The effects of an anti-rolling tank (ART) on vessel motions were numerically investigated. The potential-based BEM vessel motion simulation program and particle-based computational fluid dynamics program were dynamically coupled and used to perform a simulation of vessel motions with ART. From the time domain simulation results, the response amplitude operators for sway and roll motions were obtained and compared with the corresponding experimental and numerical results. Because the main purpose of ART was only to reduce roll motions, it was important to show that the natural properties of a floating vessel were not changed by the effects of ART. Various ART filling ratios and several ART positions were considered. In conclusion, ART only reduced the roll motion regardless of its filling ratio and position.

The effects of inner liquid sloshing on vessel motions are a well-known factor. It was investigated experimentally and numerically. In this regard, the study of many efforts to reduce natural phenomena of vessel motions by adopting special devices especially for roll motions. Among many devices, inserting baffles in the inner liquid tank is very common. In this study, one investigated the vessel motions with inner sloshing tanks with baffles inside. For the numerical simulation, one employed a dynamically coupled program between boundary-element-method-based vessel motion analysis program and a particle-based computational fluid dynamics program. Comparing corresponding experimental results validated the dynamically coupled program. The validated coupled program was used to simulate vessel motions, including sloshing effects with various lengths of inner baffles. The simulation results show that not only the filling ratio of inner liquid, but also the length of clearance due to baffles influenced the vessel motions. The significant point of this study was that the natural frequency of vessel motions can be maintained irrespective of the amount of filling ratio through adjustment of the clearance. In a future study, the effects of various numbers of baffles with various clearances would be conducted to percuss the possibility of vessel motion control with inner liquid sloshing effects.
A dynamically positioned vessel must be capable of maintaining a specified position and direction by controlling the thruster devices. The motions of a vessel are often assuned to tne sum of low frequency(LF)motions and high frequency(HF)motions. The former is mainly due to wind, current and second order wave forces, while the latter is mainly due to first order wave forces. In order to avoid the high frequency thruser modulation, the control system must include filters to estimate the low frequency motions from the measured motion signals, This paper presents a control system based on Kalman filtering technique and optimal control tyeory. Using the combined kalmam filter, LF motion estimates and HF ones are achieved from the motion measurement of the vessel. The estimated low frequency motions are used as inputs to the dynamic positioning system. The thruster modulation is minimized using the optimal control theory; Linear Quadratic Gaussian(LQG)controller. The performances of the Kalman filter and the dynamic positioned vessel are investigated by computer simulation.

Dynamic response analysis is carried out for slender marine structures such as tensioned risers and tethers of tension leg platform, which are subjected to floating vessel motions as well as environmental forces arising from ocean waves. A mumerical analysis procedure is developed by using finite element model of the structural member. Dynamic analses are performed in the time domain for regular waves. Parameter studies are carried out to highlight the effects of surface vessel motions on the lateral dynamics of the structures. Example results of displacements, bending stresses are compared for various in water depth, environmental condition and vessel motion. Some instability conditions of the structures due to time-varying tension by vessel heave motion are discussed through the example analyses. As the results, the interaction between vessel surge and heave motions amplifies the total structural response of a riser. In the case of a tether, the effect of vessel heave motion during heavy storm is seemed to be quite significant to lateral response of the structure.
The object of this study is to develop the method of safe conducting of a vessel through stormy sea when we encounter typoon or hurricane on ocean. The scope of investigation in this paper will be limited to safe maneuvering related only with rolling motions of a vessel. The processes of investigations are as follows; Firstly, we decide a CPA(Closest Point of Approach) with the center of the storm and decide significant wave height($H_{1/3}$) by SMB method and then calculate wave height of the highest of 1000 waves($H_{1/1000}$) and other data. Secondly, we make mathematical model of rolling motions of the vessel on the stormy sea and calculate the biggest rolling angle of the vessel and etc. Thirdly, we decide the most safe maneuvering method to ride out the stormy sea. By the above mentioned method we are able to calculate the status of the stormy sea and ships motions to be encountered and ride out safely through violently rough sea.

In this paper, we propose a detection method of the leukocyte motions in a microvessel by using spatiotemporal image analysis. The leukocyte motions that adhere to blood vessel walls can be visualized to move along the blood vessel wall's contours in a sequence of images. In this proposal method, we use the constraint that the leukocytes move along the blood vessel wall's contours and detect the leukocyte motions by using the spatiotemporal image analysis method. The generated spatiotemporal image is processed by a special-purpose orientation-selective filter and then subsequent grouping processes are done. The subsequent grouping processes select and group the leukocyte trace segments among all the segments obtained by simple thresholding and skeletonizing operations. Experimental results show that the proposed method can stably detect the leukocyte motions even when multiple leukocyte traces intersect each other.
Characteristics of the pulsatile flow in a 3-dimensional elastic blood vessel are investigated to understand the blood flow phenomena in the human body arteries. In this study, a model for the elastic blood vessel is proposed. The finite volume prediction is used to analyse the pulsatile flow in the elastic blood vessel. Variations of the pressure, velocity and wall shear stress of the pulsatile flow in the elastic blood vessel are obtained. The magnitudes of the velocity waveforms in the elastic blood vessel model are larger than those in the rigid blood vessel model. The wall shear stresses on the elastic vessel vary with the blood vessel motions. Amplitude indices of the wall shear stress for blood in the elastic blood vessel are $4\sim5$ times larger than those of the Newtonian fluid. As the phase angle increased, point of the phase angle is are moved forward and the wall shear stresses are increased for blood and the Newtonian fluid.
This study examines the behaviors and properties of discharged liquid CO2 from a long elastic pipe moving with a vessel for the oceanic CO2 sequestration by considering pipe dynamics and vessel motions. The coupled vessel-pipe dynamic analysis for a typical configuration is done in the frequency and time domain using the ORCAFLEX program. The system's characteristics, such as vessel RAOs and pipe-axial-velocity transfer function, are identified by applying a broadband white noise wave spectrum to the vessel-pipe dynamic system. The frequency shift of the vessel's RAO due to the encounter-frequency effect is also investigated through the system identification method. Additionally, the time histories of the tip-of-pipe velocities, along with the corresponding discharged droplet size and Weber numbers, are generated for two different sea states. The comparison between the stiff non-oscillating pipe with the flexible oscillating pipe shows the effect of the vessel and pipe dynamics to the discharged CO2 droplet size and Weber number. The pipe's axial-mode resonance is the leading cause of the fluctuation of the discharged CO2 properties. The significant variation of the discharged CO2 properties observed in this study shows the importance of considering the vessel-pipe motions when designing oceanic CO2 sequestration strategy, including suitable sequestration locations, discharge rate, towing speed, and sea states.
Since sloshing effects influences ship motions including floater's natural frequencies. The significant factors changing ship motions are inner liquid impact loads and inertia forces and moments with respect to its filling ratio. This means that changing sloshing loads with sloshing effects reduction device (SERD) may control ship motions. In this regard, conceptual model for adjustable SERD was suggested by authors and then implanted into fully coupled program between vessel motion and sloshing. By changing clearances of baffles in the inner tank which were component of SERD, then the roll RAOs from each case were obtained. It is revealed that using well-controlled SERD can maintain natural frequencies of floater even inner tank has different filling ratio.

The safe passing maneuver of a large vessel along the designed course through a narrow channel in the flow of strong current is greatly related with her maneuvering characteristics. This paper treats maneuvering characteristic of a large vessel changing her course with the use of her control surface in a narrow channel with strong current. In this paper, the author proposed mathematical models of calculating maneuvering motions of the very large LNG tanker altering course using her control surface and calculated passing tracks of the vessel through the channel and compared the calculated results with those of maneuvering simulations by a desk-top simulator. In general the motions with the calculated values and the simulated motions are well coincided with each other.
