applications of the ultrasonic active fiber sensor are demonstrated: cure monitoring of lead and measurement of liquid level. Present results showed that the active fiber sensor can be applied for various environmental sensing.

Vibration control of a plate using an optical fiber sensor and a piezoelectric actuator is considered in the present study, An aluminum plate with attached Extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometer (EFPI) and piezoelectric actuator is prepared for experimental investigation. Vibration level of EFPI that can represent the mechanical strain without severe distortion Is validated by forced nitration experiment. A linear time invariant system model is constructed based on the experimentally obtained frequency responses, and an optimal controller is designed for the multi-modal vibration suppression. Control performance is presented in frequency and time domains. It is found that the nitration level of the first three modes can be greatly reduced. The effect of low-pass filtering used to eliminate high frequency noise on the stability and control performance is also considered.
The quality of vibration pattern reproduction of elastic structures by the modal expansion method is influenced by the modal expansion method and the sensor placement as well as the accuracy of measured natural modes and the total number of vibration sensors. In this context, this paper presents an improved numerical method for reproducing the vibration patterns by introducing a block-wise modal expansion method (BMEM), together with the genetic algorithm (GA). For a given number of vibration sensors, the sensor positions are determined by an evolutionary optimization using GA and the modal assurance criterion (MAC). Meanwhile, for the proposed block-wise modal expansion, a whole frequency range of interest is divided into several overlapped frequency blocks and the vibration field reproduction is made block by block with different natural modes and different modal participation factors. A hollow cylindrical tank is taken to illustrate the proposed improved modal expansion method. Through the numerical experiments, the proposed method is compared with several conventional methods to justify that the proposed method provides the improved results.

Wireless sensors are more favorable in measuring structural response compared to conventional sensors. This is because they are easier to use with no issues with cables and are considerably cheaper. There are several applications that can be used in recording and analyzing data from MEMS sensor installed on an iPhone. The Vibration App is one of the applications used and there has not been adequate research conducted in analyzing the performance of this App. This paper analyzed the performance of the Vibration App by comparing it with the performance of an ICP sensor. Results show that natural frequency results are more accurate (error less than 5%) in comparison to the amplitude results. This means that built- in MEMS sensor in smartphones are good at estimating natural frequency of structures. In addition, it was seen that the results became more accurate at higher frequencies (5.0Hz and 10.0Hz).
This paper presents a method to reduce the vibration-induced noise effect of an inertial measurement device mounted on a self-driving vehicle. The inertial sensor used in the GNSS/INS integrated navigation system of a self-driving vehicle is fixed directly on the chassis of vehicle body so that its navigation output is affected by the vibration of the vehicle's engine, resulting in the degradation of the navigational performance. Therefore, these effects must be considered when mounting the inertial sensor. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes to use an in-house manufactured vibration suppression device and analyzes its impact on reducing the vibration effect. Experimental test results in a static scenario show that the vibration-induced noise effect is more clearly observed in the lateral direction of the vehicle, but can be effectively suppressed by using the proposed vibration suppression device compared to the case without it. In addition, the dynamic positioning test scenario shows the position, speed, and posture errors are reduced to 74%, 67%, and 14% levels, respectively.
In this study, a compact wireless vibration measurement system was developed using a 3-axial accelerometer in order to evaluate the vibration stimulation system. A low power microprocessor chip integrated with 2.4 GHz RF transceiver was used for the wireless data communication. To evaluate the system, the frequencies and accelerations from the vibration stimulation system were measured using an LVDT sensor and a vibration measurement system. The average frequency difference by the measurement system was less than 0.1 Hz, and the standard deviation of frequencies estimated by the LVDT sensor and the accelerometer was below 0.08 Hz. The developed system was applied to access a vibration stimulation system for the future study. The average acceleration difference of the central and peripheral point of the stimulation system was less than 0.0005 g(1 g=9.8 $m/s^2$), and the standard deviation of the acceleration was below 0.004 g, which shows the usefulness of the wireless vibration measurement system.

Ultrasonic fiber sensor is more cost-effective than optical fiber sensor using light. However, optical fiber lines are separately used for sensing. Thus, if it is applied for huge system, it is need many lines of the sensor systems. To overcome this point, novel ultrasonic sensor systems considering wave cancellation and modulation were newly developed. By using this schema, reference-free sensor system can be developed. By using ultrasonic waves of different excitation frequencies, multiple input-signal output sensor system was also developed by applying spectrum analyses. Using the array type sensor system, the leakage of liquid and its evaporation can be monitored successfully.

This paper deals with sensing ability of smart sensor that has a sensing ability to distinguish materials according to surface types of smart sensor. We have developed a new signal processing method that can distinguish among different materials. The smart sensor was developed for recognition of materials. We made two types of smart sensors in our experiment. Then, we estimated the ability to recognize objects according to smart sensor type. We estimated the sensing ability of smart sensor with the $R_{SAI}$ method. Experiments and analysis were executed to estimate the ability to recognize objects according to surface types of smart sensor. Sensing ability of smart sensors was evaluated relatively through a new $R_{SAI}$ method. Applications of smart sensors are for finding abnormal conditions of objects (auto-manufacturing), feeling of objects (medical product), robotics, safety diagnosis of structure, etc.etc.
This paper presents a systematic investigation of the effect of sensor location on the data quality and subsequently, on the effectiveness of machine health monitoring. Based on an analysis of the signal propagation process from the defect location to the sensor, numerical simulations using finite element modeling were conducted on a bearing test bed to determine the signal strength at several representative sensor locations. The results showed that placing sensors closely to the machine component being monitored is critical to achieving high signal-to-noise ratio, thus improving the data quality. Using millimeter-sized piezoceramic plates, the obtained results were evaluated experimentally. A comparison with a set of commercial vibration sensors verified the developed structural dynamics-based sensor placement strategy. It further demonstrated that the proposed shock wave-based sensing technique provided an effective alternative to vibration measurement, while requiring less space for sensor installation.
