  • The developmental changes occuring in the secondary xylem of Aristolochia manshuriensis Komarov have been studied in different ages of vine stems. A. manshuriensis possesses typical storeyed cambium comprising both vertically elongated fusiform initials and almost isodiametric ray cell initials. Stems of A. manshuriensis have wide rays that make the secondary xylem appear dissected as other vine types. The length of vessel member and fiber remained relatively constant throughout the secondary growth. However, vessel diameter increases with the increasing age of stem till the cell reaches their maximum limit and later more or less stabilize in diameter while number of vessel per $\textrm{mm}^2$ is vice versa. Width and relative proportion of ray to axial elements gradually increased with the increasing age of stem and later remained relatively constant.

  • In this study, relationship between seed origin and growth rate of Alnus glutinosa from different seed collection (Yugoslovia, ltaly, United Kingdom, Bulgaria) was investigated with focused on anatomical properties as wood fiber length, vessel element length and diameter. Alnus glutinosa showed diffuse-porous wood with scalariform perforation in alternate pitting. Ray height was 9~11 in tangential section and ray number were 16~26 in cross section. There were no differences on latewood focused on wood fiber length, length and diameter of vessel element, but difference on earlywood. Other than Yugoslavian seed, there was better growth rate with shorter wood fiber and vessel element length on latewood. However, seed from Yugoslovain showed better growth rate with longer wood fiber and vessel element length than other 3 seed orgins.

  • The objective of the present study is to investigate the characteristics for flow and wall shear stress in the aneurysm which is a local dilatation of the blood vessel. The numerical simulation using the commercial software for the laminar and steady flow were carried out over the diameter ratios(ratio of maximum diameter of aneurysm to the diameter of blood vessel) ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 and Reynolds number ranging from 900 to 1800. It was shown that a recirculating vortex occupied the entire bulge with its core located closer to the distal end of the bulge and the strength of vortex increased with increase of the Reynolds number and diameter ratio. Especially, for the Reynolds number of 1800 and diameter ratio of 2.5, the very weak secondary recirculating flow was produced at the left upper of the aneurysm. The position of a maximum wall shear stress was the distal end of the aneurysm(z=18mm) regardless of the Reynolds number and diameter ratios. But the maximum values of the wall shear stress increased in proportion to the increase of Reynolds number and diameter ratio.

  • This paper presents vessel contour for extracting features and segmentating narrow blood vessels down to a diameter of two pixels in digital subtraction angiographic image. We present a new tracking algorithm for contour, mainly blood vessels in DSA image, and extracting properties such as their intensities, diameters, and center lines by exploiting spatial continuity. The proposed algorithm comes to detect blood vessel's boundary using difference edge detector one of homogeneity operator and find a next centerline position by direction vector of edge information. This algorithm enhanced variation of vessel's diameter compared to Sun's tracking algorithm and lessoned to compute as direction vector decide adaptively entire vessel's direction field. The processed images are intended to support radiologists in diagnosis, radiation therapy planning, and surgical planning. The algorithm should be useful for automating angiographic analyses of blood vessels.

  • This paper presents a laboratory experiment on data acquisition technique that applied to the gamma radiation scanning coupled with computed tomography (CT) technique for inspection of broken nozzle inside the vertical vessel. The acquisition technique was developed to inspect a large diameter vessel when suspicious problem location is not easily accessed. This technique allows the installation of gamma radiation source (Cesium 137, Cs-137), and detectors (Sodium Iodine. NaI(Tl)) from the accessible location to the required location and performs the scanning by designed pattern. To demonstrate the designed technique, top opened tank which installed with six cut steel pipes diameter of 76.2 mm (3") at a certain position was selected. They were assumed to be a gas riser pipes inside the vessel. Three studied cases were performed, (a) projection of well installed six pipes, (b) projection of one out of six broken pipe and (c) one of nozzle was assumed to be failure and fell down until one out of six pipes was broken and obstructed by nozzle. Results clearly indicated the capability of developed technique to distinguish between normal situation case and abnormal situation cases.

  • To develop a biomarker predicting tumor treatment efficacy is helpful to reduce time, medical expenditure, and efforts in oncology therapy. In clinics, microvessel density using immunohistochemistry has been proposed as an indicator that correlates with both tumor size and metastasis of cancer. In the preclinical study, we hypothesized that vascular morphometrics using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) could be potential indicators to estimate the treatment efficacy of breast cancer. To verify this hypothesis, a 13762-MAT-B-III rat breast tumor was grown in a dorsal skinfold window chamber which was applied to a nude mouse, and the change in vascular morphology was longitudinally monitored during tumor growth and metronomic cyclophosphamide treatment. Based on the daily OCTA maximum intensity projection map, multiple vessel parameters (vessel skeleton density, vessel diameter index, fractal dimension, and lacunarity) were compared with the tumor size in no tumor, treated tumor, and untreated tumor cases. Although each case has only one animal, we found that the vessel skeleton density (VSD), vessel diameter index and fractal dimension (FD) tended to be positively correlated with tumor size while lacunarity showed a partially negative correlation. Moreover, we observed that the changes in the VSD and FD are prior to the morphological change of the tumor. This feasibility study would be helpful in evaluating the tumor vascular response to treatment in preclinical settings.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the anatomical characteristics, the radial and axial variation of the cell dimension and bulk density for four bamboo species used as the major material of bamboo products in Korea; Phyllostachys(P.bambusoides, P.edulis, P.nigra var.henonis, and Pnigra). The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1) In the outer part of culm, the mophological difference of cell diameter and distribution were not acknowledged. However, gum-like substance was occurred In the epidermis, hypodermis, cortex and metaxylem vessel of P.nigra, while it was occured only in the metaxylem vessel of P.edulis. 2) The protoxylem vessel in the central zone of culm-wall could be in the two types; the first type consisted of 4-5 small cell pieces occurred in P.edulis and P.nigra var. henonis, the second type of 1-2 large cell pieces in P.bambusoides and P.nigra. And transition of cell diameter from the vascular bundle sheath to the ground tissue was gradually enlarged in P.nigra and P.edulis but abruptly in P.bambusoides and P.nigra var. henonis. 3) Thin-wall tyloses were well developed in the outer and central zone of culm-wall in four species. 4) Compared with the central part of culm-wall, the number of parenchyma cells and the amount of the vascular bundle sheaths per unit area were a few in the inner part. The inner part nearest to the pith cavity was consisted of thick-well parenchyma cell. 5) The dimensional variations of metaxylem vessel and parenchyma cell in the radial direction were decreased from the inner part to the epidermis in all species observed. 6) The fiber length was the maximum in the central zone and its diameter was increased from the inner part to the outer part. In the axial variation. fiber length was slightly increased from the base and then decresed slowly toward the top, and its diameter was reverse. 7) The axial variation of the bulk density was continuously increased from the base toward the top and its radial variation was rapidly increased from the inner part to the epidermis.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the relationship between anatomical characteristics and growth rate of Quercus rubra from different origins of seed. Anatomical characteristics showed that all Quercus rubra species were ring-porous woods with 1~3 layers of large pores in earlywood, but the latewood had small pores oriented in radial direction. There were slight differences in libriform fiber length and vessel element diameter in the earlywood among different provenance origins of seeds. In growth rate, the libriform fiber length and vessel element diameter was negative correlation in the earlywood, but not correlative in the latewood, and vessel element length was not correlative in the early and latewood, Volumetric composition of libriform fiber and ray in latewood was higher than those in ear lywood, and a higher composition of vessel element was observed in earlywood. Ray height was the range of from 11 to 15 cells.

  • This study was carried out to manufacture wooden vessels by small diameter wood and wasted wood of Castanea crenata Sieb. et Zucc, which has been largely planted in southern area. We made spice set, tea box set, cookie vessel set, bowl set and accessory set. With the development of edged tools, the human species has been able to fashion wood to change and enhance its environment - one only has to look at the history of all cultures to see examples of wooden artifacts and structures. Even with the development of synthetic materials and the progress of automated, mechanized production of wood and wood products, the raw material is still processed by traditional methods to meet a never-ending demand for products made from this most desirable natural material. Chestnut wood has high added value and natural color grain and is very useful for wooden vessel. Thinned low grade trees can be used to produce wooden vessel. Therefore this result can promote thinning and produce good forestation.

  • Grasp of characteristics within liquid-liquid agitated vessel are very important to environment and chemical industry. Mass transfer volumetric coefficient and the Sauter mean diameter of near the droplet were measured by varying the impeller position and liquid height using the alkaline hydrolysis reaction of esters. As a result, following their good correlation was obtained. $$d_{32}=0.270\(\frac{{\sigma}^{0.6}}{{\rho}^{0.2}P^{0.4}_{Vi}}\)k_La=0.49\(\frac{6{\phi}D_A}{d^2_{32}}\)\(\frac{P_Vd^4_{32}}{{\rho}v^3}\)^{0.193}Sc^{1/3}$$.
